Great game
loganmonroe1 February 2018
I first got this in early access with a humble bundle pack and really didn't get all that into it. Then I finally came back to it after it was finally released and man am I addicted. None of the other survival games hooked me like this one. The swimming may seem like a novel mechanic, but it really adds depth to the survival genre. It's a fun progression which has yet to get boring. It's simple, but not too simple which may only have it's draw back later in game play where the simplicity will show its face. For what it is, it's an amazingly fun survival game with a fun surprising story along the way.

A deep dive into your own subconscious
elgsdyr2 February 2020
This game is one big (and amazing) metaphor for shadow work. Once you breach the surface for the first time you begin facing the (initially) uncomfortable truth of who you really are. Monsters start showing up pretty quickly and it terrifies you, but the more you familiarise yourself with them the less dangerous they turn out to be. Some can even be tamed (for a short while). And the more you begin to master the environment, the deeper you're able to dive, and the bigger and scarier the monsters seem to be. Until you find out how to handle them as well and the true fear of death you experienced earlier when confronting these beast steadily becomes less and less. And ever deeper it goes as it must. Until you cannot go any deeper... I won't spoil what you find there, but it might turn out that you're not too bad after all once you've uncovered the deepest truths of who you really are.

Have a great journey on Planet 4546B - I know I did for almost 100 hours on the first playthrough.

Oh, and one last note... Playing Subnautica on a screen is a nice experience. Playing it in VR is 'effing' amazing - even with the half-baked and buggy VR support. Just make sure to install the VR Enhancements on Nexus Mods.

I love this game!!!!!!
WorkWhale30 January 2018
This might actually be the best survival game ever made! There are so many reasons why I love this Game. Here's my list 1. The story: The story is great. Basically you land on this abandoned planet the has a very deadly disease on it called the Kharaa. Your goal is to get off the island without being infected. 2. The setting: This maybe one of the most beautiful game I have ever played. The water looks amazing. Don't even get me started on the way the light bounces of surfaces and the water. 3. The sound/music: OH MY GOD THIS GAMES SOUND DESIGN IS OFF THE CHART!!! Not only is the music awesome, the sounds of all the creatures are absolutely amazing. 4. The creatures: The animals are very creative. The game devs made Giant scary water monsters and also sweet creatures that you cant help but love.

If you're not sure about buying this game I would watch JackSepticEye's latest play through of it. Then you might buy it.

The Best Survival Game Ever
jakebrown-7113227 March 2020
I know that title might seem like a stretch for Minecraft fans out there but I am serious. This game is easily in my top 3 video games of all time. I'm not gonna spoil because the best part of this game is discovering what to do and how to play. PLEASE DONT SPOIL IT FOR YOURSELF. You will regret it. I watched a bunch of YouTube videos and googled everything in the beginning and I really regret it. The graphics, story, sound, gameplay, music, and overall feel of this games are just incredible. The only thing that is a bit of a problem is that it's a little bit buggy. Not much is game breaking but you probably will experience a few bugs in your play through. The last thing I have to say is how long this game is. I didn't expect it when I got this game but it can take up to 30 or 40 hours for your first play through. Get this game. Please

One of my all-time favorite games
CCP-791582 August 2020
I won't spoil it for anyone but what I will say is that this game has become one of my favorites. I've been playing this game since November 2016 when it was in early access and since I have accumulated over 100 hours. Subnautica is an immensely beautiful game with a rich and interesting lore and many extremely fun things to do such as piloting submarines or discovering new species. It may seem like a standard survival game at first, but give it a chance because it actually has a great story. I just love this game to bits.

Surprisingly incredible
adgspike24 December 2019
Warning: Spoilers
So I didn't know anything about this game when I downloaded it. I downloaded it for free because I had Xbox ultimate and was bored and let me tell you I haven't left my chair in 4 days. There's just so much to do and explore and the story is so enticing. It's almost relatable to the Minecraft phenomenon where you get addicted to it because of the insane amount there is to do. Yes I got my sea glide, but now I need the sea moth. Yes now I got the moth but need the cyclops. Yes I got the cyclops but now it needs upgrades. Yes it's upgraded but now it needs ion batteries. Yes now I have everything upgraded, what to do now? Explore the remaining 80% of the world I haven't seen and build the most epic base ever!

I'm a horror fan and love a good shock here and there and let me tell you, 20 mins in this game and you'll be getting jump-scared by fish and don't even get me started about the monsters below the deep.

Overall - can't believe I didn't play this sooner. If you're on the edge about getting this game then let me punch you over because this was some of the best gaming I've had in a long time.

A Horror game disguised as a ocean survival game
dw-305281 April 2021
First of all, this game isn't as scary as the usual horror Games nowdays but it's pretty scary. This game will force you to explore to progress the story. I had a couple of encounters with some big sea creatures and it scared me trying to avoid and run away from it. The goal of this game is to go deeper and you'll need supplies for that so exploring is 100% necessary. You build bases and explore, rinse and repeat and add some terrifying creatures then that's subnautica and That's why this game is so great. This game is very relaxing and addicting at the same time. The scenery and creatures are 10/10, and the storyline has insane lore to it.

Amazing Underwater Experience
soughtforscores12 October 2022
This is the only survival game I can stand to play except the sequel, and it's amazing. Highly recommended! It's still a tiny bit buggy even now, but the visuals, story and feel are amazing. If you have thessalaphobia, I suggest looking elsewhere besides a survival game that is played almost entirely underwater. Or if you like being scared, play it anyway. It's terrifying, beautiful, fun, and everything a game should be times 10. My only quibble is that the world is so big I have a tendency to get lost. On the other hand, I have a terrible sense of direction, so that might not be the case for everyone.

Doesn't get much better
Nob0dy16 May 2021
I rated this a 9 because nothing is perfect, things can always be improved. But this is truly a spectacular game, a silent protagonist in an ocean farming materials may not sound like much of a premise an may sound tedious, but the game is so good. The way it drip feeds you the story, how rewarding it is to get a new blueprint, the way it builds tension and atmosphere for the different biomes with impressive lighting effects, great music and amazing sound design for the wild life on the alien planet.

The only way I can try to constructively critize the game is to say there isnt enough. The creatures could do with being more varied and more diverse in their designs, there could be more vehicles/upgrades to collect and the base building could have much more added to it to make it a more fleshed out part of the game as realistically you can ignore about 85% of the things in the habitat builder menu. But that's potentially a good critcism to have, better to leave players wanting more and wanting to see what you create next rather than leaving them bored.

Subnautica: PTSD with a side of thalassophobia
johngshen7 February 2024
TLDR: Don't play if you're a weenie that's easily scared of horror games, but do play if you want a nice exploration game

Pros:
  • Really cool creature design
  • Massive map that takes a lot of time to fully explore
  • Atmospheric horror is very well done
  • Game does take quite long to beat
  • Extensively mapped out lore
  • Good, simplistic mechanics
  • Flexible gameplay
  • Leviathans are awesome

Cons:
  • Can be a bit too scary in certain aspects (Inactive Lava Zone, Void, Back of Aurora)
  • Incredibly glitchy (constant bugging with animal models)
  • Lack of updates due to support being relocated to Below Zero
  • Plot, story and how to beat the game can be difficult for newbies

Conclusion: Solid game for what it is, would recommend for fans of other open world games such as RDR2, GTA or Skyrim.
