Tierra Whack has released her new album, World Wide Whack, via Interscope Records. Stream one of our most anticipated albums of 2024 below.
Billed as her debut album, World Wide Whack follows Whack’s acclaimed 2018 project Whack World. Much like her first debut, this debut’s artsy, playful take on hip-hop comes accompanied by original images and videos. The combination of sonics and visuals fleshes out the fictional character Whack inhabits for the duration of the album, a character who’s described as “an alter ego both untouchable and vulnerable, superhuman, and painfully human.”
Whack went deeper into the project’s vulnerability in an Instagram post that she posted alongside the single “27 Club.” “I was in a dark place for a long time, and no one knew. I found my way out and made a choice to keep living,” she wrote. “I wanna be completely transparent with my ‘whackos’ because I...

Lil Yachty and Tierra Whack are two of the more inventive artists in hip-hop today — two wildly original talents who have charted their own paths without following anyone else’s trends. If you’re going to compare them to anyone, though, it might as well be each other. Both started their careers in places with rich musical histories: Yachty began rapping as a teen in the hitmaking playground of Atlanta, while Tierra sharpened her pen and earned a spot in the history of slick MCs who call Philadelphia home. Both found success suddenly,...

If you turn “Cypher” off after 10 minutes, you’d probably walk away thinking it’s yet another music documentary about a rising star looking to buy some prestige with a slickly produced, feature-length streaming commercial. Chris Moukarbel’s profile of Grammy-nominated rapper Tierra Whack begins exactly how you’d expect it to, with a whirlwind of performance clips and talking heads expressing faux befuddlement about how a girl from Philly took the rap game by storm. Whack recalls reading her rudimentary spoken word poetry in middle school cafeterias and parlaying the local hype into a rap career that earned her the endorsements of A-listers like Meek Mill on her meteoric road to stardom. Like clockwork, it quickly transitions to more intimate behind-the-scenes footage of her chilling in the studio with collaborators as she takes stock of her overwhelming fame.
But you should not, under any circumstances, abandon “Cypher” after 10 minutes.

7 November 2023 – Grammy-nominated and artistic maven Tierra Whack (Interscope Records/Universal Music Canada) is making waves with her latest single, “Chanel Pit,” which is out today on all streaming platforms. The infectious track finds the lyrically gifted Mc dishing out her trademark flavourful bars regarding her dominance over the competition on speaker-rattling production orchestrated by Nick Verruto. The official music video — directed by frequent collaborator Alex Lill — makes “Chanel Pit” a welcomed addition to Whack’s extensive catalog of experimental visuals with the multi-hyphenate putting herself — with no vehicle — through a fully functional car wash as overhead and vertical brushes clean her up while also giving her a fresh polish. The video for “Chanel Pit” will make its broadcast premiere on MTV Live, Mtvu, Yo!MTV, BET Jams, BET Hip Hop, and on the Paramount Times Square billboards.

Tierra Whack is back with a new single, “Chanel Pit,” and an accompanying music video. Stream it below.
Produced by Nick Verruto, “Chanel Pit” finds the Philly rapper and singer sprinkling a variety of references to Microsoft Excel, Resident Evil, and Vin Diesel alongside fashion designers like Rick Owens. “Mosh pit smell like Chanel” she raps on the chorus. “Yes, Microsoft, I’ma excel/ Mhm, nine, ten, eleven, fuck 12.”
In the typically whimsical visual treatment, directed by frequent collaborator Alex Lill, Whack goes through an automated car wash without actually sitting in a vehicle. Watch the video below.
Whack spoke about “Chanel Pit” in an interview with Apple Music’s Zane Lowe, during which she explained the song has been sitting around for a while. “I made it a few years ago,” she said. “I have a lot of music stacked, but it’s something about anytime I would play that song for people,...

After winning the 2023 Tribeca Festival’s Founders Award for Best U.S. Narrative Feature, the official trailer for Tierra Whack’s “Cypher” has been released.
Chronicling her meteoric rise to stardom, the documentary tells the rapper’s story after having first gained recognition at 15 years old when she was just rapping on the Philadelphia streets for a YouTube Channel. Quickly growing in viral fame, the video soon led the artist to director Chris Moukarbel, who began documenting her career, going behind the scenes of concerts and music videos. Whack also shares her thoughts on her newfound fame along the way.
“I think sometimes I just can’t believe this is all happening for me,” Whack says in the minute-long trailer.
But Whack soon realizes there’s a downside to the world knowing your name. “After a particularly tiring set, a seemingly innocuous fan interaction begins a series of increasingly unsettling...

A little while ago, we dug into the first half of the huge Fast Saga. Initially starting as a series of low-wattage B-movies, the series eventually morphed into mega-budget spy adventures that gave the Mission Impossible and James Bond franchises a run for their money. Of all the movies, Fast Five was undoubtedly the turning point, which took Vin Diesel’s Dom and the rest of the Fast Family to Rio, where they went up against a drug lord and met Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s Luke Hobbs.
From there, the series went on and on, enduring the death of beloved Fast Family member Paul Walker, a global pandemic, directors coming and going, and a feud between two of the stars that was so intense that it led to a spin-off movie and lots of hurt feelings. We also got larger-than-life villains, including Jason Statham’s Owen Shaw, who became...

It was just as well that Cypher was the only public screening I attended at this year’s Tribeca Festival that wasn’t preceded by an introduction from a member of the programming staff. Here’s a film best experienced absolutely cold. Fans of Philly rapper Tierra Whack might be in on the joke perpetrated by her co-conspirators, including director Chris Moukarbel and producer Natalia-Leigh Brown, but for those that haven’t been following along as closely, the film is a pseudo-documentary thriller that constantly morphs and shifts tone. Perhaps inspired by the line in Beyonce’s “Formation” (“y’all haters corny with that Illuminati mess”), Whack and Mourkarbel hint early on at what’s to come before shifting into a more traditional biopic documentary explaining the seemingly out-of-nowhere rise of Tierra Whack at age 15.

As part of the 2023 Tribeca Festival, David Fincher candidly discussed his career, filmmaking process and philosophy with Steven Soderbergh before a capacity crowd in the Indeed Theater at Spring Studios for an hour on Thursday evening. The two have known one another for 31 years, and have been in frequent contact for 20, showing each other rough cuts for feedback. Audience members were treated to a rare glimpse of a meeting of two great minds working in American cinema, as they occasionally revisited topics of their private conversations.
They first met when Fincher was fired – for the second time – during production of his troubled feature debut, “Alien 3.” Both were set to direct episodes in the second season of the Showtime series “Fallen Angels,” but Fincher later pulled out after “Seven” got greenlit.

Speaking about Chris Moukarbel’s “Cypher,” the jury declared that its victory was for “its kaleidoscopic use of music, created imagery and found materials, in service of an interrogation of celebrity, conspiracy culture and the nature of narrative reality itself.”
Speaking to the victory bestowed upon Guto Parente’s “A Strange Path,” the Jury commented: “In considering the International Narrative Feature Award, one film rose to the top with its surprising warmth and deeply compelling storytelling.

Plot: Dom (Vin Diesel) is forced to reckon with his actions when the psychopathic son (Jason Momoa) of a past enemy goes after him and his “family.”
Review: Fast X is meant to be either the first of a two-part finale or the beginning of a series-ending trilogy. The original plan was for two movies, but according to Diesel and much of the cast, there might still be more fuel in the tank for this long-lasting series. Having seen Fast X, the two-movie plan makes sense, but a trilogy feels like a bridge too far as, while fun, Fast X is too thinly plotted to serve as the first film in a trilogy. While no one can doubt this is an action-packed thrill ride which, thankfully, improves on the mostly disliked F9, like most films that are set up as the first half of a longer story, it’s never...

He’s the king, he’s the boss: Suga of BTS kicked off the “Agust D Tour” in style at the Ubs Arena in New York on April 26th. The first member of the South Korean group to undertake a solo tour, Suga performed cuts from his mixtapes as alter-ego Agust D, along with songs from BTS’s discography and tracks from his new full-length record, D-day (read the review here).
While Suga is hitting the US and Asia solo, he has plenty of nods to his bandmates onstage, like his guitar, which features messages and notes from the other six members of BTS. Meanwhile, in addition to his explosive and emotive solo tracks, the setlist for the concert includes a medley of tracks originally recorded and performed with fellow members of the BTS rap line, Rm and j-hope, the latter of whom recently began his time in the South Korean military.

The 22nd edition of NYC’s Tribeca Film Festival appears to have star power to spare, with Michael Shannon, John Slattery, Chelsea Peretti, David Duchovny, Jennifer Esposito, Randall Park, real-life couple Hamish Linklater and Lily Rabe and Steve Buscemi among those with new films premiering among the 100-plus features screening this year from June 7 through June 18.
A few interesting stats: There are 43 first-time directors and 29 directors returning to Tribeca with their latest projects. 41% of all feature films are directed by women and, for the first time, more than half of competition feature films are directed by women. And 39 of the feature films represented are directed by Bipoc filmmakers, including two indigenous filmmakers.
For the third year, the Tribeca Fest will include the “Expressions of Black Freedom” program, including a celebration of the 50th anniversary of hip-hop, which will highight the world premiere of “All Up in the Biz,” a documentary about hip-hop legend Biz Markie,...

Organic was co-founded in 2019 by veteran sales and production executive Steve Chicorel and Kelly Mi Li (“Bling Empire”) and now has operations in Taipei, Los Angeles, London, Riga and Brisbane. American-born Canadian director Vincenzo Natali has shown a knack for being tuned into the zeitgeist of both the sci-fi and horror scenes. His 1997 feature film debut, "Cube," preceded the "Saw" and "Escape Room" movies in pitting strangers up against sadistic traps meant to test their wits and will to live. His second film, 2002's "Cypher," has the same paranoid atmosphere and noir-meets-cyberpunk aesthetic as "Dark City," "The Matrix," and other sci-fi thrillers from around the time of its release. Even when he shifted to working more on TV, Natali found himself directing trail-blazing genre series like "Hannibal," "Orphan Black," and...

Australian actor and filmmaker Charles Jazz Terrier has completed post-production on a speculative pilot for “WTFitness,” a comedy series set in Melbourne’s gym scene.
‘WTFitness’ is proposed to be a series with eight half-hour episodes that boasts an ensemble cast including Terrier, Christopher Kirby, Kat Stewart, Jonny Brugh and Trevor Jamieson.
The show was created by Terrier of Fantome Bay Pictures and was developed in conjunction with award-winning filmmaker Nicholas Potaris. Terrier aims to create a genuine Australian workplace comedy while exploring real-world diversity, social and economic issues. He likens it to “The Office” meets “Parks & Recreation.”

Roku has acquired the This Old House business, including global distribution rights and all subsidiary brands, including the TV shows This Old House and Ask This Old House.
The deal continues to add assets to the streaming company’s Roku Channel, which doubled its scope in 2020, reaching households with 63 million people. It is primarily a destination for free, ad-supported streaming and has nearly 200 channels.
Executives declined to specify a valuation but source familiar with the deal said it would not require a regulatory filing that all transactions of $100 million and up entail.
The deal involves Roku taking over Toh Intermediate Holdings, which owns the This Old House business, from Tzp Group. The executive team of This Old House will join Roku, including CEO Dan Suratt, and the team behind the shows will continue creating programming as before, Roku said.

Roku has recruited another former employee from Quibi, the now-defunct mobile streaming subscription startup that closed its doors in 2020 just six months after launching.
Lisa Flores, previously marketing lead at Quibi, is now overseeing social media for The Roku Channel, the company’s streaming service that aggregates free, ad-supported and subscription content. She came on board earlier this month, joining the company after Roku inked a deal to acquire global rights to more than 75 original shows from Quibi, the startup headed by Jeffrey Katzenberg and Meg Whitman. Roku plans to stream the Quibi shows for free on the Roku Channel beginning sometime in 2021, but so far hasn’t provided a launch date.
In addition to Flores, several other ex-Quibians have also landed at Roku. Those include Brian Tannenbaum, who oversees unscripted content for The Roku Channel; Colin Davis, lead for The Roku Channel’s scripted content; Ryan Bocskay, business affairs...

Exclusive: The Roku Channel has a job on its hands to manage its recently acquired library of Quibi shows and has hired the shortform service’s former exec Brian Tannenbaum to help on the non-scripted side.
Deadline understands that Tannenbaum, who was a senior content executive and programming lead in the shortform streaming service’s alternative and unscripted team, has joined the technology company to head up alternative content for The Roku Channel.
Sources have told Deadline that Tannenbaum’s priority is to handle the non-scripted portion of the Quibi content, dealing with producers and talent as it plans to roll out these shows on The Roku Channel later this year.
The majority of these non-scripted shows aired on Quibi during its brief window of operation, but there were a handful that didn’t – some that were completed before it shutdown and others that hadn’t finished production. Tannenbaum will...

The Roku Channel, which entered the original programming realm this year with its acquisition of shows from failed streaming startup Quibi, has slated the premiere of action drama Cypher.
The series will have its premiere on March 19 in the U.S. and Canada. Roku emphasized that the show is a licensed program, not, in its view, a true original since it was produced elsewhere and owned by a third party during production.
Still, the Roku run will be the first appearance for the seven-episode show on any domestic platform. It will be free for viewers on the Roku Channel, the ad-supported outlet that Roku recently said has reach to households with 63 million people. The channel’s viewership has doubled over the past year.

David Ellender’s Sonar Entertainment will handle international distribution of “Interface,” an e-sports sci-fi series conceived by Australian actress and screenwriter Ellie Popov. Production in Australia and Taiwan is set to begin in the first quarter of 2021.

Popov’s Red Empire Productions developed the show. The company’s Amie Casey will produce alongside Justin Jones and Zeus Zamani’s Los Angeles-based Thriller Films, Adam Horner’s Ignite Pictures (Australia), and Steve Chicorel and Kelly Mi Li’s Taipei-based Organic Media Group. Or, at least, not a bad idea. We delve into the possibilities of making The Matrix expanded universe.
The Matrix 4 is officially in the works at Warner Bros. and Village Roadshow Pictures, with co-creator Lana Wachowski set to write, direct, and produce. In addition to Wachowski, novelists Aleksander Hemon and David Mitchell will be writing the screenplay, making the initial behind-the-scenes team for this sequel pretty damn impressive.
Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss will also reprise their roles as Neo and Trinity, respectively... um, somehow, with production slated to begin as early as "at the top of 2020," according to Variety.
While this not necessarily the Matrix Expanded Universe that we heard whispers about back in 2017, it's the start of something new for the Matrix franchise that could possibly expand into even more projects, should Warner Bros. find it valuable and the Wachowskis jump on board in some capacity.
