Future Islands have returned with “The Fight,” the latest single from their forthcoming album, People Who Aren’t There Anymore.
Built around a down-tempo beat, “The Fight” is colored by an ethereal synth soundscape of hazy chords and glistening counter-melodies. Underneath, a deep, steady bass line holds down the bottom end, while overtop, the band’s Sam Herring delivers the kind of impassioned performance that only he can provide, singing fiery lines about self-preservation. “I won’t fade away,” the chorus goes. “I will face every day/ As if it’s my last one/ And I will keep you safe/ Just like our past was/ Fight for love every day.”
“The Fight” also arrives with an animated music video, matching the tonality of the song with abstract depictions of a dark-haired figure in red. Watch it below.

Explosions in the Sky have announced End, their first new album in seven years. It’s out today, September 15th through Temporary Residence Ltd.
“Our starting point was the concept of an ending—death, or the end of a friendship or relationship,” Eits shared in a statement. “Every song comes from a story, or an idea one of us has had that we’ve all expanded on and made its own world. Maybe it’s our nature, but we kept feeling that the album title was ultimately open to a lot more interpretation—the end of a thing or a time can mean a stop, but it can also mean a beginning, and what happens after one thing ends might pale in comparison to what it becomes next.”
Beginning in September, Eits will take the album on the road on an expansive 26-city tour. Tickets are currently available for purchase here.

Another day brings another serving of Candy, as Hulu’s true crime series (about Candy Montgomery’s deadly 1980 encounter with neighbor Betty Gore) releases a daily episode this Monday through Friday.
The daily release plan is not entirely unprecedented, but it is very unusual — even in this day and age where streamers are experimenting with any and all scheduling ideas. Beyond the staid “binge” drops of entire seasons, you have “the first three and then weekly” (a la Hulu’s The Girl From Plainville), “4+2+2+2” (as Prime Video’s Bosch: Legacy is in the midst of doing), and other permutations.

Exclusive: Embankment has launched global sales on director Adam McClelland’s feature documentary Born Wild, about mankind’s connection with animals.
Born Wild charts the relationship between two intertwined communities who inhabit North Carolina’s storm-beaten and beautiful Outer Banks coastline: its human population, and its tribes of wild mustang horses. Descendants of the first colonies, the horses have survived for centuries. But now threatened with extinction, the two dwindling groups of survivors must learn from and support each other if they are to last in this delicately balanced environment between land and sea, already fast disappearing as the effects of climate change take hold.
Embankment will show first footage of the film – currently in production – to buyers ahead of the virtual EFM.

Paris-based sales agent Luxbox has acquired world sales rights to “Dos Estaciones” which will world premiere in World Cinema Dramatic Competition at this month’s Sundance Festival.
Produced by Mexico’s Sin Sitio Cine in co-production with France’s In Vivo Films and the U.S., “Dos Estaciones” marks the feature debut of Juan Pablo González, co-director of the Film Directing program at the California Institute of the Arts (CalArts) whose shorts have won at Slamdance and New Orleans.
Co-written with Ana Isabel Fernández and Ilana Coleman (“The Inventory”), “Dos Estaciones” pays tribute to Mexico’s artisanal tequila makers, a dying breed as they are bought up by foreign corporations.
In striking parallel and contrast, the feature underscores the meticulous craftsmanship and artistic ambition of art films emerging from Mexico and the rest of Latin America which question received wisdom and cliches, offering an alternative narrative.

Where to Watch ‘Saturday Morning All Star Hits!’: Netflix
Even a minute longer, and “Saturday Morning All Star Hits!” probably wouldn’t work. With a handful of weekend cartoon parodies, fake commercials/trailers, and a wacky brother hijinks framing device, taking on any more than a half-hour at a time would be a recipe for this Netflix show to overstay its welcome.
Improbably, though, it doesn’t. Never spending more than a few minutes in any of these worlds, “Saturday Morning All Star Hits!” (take the first letters of each name in that title if you want a totally tubular surprise) recaptures the vibe of Saturday morning favorites in all their camcorder-chic glory.
The show is the combined brainchild of the live-action “Brigsby Bear” duo Kyle Mooney and Dave McCary and the animation stylings of Ben Jones, a vet of “Axe Cop” and “Neo Yokio.

Noel Clarke is officially out from his production company, Unstoppable Film and TV, following multiple sexual misconduct and bullying allegations that emerged against the British actor this spring.
A spokesperson for “Fleabag” superindie All3Media, which backed Unstoppable in 2018, tells Variety: “Noel Clarke has left Unstoppable Film and TV. Jason Maza has also left the company.”
The Discovery and Liberty Global-owned All3Media began investigating Clarke immediately after an investigation by British newspaper The Guardian was published in late April. He was swiftly suspended from his company, alongside Maza, who ran the company with Clarke.
Clarke and Maza formed Unstoppable in 2007, and produced over 10 feature films, including “Brotherhood,” “10×10” and “The Fight.” The company also co-produced Sky’s buddy cop comedy “Bulletproof,” starring Clarke and Ashley Walters. The legal drama “Reasonable Doubt” is moving to Onyx Collective on Hulu for development after previously being set up at ABC in 2019, Variety has learned.
Andrew Eccles for Variety
The series will be executive produced by Kerry Washington and Pilar Savone for Simpson Street and Larry Wilmore via Wilmore Films. The show has opened a writers room with an all-Black staff. Raamla Mohamed is writing and executive producing the series. Attorney Shawn Holley is a co-executive producer as is Jon Leshay. ABC Signature will produce. Simpson Street and Mohamed are currently under overall deals with the studio.
In “Reasonable Doubt,” viewers would judge Jax Stewart for her questionable ethics and wild interpretations of the law, until they’re the one in trouble. Then they’ll see her for what she is: the most brilliant and fearless defense attorney in Los Angeles who bucks the justice system at every chance she gets.

Gretchen Carlson, the former Fox News host who sued the network for sexual harassment and won, will be the subject of a new documentary, “In Her Own Words,” which will examine the use of non-disclosure agreements to silence whistleblowers. The film will also chronicle the efforts of Carlson and Julie Roginsky to launch Lift Our Voices, a nonprofit initiative which is trying to eliminate NDAs and mandatory arbitration clauses from the workplace.
“In Her Own Words” will be made with Carlson’s full participation and collaboration, but in a sad bit of irony, the newscaster can’t address certain parts of her time at Fox News as she remains bound by the NDA that accompanied her settlement.

“The Heist,” the true story of the theft of Willem de Kooning’s iconic “Woman-Ochre” from an Arizona art museum, is in the works from “The Love Bugs” director Allison Otto. Nonfiction studio Xtr will back the new documentary in partnership with
Roots Productions’ Jill Howerton and Josh Kunau, the producers of “The Devil We Know,” Museum + Crane’s Caryn Capotosto, the maker of “Won’t You Be My Neighbor.” Mark Monroe, writer of the Academy Award winning films “Icarus” and “The Cove,” penned the screenplay.
It’s easy to see why that caliber of talent was attracted to the story. The day after Thanksgiving, 1985, one of de Kooning’s most famous paintings was sliced from its frame and stolen from the walls of the museum where it was housed. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences on Thursday revealed the 366 feature films that are eligible for consideration at the 93rd Oscars, which are set to air April 25 live on ABC.
The total number of films is up from last year’s 344 films in contention.
This year’s list was compiled based on tweaked eligibility rules implemented because of the coronavirus pandemic, which has pushed the ceremony to its latest date ever. For this year, feature films had to open by February 28 in a commercial motion picture theater for a seven-day qualifying run in at least one of six metro areas: Los Angeles County, New York City, the Bay Area, Chicago, Miami and Atlanta. Drive-in theaters open nightly were included as qualifying venues, as were films intended for theatrical release but because of the lockdown made available first via streaming, VOD service or other broadcast.

Laverne Cox and Kerry Washington know all too well what it’s like to be “the first,” as well as the mix of pride, pressure and responsibility that comes with it. That’s why they’re working to ensure that they’re providing opportunities for underrepresented artists both on-screen and behind the scenes.
“All day Inauguration Day I was wearing my shirt that has [Vice President Kamala Harris’] face as a little girl, and it says, ‘The first, but not the last.’ Because that has to be the message,” Washington says. “The goal can’t be to be the only one in the room.”
Cox agrees: “The question for me has always been, ‘How do we keep the door open? How do we open a window? How do we just let the whole wall come down, so that more people can get in?’ That is the challenge of being a first something.”

Monday is the start of five days of voting to determine shortlists in the nine Oscar categories that narrow down the field before the start of nomination balloting. In the Best Documentary Feature and Best International Feature Film categories, 238 and 93 films, respectively, will be reduced to 15 semifinalists.
In each of those categories, voters must see a minimum number of entries, drawn from a “required viewing” list sent to each member, in order to vote. Documentary voters must see more than 30 films, international voters must see 12. Shortlists in all categories will be announced on Feb. 9.
Here are our thoughts on these contests; on Tuesday, we’ll look at the below-the-line categories that also use shortlists.

As the status quo continues to be challenged and dismantled, documentaries are uniquely poised to tackle the day’s most pressing issues, from voter suppression to the pernicious reverberations of sexual assault. The Academy has added 93 more films to the members-only screening room devoted to entries in the Best Documentary Feature category, bringing the total number of eligible contenders to a record-shattering 215.
The previous record for entries was 170 in 2017. And this year’s crop of nonfiction films is expected to pass that number by an even bigger margin — at least 50 — once a final, smaller group of films is added to the screening room in January.
New eligibility rules that were passed in the wake of the Covid-19 theater closings made it easier for documentaries to qualify this year by allowing them to do so by playing at film festivals, even virtual ones, and by easing requirements for theatrical runs. In an email to members detailing the new additions, the Academy said, “The Documentary Branch Executive Committee felt it was important to be inclusive and supportive of documentary filmmakers in this unprecedented and challenging year.

As of June 2020, the American Civil Liberties Union has filed 173 lawsuits against the current administration to protect the rights of people. These issues include the ability to have reproductive healthcare, fighting back against the administration’s attempts to ban transgender individuals from having equal opportunities, and, currently, still arguing for the release of immigrants in cages. Directors Eli B. Despres, Josh Kriegman, and Elyse Steinberg (Weiner) have shined a light on four of these lawsuits in The Fight, arriving this summer following a Sundance premiere.
Spanning from January 2017 to summer 2019, the directors explore the day to day proceedings of ACLU attorneys and case workers, who valiantly fight for the rights of the disenfranchised, such as for a mother who is separated from her child, a soldier on the brink of losing his career as a result of his transgender status, and a woman’s reproductive right to abortion, threatened by...

Sundance adds: "The Fight is an inspiring, emotional insider look at how these important battles are fought and the legal gladiators on the front lines fighting them... [it] celebrates the unsung heroes who fiercely work to protect our freedoms." An important and timely documentary film that can help change the future. Focusing on four specific...

The American Civil Liberties Union has filed 173 lawsuits against President Donald Trump’s administration, four of which will be spotlighted in “The Fight,” an upcoming documentary directed by Eli B. Despres, Josh Kriegman, and Elyse Steinberg.
Distributors Magnolia Pictures and Topic Studios have released the trailer for the documentary, which hones in on the Aclu’s legal battle to protect abortion rights, a case regarding a census question on citizenship, immigrant family separations, and the transgender military ban. “The Fight” will premiere on July 31 and promises an inside look at the 100-year-old organization, which has rarely been covered in-depth by Hollywood.
Here’s the film’s synopsis: “Only days after the 2017 inauguration of Donald Trump, furious Americans gathered at airports across the country in protest of the Muslim ban. But it was the efforts of the American Civil Liberties Union, waging the fight in federal court, that turned the tide,...

With Hollywood brought to a standstill by the coronavirus pandemic, there are thousands of entertainment industry workers left wondering how they will make ends meet, for however long the lockdown lasts. But over the past week, the entertainment industry’s unions have gathered resources to help workers find financial support.
Guild officials who spoke to TheWrap say that they do not have enough to help all workers in need, and that federal aid will be needed, not only for direct recovery checks but to also help ensure that entertainment workers qualify for government relief despite the unconventional nature of their employment. Still, they encourage those who suddenly find themselves without income because of the industry-wide shutdown to reach out to their respective guilds for support, and for those who can afford it to contribute in any way they can.

After slow start, market exploded into life.

Then the market in Park City exploded into life and at time of writing buyers are believed to have laid out in the region of $80m all told.

The narrative feature “Minari” and the documentary “Boys State” have won the top prizes from the U.S. jury at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival, which announced its winners at an awards ceremony on Saturday night. “Minari,” director Lee Isaac Chung’s coming-of-age story about a Korean-American boy, also won the festival’s audience award.
The only other films to win more than one award were “Identifying Features” (“Sin Senas Particulares”), Fernanda Valadez’s drama about a Mexican woman searching for a son who disappeared while attempting to cross the border; and “I Carry You With Me,” in which documentary director Heidi Ewing makes her narrative feature debut about an aspiring Mexican chef whose life changes when his sexuality becomes public. “Identifying Features” won the audience award in the World Cinema Dramatic section and a jury award for its screenplay, while “I Carry You With Me” won the audience award in...

The Sundance Film Festival concluded with the announcement of its grand jury awards, honoring Lee Isaac Chung’s “Minari,” a semi-autobiographical glimpse into the Korean American director’s Arkansas upbringing, and “Boys State,” an immersive vérité look at an impassioned class of politically inclined Texas teens who participate in an annual mock-government competition.
Ethan Hawke and his fellow U.S. dramatic competition jurors Wash Westmoreland and Rodrigo Garcia gave the directing prize to Radha Blank for her “The 40-Year-Old Version.”
Caught off-guard by the award, Blank riffed, “Anybody who feels there’s an expiration on a passion, f— that shit. If it’s in you to be a rapper, a parent, a director in your 40s, do that sh–.” Many of the night’s speeches reflected similar attitudes, as directors who’d confronted discrimination in order to make their films shared their experiences from the podium.
