- In a mid-sized town, Scott Edinburgh, Iowan awkward young adult, is living in his mom's basement with no interest in anything in life except for pursuing Jennifer, who he wants to be his girlfriend. He has the support of his dysfunctional family and friends who try to convince him to follow their advice. His aunt wants education, his mom wants him to have therapy and his drunk uncle wants to make him famous on social media. Scott's life gets worse when he starts to see an Asian therapist that his delusional mom found by mistake when she was scrolling through her son's phone. After Scott's first therapy session the Edinburgh's planned a family dinner that gets interrupted by invitations his family made along with uninvited guests. Aunt Ev brings a potato salad filled with onions that Bev hates and Bev makes a bean casserole. A security officer Dan Wyatt shows up from the therapist office who follows Linn everywhere she goes, and Jennifer is revealed as Dan's sister. Everyone except for the professor, Ev and Bev eat the bean casserole that Bev makes and she mistakenly adds a laxative making chaos ensue. To top it all off, the young sister (Linn) from the therapy office fooled the Edinburgh's pretending to be a real therapist. After the dinner, Scott is sprawled out on the living room as Yin Yin the real therapist enters leading to the discovery by the Professor and aunt Ev that Yin Yin is not an emotional support therapist that Scott's mom booked but a trained sex therapist. Uncle Jeb starts to date Yin Yin, Ev disowns Jeb and Bev cancels therapy for Scott and soon after the Edinburgh family spins out of control to the point of no return.
