If 2024 is the year American voters will experience a sense of déjà vu at the ballot box, it’s also likely to go down as the year that fans of indie genre cinema will feel it at the box office. From Sundance to SXSW, a surprising number of films have had fun with the concept of time, whether in terms of history literally repeating itself or presenting new angles on the same set of events.
Exec-produced by filmmaker duo Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead, and written-directed by their longtime editor Michael Felker, Things Will Be Different — as its title suggests — has an even more rarefied take, using time as a hiding place, a surreal and ingenious conceit that adds a creepy air of mystery to its otherwise solidly sci-fi scenario.

Actors Simone Ashley and Mo Gilligan sat down along with director Chris Jenkins to share some insights from their experience acting in the Sundance film 10 Lives, in their new uInterview.
10 Lives is an animated comedy that presents the charming tale of Beckett, an indulged feline character (voiced by Gilligan). When Beckett throws away his ninth life, he undergoes a transformative journey, both physically and emotionally, and ultimately discovers profound lessons about the power of love, accompanied by Rose (voiced by Ashley), a kind-hearted student who wants to save the bee population.
The voice actors reflected on the difference in approach to a voice role versus a live-action one.
“It’s so different than my work doing live-action because you’re forced to use your imagination in a much more heightened way, especially when it’s bringing a relationship with an animal to life,” Ashley told uInterview founder Erik Meers.

There’s quite a lot going on beneath the shiny, fun surface of this animated comedy, though some of the questions it deals with — animal mortality, the world’s fragile eco-system — might be too much for younger children to process. For older, smarter kids, it could be a gateway film, a way to turn young cinephiles onto Powell and Pressburger’s 1946 masterpiece A Matter of Life and Death, with which it shares a little DNA. It also, like the brace of Chicken Run movies, raises the subject of nature conservation in a way they will respond to, thanks to Bill Nighy’s deliciously machiavellian uber-villain and his killer horde of robot bees.

Co-written and directed by Christopher Jenkins (a Disney alum who counts “The Little Mermaid” and “Aladdin” among his credits), “10 Lives” makes for an entertaining and easily digestible outlier at this year’s Sundance Film Festival. The computer-animated story of a cute but lazy cat — imagine Garfield but much cuddlier — who keeps coming back in different forms, “10 Lives” is hardly the first kid-focused toon to premiere in Park City. Still, it’s probably not what most people imagine when they hear the words “Sundance movie.”
First introduced in feline form, Beckett (voiced by Mo Gilligan) is adopted by a scientist named Rose (Simone Ashley) when she nearly runs him over with her car. Rose is working on a postgraduate dissertation focusing on finding ways to save the world’s bee population. Her boss, Professor Craven (Bill Nighy), tries to sabotage her project for his own nefarious reasons. Feeling jealous...

When Simone Ashley chatted with The Hollywood Reporter at the Sundance Film Festival alongside her 10 Lives co-star Mo Gilligan and director Chris Jenkins, she revealed a hidden talent.
Ashley stars in the animated film as Rose, a student who is a doting cat mom to Beckett (voiced by Gilligan). For 10 Lives, the Bridgerton star used her natural voice, but she’s looking forward to the opportunity to show off her knack for impressions.
“I would love to do a character one day with all these different kinds of tonalities in their voice. Like Stitch. I can do a Stitch or a chipmunk impression, or like Kermit the Frog,” said Ashley, proceeding to do an accurate take on the Muppet’s voice. She then took on Stitch’s voice perfectly, impressing Jenkins and Gilligan.

It seems that every decade of the 21st century comes with its own animated film phenomenon about the importance of bee preservation. The 2000s had sincere viewings of “Bee Movie.” The 2010s had ironic viewings of “Bee Movie.” And perhaps when we look back on the 2020s, “10 Lives” will fill a similar role — though it’s considerably less likely to be uploaded on PornHub like its Jerry Seinfeld-led predecessor.
Though the marketing for Chris Jenkins’ new independently financed animated film is dominated by feline imagery, bees and their essential role in our ecosystem provide the true animal heart of the movie. But if those aren’t your thing, there’s enough anthropomorphic cats, horses, fish, rats, cockroaches, and countless other animals on hand to keep viewers of all ages entertained.
There are few better gigs in this world than being a spoiled pet onto which an owner projects their neglected parental instincts.

“10 Lives,” an animated comedy set to premiere at Sundance, tells the story of a pampered cat called Beckett (voiced by British comedian Mo Gilligan) who undergoes a series of transformations – both physical and emotional – while learning a lesson about love.
The all-star cast includes “Bridgerton’s” Simone Ashley, “Love, Actually” star Bill Nighy and One Direction heartthrob Zayn Malik in his first feature film speaking role. Malik is also credited as executive music producer, writing some new tracks for the film, including a duet with Ashley.
Ahead of its festival debut, Jenkins sat down with Variety to talk about going to Sundance, working with Malik and how he sidestepped making a “butthole cut” (featuring animated cat anuses as the controversial “Cats” movie reportedly did before eventually scrapping that version) of the movie.
How did you come onto this project?
I was brought in [by the producers]. Prior to my arrival, it was set in California.

Zayn has returned with a single entitled “Love Like This,” his first new music since 2021.
With lyrics about the uncertain-yet-exciting leap of faith one must take when they commit to a relationship, “Love Like This” is an uplifting pop bop. Mellow harmonic padding and a breakbeat-esque beat sit beneath Zayn’s vocals, as he delivers lines about how he “cannot go back” to a life without his new love. At one point, as astute One Direction fans pointed out, it’s even possible that Zayn makes a nod to his former band, as he sings: “Doesn’t matter if it’s left or it’s right, your direction is on my mind.”
“Love Like This” also comes along with a music video featuring a stoic-looking Zayn saddling his motorcycle and wistfully contemplating in the midst of a cityscape. It was directed by Ivanna Borin and Frank Borin, and filmed in New York.
