Made in Abyss Studio Reveals New Original Mermaid Anime Goodbye, Lara - Main Image
Kinema Citrus is known for its various anime adaptations, but now, the studio is working on an intriguing new original project. The studio recently revealed Goodbye, Lara, an upcoming original anime inspired by the iconic Hans Christian Andersen tale, The Little Mermaid.
That’s not to say it’s a straight-up adaptation of the classic story. Instead, it features a decidedly anime spin on the tale, as it features the mermaid Lara who finds herself in modern Japan.
Goodbye, Lara Promises to Be a Modern Retelling of The Little Mermaid — with a Twist
To mark the anime’s announcement, Kinema Citrus shared a special concept trailer for Goodbye, Lara, an anime that’s being produced for the studio’s 15th anniversary.

Although “Xo, Kitty” doesn’t include cameos from Lana Condor’s Lara Jean or Janel Parrish’s Margot as Kitty’s (Anna Cathcart) older sisters, the show still explores sibling relationships.

Her sisterly instincts kick in when she finds a hospital bracelet from a birth center with her mother’s name on it. She tracks down the baby’s records and, upon learning it was adopted by Australians, immediately assumes it’s Alex.

The cost-of-living crisis is wreaking havoc and the global TV industry is not immune.
As hundreds of buyers and sellers descend upon the UK for the annual London TV Screenings, distributors are looking closely at how they can adapt their catalogs and work in tandem with clients in the face of the incoming recession.
However, the task is not an easy one. Numerous distributors tell Deadline they have had contingencies in place for a long time to deal with such a macro fiscal event – contingencies that came to the fore during Covid-19. These are frequently being shaped by the world around them, not just by recession, they say.
“The ongoing strategy we have and the way we approach the market is constantly evolving,” says Ruth Berry, ITV Studios’ Managing Director of Global Distribution, who was recently promoted to lead the outfit’s combined Distribution and Entertainment arms. “Thinking about these...

Hey, remember when we said that there's going to be a new "Tomb Raider" television show? Well, on top of that, Amazon is looking to make a new "Tomb Raider" movie. Trust us, it isn't as confusing as it may sound, as The Hollywood Reporter claims that the show and movie will be connected. It'll also tie in directly with a new, previously-announced game being developed by Crystal Dynamics, making for a Marvel-esque multimedia franchise.
While Amazon has not commented on either the movie or the show, it's not surprising that they are going all in on "Tomb Raider." The previous multimedia rights owners, MGM, were bought out by the conglomerate in 2022, although they did end up losing the rights to the franchise before then. Now, it sounds like the rights have been regained, albeit in a tenuous way. No names are currently attached to this new movie, as it...

Old Guy: Christoph Waltz to star in a contract killer action-comedy from Con Air director Simon West
Remember to consider people who are older than you are. Some can be dangerous, whether behind the wheel or holding a loaded gun. Such is the case with a new film called Old Guy, starring Christopher Waltz as an aging contract killer. The project, soon heading to the EFM market in Berlin, hails from Con Air and Lara Croft: Tomb Raider director Simon West. Greg Johnson (The Last Son) is writing the script, and it sounds like a doozy.
According to Deadline‘s exclusive report, Old Guy finds Waltz playing Terry Eubanks, a senior contract killer who thinks he’s still the best in the business. Nearing the end of his tenure, Terry is overjoyed to learn The Company is willing to put him back in the field, but with a catch. He’s contracted to train a Gen Z newcomer named Wihlborg, a prodigy assassin with a chip on his shoulder.

Complicating Corbo’s new gig is his former paramour and now Swann’s fiancée, medical visionary Dr. Grace Davila, played by Wonder Woman’s Elena Anaya, who is racing to help stave off a global catastrophe. If you’ve spent any time at all in Stars Hollow, the plot of Netflix’s new series Ginny & Georgia might sound kind of familiar.
The streamer released a series of first-look photos for the hour-long dramedy on Thursday, along with a premiere date: The 10-episode freshman season will debut Wednesday, Feb. 24. Ginny & Georgia stars Antonia Gentry (Raising Dion) as Ginny, an awkward 15-year-old girl who often feels outshined by her vivacious 30-year-old mom Georgia, played by Brianna Howey (Batwoman, The Exorcist). Do you hear that, too, Gilmore Girls fans? Yep, we’re definitely sensing some Lorelai-and-Rory vibes here.

Recently, a friend asked me what Tiny Pretty Things — the new series I’ve been mainlining for reasons we’ll get into in a moment — was all about.
“Ballet, bitches and butts,” I said, with zero shame. (Note to Netflix, which streams the show: Feel free to use that as a blurb!)

This year’s German Film Award nominees for best picture include hard-hitting social dramas, tales of romance and cultural divides, family relationships and musical icons as well as works by a growing number of filmmakers from diverse ethnic backgrounds. The German Film Academy, forced to revamp its 70th German Film Awards ceremony due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, will honor the country’s most acclaimed films during a special live TV presentation on April 24.
The German Film Awards ceremony, which in the past aired pre-recorded on Zdf, will be broadcast live for the first time on Ard’s Das Erste, due in part to its remade and shortened presentation. Doing away with its traditional gala event, the show will instead include guest filmmakers, musicians and presenters taking part via video feed from their homes.

Exclusive: London and La-based production and management firm 42 is on a roll. Latest movie Ironbark, starring Benedict Cumberbatch, was yesterday snapped up by Lionsgate at Sundance in a mid-seven figure deal, while feel-good comedy pic Military Wives was one of the sparkier U.S. acquisitions at Toronto.
Today, we can reveal that Netflix has re-upped its first-look movie deal with the company for another two years. After features including In Darkness and In The Shadow Of The Moon, 42 is now making Anthony Mackie sci-fi Outside The Wire and Adam Randall’s Night Teeth for the streamer. Company co-founder Ben Pugh is currently in pre-production in New Orleans on the latter.

This year’s Toronto International Film Festival will open a Canadian-made documentary. Daniel Roher’s inside look at the history of The Band, “Once Were Brothers: Robbie Robertson and The Band,” will be the first documentary of its kind to open the lauded festival. The film will open the festival with a gala presentation on Thursday, September 5, at Roy Thomson Hall.
Despite not boasting the kind of starry on-screen talent that typically opens the festival, the documentary still comes from a slew of Hollywood heavy-hitters, including executive producers Brian Grazer, Ron Howard, and Martin Scorsese, who previously directed the beloved Band concert doc “The Last Waltz” in 1978.
The film was inspired by Robertson’s 2016 memoir, “Testimony,” and it “tells the moving story of Robertson’s personal journey as he overcame adversity and found camaraderie alongside the four other men who would become his brothers in music, and who together...

In the middle of the Czech spa town of Karlovy Vary stands a massive Brutalist building, the Hotel Thermal, which has housed the Karlovy Vary Int’l Film Festival since the late ’70s.
It is here in the Thermal, on one of Europe’s biggest screens, where I have seen movies that rival those debuting at Cannes six weeks earlier — discoveries such as German director Jan-Ole Gerster’s demanding-mother drama “Lara,” winner of two prizes, and Hong Khaou’s “Monsoon,” a subtle, soulful rumination on the many facets of identity, starring “Crazy Rich Asians” heartthrob Henry Golding as a Vietnamese refugee raised abroad, struggling to reconnect with his mother country.
Karlovy Vary is the first major stop after Cannes where the great French festival’s most essential films (such as Palme d’Or winner “Parasite”) can be seen by non-industry audiences, many of them curious young cinephiles — open-minded twentysomethings from...

Family angst and off-the-wall humor dominated the 54th Karlovy Vary film fest prize race, with Bulgarian-Greek road comedy “The Father” scoring the Crystal Globe Saturday eve in a gala closing ceremony at the Hotel Thermal.
The story of a long-suffering photographer trying to manage his father’s increasingly unhinged behavior in the wake of his wife’s death, the film is the fourth team project by writer-directors Kristina Grozeva and Petar Valchanov.
The jury also honored German psychological family drama “Lara” by Jan-Ole Gerster, which follows a protective mother’s frustrations as her aloof son faces an upcoming piano recital. Lead actress Corinna Harfouch took the actress prize for her tortured turn in the film.
Tim Mielants won the director prize for “Patrick,” his study of hammer obsession by a socially challenged maintenance man for a Belgian nudist camp, while Milan Ondrik won the actor prize for Slovak-Czech family drama “Let There Be Light,...

Of all the ways to begin a movie, few are more cruel than presenting a character such as Lara Jenkins and, before the audience has even gotten the chance to know her, showing her wearily open the window to her depressing German flat, position a chair and prepare to jump. It is Lara’s 60th birthday and, judging from the way it starts, she does not see it as a special occasion. Director Jan-Ole Gerster makes quite the gamble opening “Lara” in such a way, but as the film unfolds, he demonstrates that his intention was never to shock, but to identify with this conflicted character, proceeding to create a portrait of remarkable depth over the span of the day that follows.
A filmmaker once told me that, in his opinion, all movies are mysteries. Audiences go in knowing little or nothing, and they participate as the storyteller slowly reveals...
