Gathering of friends
hof-431 May 2020
In Argentina recreo means recess, the interval between classes, a brief respite from obligations. The plot is built around three couples in their thirties. Leo and Andrea, successful architects, own the country home which is the movie's scenario and have a twelve year old son. Mariano and Lupe just have had their first child and their relationship is in crisis; she can't cope with the baby, and has left her job, while Mariano has abandoned his position in an advertising agency to strike on his own, with uncertain outcome. Finally, Nacho and Sol, the third couple, have triplets and live in a state of controlled chaos, the children requiring constant attention from both, although they seem to be able to manage. Some of the characters have been friends for a long time, predating the marriages, and they gather to enjoy a weekend of freedom from their daily problems.

The movie deals with the usual problems of couples; the onset of routine, the difficulty of intimacy in the face of work and family obligations, the change in their perception of each other than comes with years of living together. It also deals with relations between friends; old conflicts and betrayals resurface and there are new revelations which test some of the characters to their breaking point.

There have been dozens of movies on similar subjects so it's difficult to achieve originality. There are a few cliches here and there, but the balance is positive. I had a good time watching this film.
