Sometimes, it’s easy to forget the world is a beautiful place filled with unimaginable beauty and wonders beneath every shadow, racing riverbed, and endless sky. We need to remember how nature came first and what the world could look like if it were to retake its course. Thankfully, Dreamworks Animation‘s The Wild Robot trailer reminds us of Mother Nature’s grand and beguiling majesty, even if that vision is through the eyes of a character made of metal and wires.
The Wild Robot is an adaptation of Peter Brown’s award-winning #1 New York Times best-seller. The series has three books: The Wild Robot, The Wild Robot Escapes, and The Wild Robot Protects. The story follows a robot – Rozzum unit 7134, “Roz” for short – that becomes shipwrecked on an uninhabited island and must adapt to its new surroundings to survive. Throughout Rozzum’s epic journey, the curious automaton forms relationships with woodland creatures,...

Four years have passed since Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige announced that Blade was being rebooted as a Marvel Cinematic Universe project starring Mahershala Ali in the lead role… and it seems like the development of Blade has been causing headaches behind the scenes ever since that announcement was made. The project has passed through the hands of multiple screenwriters – Stacy Osei-Kuffour (PEN15), Michael Starrbury (When They See Us), True Detective creator Nic Pizzolatto, Beau DeMayo (The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf). It had a director in Bassam Tariq (Mogul Mowgli). Tariq cast Delroy Lindo (Get Shorty) and Aaron Pierre (Old) alongside Ali – then he dropped out due to “scheduling issues”, and the character Pierre would have been playing was apparently written out of the story. Yann Demange (White Boy Rick) signed on to direct the film. Mia Goth (Pearl) was cast, possibly as the villain Lilith. Blade was just...

Before Indiana Jones entered director James Mangold’s life, Harrison Ford told him he was worried Indy was looking too old.
It was the fall of 2019, and Mangold had joined the team working on the film adaptation of “The Call of the Wild,” in which Ford plays a rugged frontiersman, to help with reshoots. In their downtime, Ford began confiding in Mangold about the fifth “Indiana Jones” movie, which had been bouncing around in development for the better part of three years. Steven Spielberg and screenwriter David Koepp had conceived a roughly five-minute opening sequence set during World War II, in which Ford would be digitally de-aged. Ford wasn’t sure it was a good idea.
“Harrison told me he was nervous, because he felt like if people saw him younger, when they confronted Indiana in his 70s they’d be disappointed,” Mangold says, sitting on a cream-colored couch inside...

Dan Stevens is officially taking over the lead voice role in Hulu’s “Solar Opposites” from Justin Roiland.
Roiland, who co-created the animated series, was fired from the show in January after it was revealed he was being charged with domestic violence. He was also removed from the Hulu animated show “Koala Man” at that time. The charges against Roiland were dismissed in March.
Stevens will play Korvo, described as “a grouchy alien who always wears ceremonial robes and professes to hate Earth. He desperately wants to fix their spaceship so he can escape to a new planet.”
A first look video featuring Stevens can be seen below.
He joins fellow cast members Thomas Middleditch, Sean Giambrone, and Mary Mack. Season 4 will debut on August 14, and the show has already been renewed for Season 5.

Does Hollywood even know what to do with Omar Sy? For years, the captivating and charismatic French actor has been relegated to, at best, minor roles in tentpoles like "Captain America: The First Avenger," "X-Men: Days of Future Past," and the "Jurassic World" trilogy. He put his charms and comedy skills to work as a dog-loving mail carrier in "The Call of the Wild," but beyond that, Sy is basically a no-name in the eyes of your average U.S. moviegoer.
Thank goodness, then, for "Lupin," the Netflix heist thriller show that's almost single-handedly made Sy a known entity in the U.S. It's a bit surprising it's taken off, too, given its source material. The French TV series centers on Assane Diop (Sy), a cunning master of disguise and expert thief seeking payback against Hubert Pellegrini (Hervé Pierre) — the slimy business tycoon who framed Assane's late father and got...

“It’s not the years, it’s the mileage,” a weary Indiana Jones famously bemoaned in Raiders of the Lost Ark.
In the upcoming fifth film in the saga, The Dial of Destiny, it’s the years and the mileage.
Star Harrison Ford is now 80 years old, which makes him almost certainly the only octogenarian to ever lead a wall-to-wall action film from a major Hollywood studio.
For director James Mangold (Ford v Ferrari) — who has known Ford for years and previously worked with him on The Call of the Wild — Ford/Indy’s age presented challenges and opportunities to tell a different kind of adventure in the saga’s eagerly awaited fifth film coming June 30, which sees Indiana teaming up with his goddaughter (Phoebe Waller-Bridge) on a new quest.

If you thought the Mouse House was done trying to make Disney+ Day happen, then you don't know Mickey Mouse. 11 months after bombarding the Internet with the onslaught of news that was Disney+ Investor Day in December 2020, Disney revealed its plans to mark the two-year anniversary of its streaming service with its first-ever Disney+ Day on November 12, 2021. It did not go well, between the early leaks, confusing Twitter threads, and sneak preview videos being hidden behind paywalls where those who're not already signed up for Disney+ couldn't access them.
We will see what lessons the company took away from that kerfuffle (assuming it learned anything) when it hosts its second annual Disney+ Day on Thursday, September 8, 2022, ahead of the D23 Expo taking place over the weekend after from September 9-11. In the meantime, here's a run-down of the biggest films and TV shows coming to Disney's streamer next month.

September is quite the month over at Disney+. The Disney streaming giant is the perfect place to spend the early months of back-to-school season, with something for the entire family. If you’re a Marvel fan, no doubt you’ll continue to watch the adventures of Jennifer Walters (Tatiana Maslany) in “She-Hulk: Attorney at Law.” For fans of “Rogue One,” ready to venture to a galaxy far, far away, there’s new spin-off series “Andor.” Then Halloween comes early with the premiere of the long-awaited sequel, “Hocus Pocus 2,” starring Bette Midler, Kathy Najimy, and Sarah Jessica Parker.
With plenty more on the docket, we here at IndieWire are laying out everything coming to Disney+ this month. But among the many titles (and after plenty of hit-and-miss Disney+ franchise extensions), “Star Wars” still looms large. Originally announced at the D23 fan convention back in 2019, audiences will finally get to see...

Few companies have devoted as much time, energy, and money to protecting their brand as Disney. Since the first foundations were laid in the House of Mouse, Disney has portrayed itself as a safe place, a haven for kid-friendly content, designed to avoid any controversy that would drive away customers families. When it decided to pursue viewers of PG+ entertainment, Disney formed sub-studios like Hollywood Pictures and Touchstone Pictures, which allowed them to put out films such as Good Morning, Vietnam or V.I. Warshawski without tarnishing the main brand.
When Disney purchased 20th Century Fox in 2019, its main goal was the acquisition of popular Marvel properties X-Men and the Fantastic Four. But it came along with a number of movies that didn’t match the Disney brand, both in production and in the back catalog. Thus far, Disney has maintained its brand separation by letting family-friendly properties from Fox...

Top Gun: Maverick star Greg Tarzan Davis is here to remind you that small moments can still leave big impressions.
In 2018, Davis auditioned for a bit part in Harrison Ford’s The Call of the Wild, and he made such an impact on casting director Denise Chamian that she quickly called him back to audition for a classified project. When that audition led to an eventual callback, that’s when Davis met Maverick director Joseph Kosinski who revealed that he had already begun the process of auditioning for his Top Gun legacy sequel.
Once Tom Cruise watched his tape and gave his blessing, Davis was officially cast in the role of Lt. Javy “Coyote” Machado, but it wasn’t exactly the role that audiences are currently seeing on the big screen.

“Top Gun: Maverick” just screened at CinemaCon in Las Vegas, and the film appears to have taken the audience’s breath away.
Initial reactions are positively glowing, praising director Joseph Kosinski’s approach to the film’s aerial flight sequences and action while also acknowledging that the sequel is surprisingly emotional.
Starring Tom Cruise, who reprises his role as Maverick from the 1986 film, the sequel will fly into theaters May 27, 2022. Val Kilmer will also reprise the role of “Iceman.”
“#TopGunMaverick is a profound cinematic experience and easily the best film of the year,” TheWrap’s Drew Taylor wrote. “What Kosinski, @chrismcquarrie, @eddiehamilton and of course @TomCruise have accomplished is epic and intimate, heart stopping and heartbreaking. Exclusive: Firestarter reboot lead Ryan Kiera Armstrong and Evil Dead alum Shiloh Fernandez are among cast to have joined Nicolas Cage in action-western The Old Way, which we revealed last week.
In The Old Way, Cage stars as Colton Briggs, a former gunslinger who now runs a general store and lives quietly with his family. When a gang of outlaws murders his wife in cold blood, Briggs returns home to find his world burning. He unearths his sidearm and saddles up with an unlikely partner: his twelve-year-old daughter. The project marks Cage’s first ‘traditional’ western.
Armstrong, who plays Briggs’ daughter Brooke, recently starred in American Horror Story: Double Feature on FX and will soon be seen in Blumhouse’s Firestarter, where she will reprise the role of Charlie, made famous by Drew Barrymore in the original 1984 adaptation of Stephen King’s classic novel. This Italian adaptation of London’s 1909 novel follows the ascent of a proletarian novelist to popular success which proves a bitter disappointment
The terrible loneliness of success is the subject of this absorbing movie, equal in some strange way to the loneliness of failure; it’s also about the secret and shameful feeling that failure is the one truthful state of being, which the successful person has had to renounce. Martin Eden is also about capitalism and enterprise and the great 20th-century promise that hard work and an audacious gamble on a certain career path at the start of one’s life can carry anyone, however lowly born, on to riches. And more importantly, it is about the dizzying promise that the mass communication made possible by commerce will make art itself lucrative: that actually writing novels, capturing the imagination of millions, could exalt you to heroic celebrity.

As we await the Academy Award nominations, the Golden Raspberry Awards have chimed in with their own set of nominees. The Razzies, as they’re known, supposedly celebrate the worst in cinema each year. Of course, they rarely actually cite anything more than the easy targets, so the 41st ceremony is going to be more of the same. Personally, I think things like this are wholly unnecessary, trafficking in negativity and snark. However, people get a kick out of them, so we’re sharing, nonetheless. So, take a look and then basically pay them no mind afterwards… Here are the Razzie nominees: Worst Picture 365 Days Absolute Proof Dolittle Fantasy Island Music Worst Actor Robert Downey Jr. – Dolittle Mike Lindell (The “My Pillow” Guy) – Absolute Proof Michele Morrone – 365 Days Adam Sandler – Hubie Halloween David Spade – The Wrong Missy Worst Actress Anne Hathaway – The Last Thing He Wanted & The Witches...

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences on Thursday revealed the 366 feature films that are eligible for consideration at the 93rd Oscars, which are set to air April 25 live on ABC.
The total number of films is up from last year’s 344 films in contention.
This year’s list was compiled based on tweaked eligibility rules implemented because of the coronavirus pandemic, which has pushed the ceremony to its latest date ever. For this year, feature films had to open by February 28 in a commercial motion picture theater for a seven-day qualifying run in at least one of six metro areas: Los Angeles County, New York City, the Bay Area, Chicago, Miami and Atlanta. Drive-in theaters open nightly were included as qualifying venues, as were films intended for theatrical release but because of the lockdown made available first via streaming, VOD service or other broadcast.

If there is any category that was full of surprises on Oscar’s shortlist day, it’s Visual Effets. To say there were unexpected selections and a slew of snubs is a major understatement. Of course, expected contenders “Tenet,” “Mank” and “Birds of Prey” made the cut, but that was about it.

An animated film, “Soul,” is among the 10 qualifiers as is the documentary “Welcome to Chechnya.” The biggest snub has to be “Wonder Woman 1984” with other VFX spectacles “Greyhound,” “The Call of the Wild,” “The Old Guard,” “New Mutants,” “Monster Hunter” and “Dolittle” all on the outside looking in.

This year’s Oscars have set a new record for the largest number of entries ever in the Best Original Song category, but the 105 eligible songs do not include Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross’ “(If Only You Could) Save Me,” a 1930s-style big band song from “Mank” that was recently nominated for the second annual Society of Composers and Lyricists Awards.
The song is heard briefly coming from a radio in the background of one scene and plays for only about 40 seconds. Academy rules require “a clearly audible, intelligible, substantive rendition of both lyric and melody,” and the song was judged to not fulfill that requirement.
Other songs that didn’t make the list, although they were thought to be in the running, include “Uh Oh” from “Promising Young Woman” and “Boss Bitch” from “Birds of Prey.” Even without those, the list of eligible songs tops 100 for the first time...

Photo: Indiana Jones/Lucasfilm The Indiana Jones films are notable for being extremely exciting and for maximising the star power of its eternally charming, sarcasm-prone star, Harrison Ford. The franchise boasts the oomph you would expect of a team that combines the talents of Star Wars creator George Lucas, Hollywood legend Steven Spielberg, and uber-composer John Williams. At their best, the Indiana Jones films maintain a B-movie feel despite their huge reach. The franchise isn’t perfect though - its depiction of all things non-American is highly problematic, and it suffers from, well, the existence of its fourth entry. Cinema admissions in France, Europe’s biggest movie market, plunged 70% in 2020, compared with 2019, decimated by Covid-19, which saw French cinemas shutter for 176 days this year, France’s National Film Board (Cnc) announced on Wednesday.
Total ticket sales came in at 65.1 million, according to the Cnc, 65.2 million according to Comscore, which valued that trawl at €450 million ($549 million) in gross box office. Given that France saw 213 million admissions and total box office earnings of $1.62 billion in 2019, according to European Audiovisual Observatory estimates, 2020 results saw the market lose more than $1 billion in cinema ticket sales.
In such straightened circumstances, U.S. movies monopolized France’s Top 5, with best scores being punched by Christopher Nolan’s “Tenet” (2.3 million admissions), “1917” (2.2 million) and “Sonic the Hedgehog” (2.1 million). No French film made the Top 5 – unusual for France, which boasts the strongest local industry of any major market in Europe.
In contrast, however, French films’ market soared from June 22 to Oct.

As Europe cracks down on moviegoing and ski tourism to stem Covid-19 infections, Dubai-based exhibitor Vox Cinemas is instead launching a movie theater in an indoor ski resort being touted as the Middle East’s first cinema in the snow.
Located inside Dubai’s Mall of the Emirates — which is home to the city’s indoor, snow-covered ski hill and to penguin shows — Vox Cinema’s new Snow Cinema features socially-distanced lounge-style seating and a wide range of comfort food options. Besides popcorn, they comprise: hot chocolate, also peppermint flavored, and a savory menu that includes roasted baby potatoes topped with raclette, hotdogs and burgers, all to be followed by “decadent desserts such as festive mince pies and gingerbread Dutch pancakes,” according to promotional materials.

Disney+ UK has unveiled its September content schedule, and the big centrepiece – as you may have guessed – is the premiere of Mulan, which will skip its UK cinema release after a controversial decision by Disney bosses, who previously hadn’t been very keen to put their upcoming big budget projects on the streaming service during 2020’s ongoing madness.
The unveiling of the highly anticipated live-action Mulan movie on Disney+ seems to be a first step towards bypassing cinemas for the foreseeable future, and it will be interesting to see how successful the gambit is with a price tag of £19.99 attached to the experience. The film certainly has a strong cast, with Liu Yifei as Mulan, Donnie Yen, Jason Scott Lee, Yoson An, Gong Li, and Jet Li in a supporting role.
If the reviews are strong, funnelling Mulan straight to streaming globally in exchange for some extra cash from subscribers...

Dan Stevens on His Biggest Summer Ever, from the ‘Bizarre’ Charm of ‘Eurovision’ to New Horror Movie
Dan Stevens is very good at keeping busy. A decade into the most visible part of his career — kickstarted by his star turn on “Downton Abbey,” and only helped along by such varied film roles as “The Guest,” “Beauty and the Beast,” and “The Man Who Invented Christmas” and the daring series “Legion” — the British actor remains hard to categorize, though he is consistently prolific. While the summer of 2020 looks different than anyone could have possibly expected, it has offered a few delights, including two roles for Stevens, who is riding high on the success of Netflix’s winning musical comedy “Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga” and ramping up for the release of the chilling “The Rental,” marking his return to his most beloved genres.
That those genres are “horror” and “musicals” speaks to Stevens’ range, the one connective thread between all his work. Well, that and the terror.
