Edward Norton is quite vocal about his admiration for veteran filmmaker Spike Lee. The actor could not understand why a lot of people sleep on his talent, but the Red Dragon star would not let unfair criticism taint the director’s reputation.

They worked together on the 2002 drama film 25th Hour, but even before that, he was already following the works of Lee.
Edward Norton Defends Spike Lee As A Filmmaker
During his interview via Gainsville Sun, actor Edward Norton confessed he’s a die-hard Spike Lee fan. He also thinks the filmmaker’s projects are underappreciated.
I wrote him a letter after He Got Game. I really loved that movie, and I thought people missed it. It had a lot of texture and layers. There is a lot of room for the actor and the audience in Spike Lee movies.

In recent years, we’ve seen the festival serve as a huge springboard for major players in the Oscar derby. Three of the last four winners of the festival’s top prize, the Palme d’Or, have nabbed Best Picture nominations: “Parasite” (2019), “Triangle of Sadness” (2022) and “Anatomy of a Fall” (2023). Other big winners at recent festivals that became big Oscar players include “Drive My Car,” “The Zone of Interest” and “BlacKkKlansman.” This year’s...

Actor Denzel Washington’s son John David Washington added to his resume by starring in the Christopher Nolan sci-fi feature Tenet. John David was already featured in several films by that point, but Washington found Tenet to be one of his son’s biggest films.

It seems Nolan had his eye on John David for a long time. Long before Tenet even went into production, Nolan stumbled onto a few of the actor’s earlier projects. He was more than impressed by what Washington brought to the table. In an interview with Esquire, it was noted that Nolan first became aware of John David after seeing him in the HBO series Ballers. From there, his interest in the actor grew after seeing the premiere of John David’s critically acclaimed film Blackkklansman.

When it comes to being a concierge at one of the world’s great hotels, Wes Anderson and The Grand Budapest Hotel got it (mostly) right.
“Of course, it’s a movie, so not everything is true,” says Maxime Nerkowski, chief concierge at the Carlton Cannes, a Regent Hotel, about Anderson’s 2014 Oscar winner in which Ralph Fiennes plays Monsieur Gustave H., concierge extraordinaire of a fictional Eastern European resort. “But the work, a lot of it, is like that. Doing whatever you can to fulfill your guests’ requests, however strange or unusual.”
The scene from the film where Gustave calls in a favor from the “society of the crossed keys,” a secret association of the best-of-the-best concierges from around the world, has its own real-life precedent. It’s called Les Clefs d’Or (The Golden Keys), and you can spot them by their lapel pins featuring, of course, a pair of gold keys.

Adam Driver is an actor who has appeared in numerous roles in many movies, which include Lincoln (2012), Frances Ha (2012), Inside Llewyn Davis (2013), BlacKkKlansman (2018), Marriage Story (2019), The Last Duel (2021), House of Gucci (2021), and Ferrari (2023), but one role stands out among mainstream fans, which is what of Kylo Ren, or Ben Solo, from the Star Wars franchise. And while the sequel trilogy was more clumsy than perfect, even ridiculous at times, Driver’s performance has been praised and Kylo Ren is still considered as one of the trilogy’s most important characters.
And while Kylo Ren died in the films, we have seen that Star Wars characters can – more or less miraculously – reappear in the series, as was the case with Darth Maul and Palpatine, so why not Kylo Ren? The actor was recently asked about the possibility of returning to the role of Kylo Ren, and we will reveal what he said.

Dev Patel’s feature directorial debut Monkey Man leads the new films at this weekend’s UK-Ireland box office, starting in 592 cinemas through Universal.
Directed, produced, from a story by and starring Patel, Monkey Man follows an anonymous young man who unleashes a campaign of violence against the corrupt leaders who murdered his mother, and continue to systematically victimise the poor and powerless.
Filmed in early 2021, Netflix originally bought worldwide rights to Monkey Man. After Jordan Peele boarded the title as producer through his Monkeypaw Productions, Universal acquired it from Netflix earlier this year. It debuted at SXSW last month.

A few years ago, after a few rough battles with the press and paparazzi and the cancellation of his MSNBC talk show, Alec Baldwin penned a much-publicized article announcing he’d be leaving “public life.” He reconsidered that departure and then appeared in the popular 2018 films “BlacKkKlansman,” “Mission Impossible: Fallout” and “A Star Is Born,” as well as the 2019 release “Motherless Brooklyn.” On the small screen, he appeared in the limited series “The Looming Tower,” recreated his recurring role on the reboot of “Will and Grace” and hosted “Match Game.”
Most notably Baldwin continued his appearances on “Saturday Night Live” lampooning Donald Trump. He made so many appearances in 2017 that he won an Emmy as Best Comedy Supporting Actor, his third career prize after his two leading wins for “30 Rock.”

The 2024 Oscar nominees for Best Actor are Bradley Cooper (“Maestro”), Colman Domingo (“Rustin”), Paul Giamatti (“The Holdovers”), Cillian Murphy (“Oppenheimer”), and Jeffrey Wright (“American Fiction”). Murphy (16/5) is favored to win by our odds, followed in order by Giamatti (18/5), Cooper (9/2), Wright (9/2), and Domingo (9/2).
Whereas last year’s lead male lineup was the first in almost nine decades to consist entirely of Oscars newcomers, this one includes three rookies and two general veterans. Standing alone in having already competed for this specific award is Cooper, who was previously recognized for “Silver Linings Playbook” (2013), “American Sniper” (2015), and “A Star Is Born” (2019). Since he personally helmed both “A Star Is Born” and “Maestro,” he is now the fourth person to direct himself to multiple acting nominations, following Laurence Olivier, Warren Beatty, and Clint Eastwood.

The films in contention for the 2024 Best Adapted Screenplay Oscar are “American Fiction,” “Barbie,” “Oppenheimer,” “Poor Things,” and “The Zone of Interest.” Our odds currently indicate that “American Fiction” (7/2) will win the award, followed in order of likelihood by “Oppenheimer” (18/5), “Barbie” (4/1), “Poor Things” (9/2), and “The Zone of Interest” (9/2).
This marks only the 14th instance in 96 years of all five Best Adapted Screenplay-nominated films also being in the running for Best Picture. Prior to the last time in 2017 – the year “Moonlight” achieved dual victories – this had happened only twice during the 21st century (2011; 2013) and once during the latter half of the 20th (1965). The bulk of cases occurred almost annually from 1934 to 1943, with the only inapplicable year being 1937.
Respective “The Zone of Interest” and “Oppenheimer” writers Jonathan Glazer and Christopher Nolan are simultaneously nominated for Best Director, while Nolan is also set to face off against “American Fiction” scripter Cord Jefferson in the Best Picture race.

“Michael,” the splashy forthcoming biopic about Michael Jackson from director Antoine Fuqua, has added actor Laura Harrier in a key role.
Harrier, of “BlacKkKlansman” and “Spider-man: Homecoming” fame, will portray pioneering female music executive Suzanne de Passe in the Lionsgate project.
De Passe was a creative assistant to Motown founder Berry Gordy, and is credited with convincing Gordy to sign The Jackson 5 to his label. De Passe costumed the world famous family group in early days, and later played a critical role in bringing the band and other Motown sensations to live television. “Oppenheimer” isn’t just ambling its way to an Oscar Best Picture win, it’s marching with purpose, destroying opponents at every awards ceremony. That continued to be the case on Saturday, February 24, in what was a thoroughly enjoyable SAG Awards ceremony. This was the latest installment in this year’s 35 boxes theory, which aims to calculate a film’s chances of winning the Oscar for Best Picture by judging their popularity across the industry throughout awards season.
Each box represents a key nomination or win at various awards groups that a film typically needs to snag in order to compete for or win Best Picture at the Academy Awards. The more boxes you tick off, the greater your support across the industry, the higher your chances of winning Best Picture — that’s the idea, anyway.
For example, in 2019, “Green Book” won 23 of these 35 boxes before winning Best Picture at the Oscars.

It’s becoming a repetitive tale. A major awards organization announces their nominations or winners and “Oppenheimer” extends its lead in the Oscars race for Best Picture. It’s the same again here in this latest round of our 35 boxes theory.
The theory documents 35 major races in the awards season, with each box representing a key nomination or victory at various awards organizations that potential Oscar Best Picture winners typically need to snag. The idea is, the more boxes you tick off, the more support you have across the industry, the better your film’s chances at winning Best Picture at the Academy Awards.
For example, in 2019, “Green Book” won 23 of these 35 boxes before winning Best Picture at the Oscars. Conversely, “Roma” filled in only 19 boxes while both “BlacKkKlansman” and “The Favourite” were at 20. Each of the three previous Best Picture winners prior to “Green Book” numbered among the top...

With just four days remaining until final Oscar voting officially opens, the race has taken a few unexpected turns at the BAFTA Awards.
Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer,” a biographical drama about the father of the atomic bomb, has continued to surge ahead after seven wins, including best film and director. Its trajectory towards a triumphant night on the Dolby Theatre stage on March 10 seems assured.
However, surprises abound with other awards contenders making pronounced showings. Yorgos Lanthimos’ sci-fi black comedy “Poor Things” garnered four prizes, including leading actress for Emma Stone, production design, special visual effects, costumes and makeup and hair. The unexpected success, particularly in makeup, could foreshadow a possible upset for presumed favorite “Maestro” at the upcoming Academy Awards. Notable, since Bradley Cooper and Carey Mulligan missed out on their respective lead acting prizes, signaling the Netflix feature will need a rebound sooner rather than later.

Actor Denzel Washington and director Spike Lee announced they are joining forces once more, the first time in 18 years, for a remake of Akira Kurosawa’s 1963 crime thriller “High and Low.” The duo have collaborated four times previously, on “Mo’ Better Blues,” “Malcolm X,” “He Got Game,” and, most recently, “Inside Man.”
“High and Low” was originally based on the novel “King’s Ransom” by the prolific American author Ed McBain. McBain was a nom de plume for Evan Hunter, who also wrote “The Blackboard Jungle” (adapted to a popular film with a significant early turn by Sidney Poitier) and was a co-screenwriter of Alfred Hitchcock’s “The Birds.”
The original “High and Low” starred Toshiro Mifune as an executive who faces a moral crisis during a pivotal moment of his career—just as he had intended to move a vast amount of his personal wealth for business reasons, his son...

Spike Lee and Denzel Washington are set to re-team for a remake of Akira Kurosawa’s 1963 crime thriller High And Low.
Denzel Washington has recently finished up work on Gladiator 2 for Ridley Scott and we know that at some point, he’s set to play Hannibal in Antoine Fuqua’s take on the mighty conqueror – you know, the elephant-riding, Rome-conquering one whose name still rings throughout history.
We don’t yet know when Hannibal will go before cameras but we do now know it won’t be Washington’s next project.
Instead, Washington will be working with another key collaborator: Spike Lee.
The duo are set to make their fifth film together according to The Hollywood Reporter. What’s more, it’s set to be a remake of an Akira Kurosawa movie.
Apple Studios and A24 have joined forces to back the project with A24 putting the film out for theatrical release.

“Oppenheimer” has been way ahead in the Oscars race this season. That lead has widened after the latest two rounds of our 35 boxes theory for making Oscar predicitons.
This test tracks a movie’s popularity across the entire awards season as various guilds and awards groups including the Golden Globes, the Critics Choice Awards, the BAFTAs, SAGs, DGAs, and PGAs. Some boxes represent key nominations and others represent vital wins that an Oscar Best Picture hopeful typically needs to win. The more boxes a film ticks off, the more popular it is across the film industry, and the greater its chances of winning Best Picture at the Academy Awards.

Christopher Nolan has built his name up over the years to the point that he’s widley considered the greatest director or our generation. His latest film, Oppenheimer, seems bound to finally win him an elusive best director Oscar. But, in the wild build up to his latest movie, many failed to consider his last movie, Tenet, which was unusually divisive for the director. With it set for a nationwide re-release next month, now’s a good time to look back on a movie that’s winning more and more fans every year.
Tenet was born from a simple idea that came to him while making his breakout hit Memento over 20 years ago. While putting that film together, he thought of a single image that helped him crack the way in which to tell a backwards story. The image was that of a bullet being sucked out of a wall.

“Oppenheimer” already had a healthy lead going in this round of the 35 boxes’ theory but after the BAFTAs released their nomination, that lead has only increased.
This theory aims to track an Oscar contender’s popularity across the entire industry throughout awards season. Each of the 35 boxes represents a key nomination or win at various awards groups that a potential Best Picture champion typically needs to tick off on their way to the Academy Awards’ biggest prize. The more boxes you tick, the greater your support across the industry, and the better your chances of winning Best Picture at the Oscars. That’s the idea anyway.

The finalists for the 36th USC Libraries Script Awards, honoring the most accomplished films and episodic series adaptations, have been announced. Among the selected are “American Fiction,” “Killers of the Flower Moon,” “Oppenheimer” and “Poor Things,” all top-tier contenders for Oscar attention. Ava DuVernay’s drama “Origin” was a surprise entry in the lineup, making her the second Black woman recognized by the awards body (the first was Dee Rees for 2017’s “Mudbound”).

The Critics Choice Awards held their annual ceremony on Sunday, January 14 and shared the love between Christopher Nolan‘s “Oppenheimer” and Greta Gerwig‘s “Barbie.” The former won eight awards while the latter won six. The Producers Guild of America announced their nominations on January 12, to continue this awards season. There were no surprises in the 10 films that made the lineup but it does add to this year’s 35 boxes theory.
This test takes a look at 35 key races across awards season, with some of the races in question revolving around securing certain nominations and others concerning wins. The idea is, the more boxes you tick, the stronger your industry-wide support, and the higher chances you’ve got of winning Best Picture at the Oscars.
For example, in 2019, “Green Book” won 23 of these 35 boxes before winning Best Picture at the Oscars. Conversely, “Roma” filled in only 19 boxes while both “BlacKkKlansman” and “The Favourite” were at 20. Each of the three previous Best Picture winners prior to “Green Book” numbered among the top three entries on our season-end charts.
This latest round tracks those aforementioned PGA nominations.

Welcome to the second edition of this Oscars theory — the 35 boxes. This test, which admittedly doesn’t have the catchiest name in the world, tracks 35 key races across awards season in order to give us some insight into which films garner the strongest industry-wide support. This Oscars scorecard isn’t an exact science — but this test breaks down the precursor awards in both nominations and wins to give us 35 key races that aims to give us some insight into which films receive the strongest industry-wide support. Some films will do better in acting races, other films’ strengths lie in writing or directing, and several movies will have other strengths still. To be a leading Best Picture contender, however, a film needs to compete on all fronts. This is what this test aims to do — to see which films pick up the most nominations and wins in key categories at the major precursor awards to see how much support they have garnered. The idea is, the more boxes you tick, the stronger your chances of winning Best Picture.

Jordan Peele burst onto the filmmaking scene back in 2017 with critical acclaim, box office success, and even a huge win at the Academy Awards, making Get Out one of the most promising debut features in the history of the horror genre. Peele proved he was the real deal with both Us in 2019 and later Nope in 2022, and he’s now hard at work on his fourth movie.
Universal Pictures recently bumped Jordan Peele’s untitled fourth movie from its original December 25, 2024 release date, and we haven’t been provided with a new date. The delay is due to last year’s SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes, but Peele teases in a new chat with the Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend podcast that he’s excited to get back behind the camera this year.

A New Year means lots of removals from Netflix and January 1st is looking busy, with over 100 movies set to leave the service already. Below, we’ll be keeping track of all the Netflix departures for the first month of 2024.
First, a few housekeeping notes as to how Netflix removals work before we dive in. Due to licensing agreements, shows and movies added to Netflix aren’t added forever. Instead, they’re essentially rented for a fixed period. All the shows below have their current window on Netflix ending and will likely be bound for a rival streaming service.
We list titles slightly differently from other outlets, with our listings being the actual day of removal. If you want to watch any titles scheduled to expire on January 1st, for example, you’ll need to watch by the end of December 31st.

“Poor Things,” “Oppenheimer,” “Killers of the Flower Moon,” “American Fiction,” “All of Us Strangers,” and “Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret” all received Best Adapted Screenplay bids from the Critics Choice Awards thus giving their Oscar hopes in this category a timely boost. Some of them were lauded even further at the Golden Globes, which nominated “Poor Things,” “Oppenheimer,” and “Killers of the Flower Moon” alongside “Barbie,” “Past Lives,” and “Anatomy of Fall” in a combined Best Screenplay category.
So, those are the preferences of those two awards groups. But what about the tastes of the academy? Well, below is a chart detailing the last 10 Oscar winners for Best Adapted Screenplay. We’re going to break this down to see what the academy likes and try to apply the findings to this year’s race.

Rotten Tomatoes and the Academy Awards don’t often go hand in hand. In fact, the Rt scores of Best Picture nominees/winners are a mixed bag. “Parasite” won Best Picture with a Rt score of 99% while “Green Book” emerged victorious with a score of just 77%. The site dishes out percentage scores to movie’s based on the film’s collection of critical reviews. The higher the score, the better the movie. Supposedly.
But, that’s not how it always work in tandem with the Oscars. For instance, “Black Panther,” “BlacKkKlansman,” and “Roma” all scored 96% but lost Best Picture to “Green Book.” Perhaps, if the Oscars listened to Rotten Tomatoes more, things would go a little more smoothly? Probably not but, just for fun, let’s pretend that Rotten Tomatoes are in charge of this year’s Academy Awards.
With that in mind, here are the 10 Best Picture nominees the...

“Get Out” fans will have to wait longer for Jordan Peele‘s fourth horror film, as Universal has pushed back its release from its initial Christmas season 2024 slot due to the recently ended strikes by writers and actors.
Peele’s untitled upcoming project is getting a “strike-related” release delay, TheWrap has learned, with the new release date to be determined. Peele’s film had been set to go against a holiday slate that includes Paramount’s “Sonic the Hedgehog 3,” Disney’s “Mufasa: The Lion King” and Focus Features’ horror film “Nosferatu.”
Since his feature debut “Get Out” became a pop culture sensation and won him an Oscar for its screenplay, Jordan Peele has become one of the few filmmakers in Hollywood with the clout among audiences to make his name the biggest selling point of his films.
Combined, Peele’s three original horror films — “Get Out,” “Us” and “Nope...

Films are available. Then they aren't. Entire film series can be accessed on one day, and then are nowhere to be found the next. The tides roll in, the tides recede. The sun rises, the sun sets. So it goes with streaming.
Thanks to the Writers Strike of 2023, and the revelation that exclusive in-studio streaming services aren't an entirely viable business model, it's become more important than ever to keep tabs on what might be available on notable services in any given week. Sadly, no streaming service purports to be a permanent archive of film and TV, and even the most deeply branded properties are now being shopped around outside of their home studios; to some, it may feel strange that "Merry Little Batman" debuted on Prime Video rather than the expected Warner Bros.-owned Max streaming service. It seems that the most logical way streaming services can move forward...

Hollywood star Bradley Cooper recently spoke with director Spike Lee, and the actor struggled to remember the name of the film for which he unsuccessfully auditioned and Spike Lee rejected him.
The two men discussed ‘Maestro’, Cooper’s penetrating look at the marriage of musical genius Leonard Bernstein and Felicia Montealegre (played by a note-perfect Carey Mulligan) when the conversation shifts to this first meeting, reports Variety.
“You were so kind to me,” Cooper said. “I was losing my mind because, as a young boy growing up in Philadelphia, ‘Do the Right Thing’ messed me up in the best way.”
Though Lee didn’t hire Cooper that day, he’s become a fan of his work as well as a friend — the two bonded on the Oscar circuit when Lee was up for “BlacKkKlansman” and Cooper was promoting ‘A Star Is Born’.
