So much better than anticipated
TheLittleSongbird17 November 2023
The Walking Dead' "Who Are You Now" (2018)

Opening thoughts: Actually was incredibly impressed by all the previous Season 9 episodes and Season 9 on the whole improved massively on the previous two seasons easily. Then again, the season would have had to be really bad to be on par or worse than the worst of the pretty poor Season 8. Expectations were not quite as high for "Who are You Now?", due to really not being sure how 'The Walking Dead' would fare without Rick (pretty much the anchor of the show) and whether it would feel too different after his departure. "Who are You Now?" actually was so much better than anticipated, seeing as quality in general in most shows tends to be nowhere near the same in a not so good way when a great main character departs, and was pretty excellent.

Bad things: Starts a little slow and unsettled, though this is understandable considering the change.

Good things: Everything else. Very stylish and atmospheric production values. With no signs of self indulgent gimmicks or showing off. Very atmospheric music in a haunting and ominous if never over obvious way, while also having emotion that is not spelled out. Thrilling, suspense laden and well choreographed action with nothing coming over as ridiculous or chaotic. The viewer is also introduced to the new antagonists the Whispers and already they show potential and make their unsettling presence known.

The massive improvement in the writing continues here too. Hardly any extraneous talk, long winded-ness and soap-opera, apart from some long winded-ness early on but even that was done far worse in Seasons 7 and 8. Instead the scripting is tight and thoughtful on the whole, treating the characters and the viewer with respect. The story absorbs throughout, even when not fast paced it never felt dull and nothing for me felt confusing or over silly, and there is even some nice tension.

Characters are treated with respect and don't make ridiculous or confused decisions that frustrated so much in most of Season 8. The acting is great, the absence of Rick doesn't leave as much of a big hole as feared.

Concluding thoughts: Another great episode.

9/10.

the walking dead without rick ?? wtf a great introductory episode for the new beginning and the lack of rick
MomentIMDB2 October 2019
Warning: Spoilers
After Rick's departure, the series jumped six years and brought many changes. Although Rick was my favorite characters, I'm still interested and Angela Kang can keep the series without Rick. The episode introduces us to the group of Magna and the advances of Alexandria and the Kingdom for 6 years. Good points: I love the development of characters and their change after the loss of Rick, all the characters became more interesting. Henry liked me quite a bit in the episode and stopped being the annoying child and showed himself to be smarter. The relationship between Carol and Ezekiel. Negan and Judith's relationship. Magna and her group. bad points: we didn't see hiltop and the pace was a bit slower than the previous episodes

The Whisperers are almost here.

Warning: Spoilers
Good episode; Carol being a badass and making sure some of the members of the Sanctuary aren't a threat no longer, didn't expect Rosita and Gabriel to be together, love the new group, Rosita and Eugene being hunted down by the Whisperers which is going to be amazing in the next episode. The dialogue, the development of the characters and the interaction between Judith and Negan was good too.

I'm very excited for the Mid-Season Finale and looking forward to what the Whisperers are going to do and how they are ALL going to be introduced to the other groups.

TWD is Back!
colinw-8434412 November 2018
Warning: Spoilers
Like the walkers themselves it seems that TWD died and came back, arguably better than ever.

9x06 had some of the best moments in all of season nine, and in my opinion, the last few seasons in general. Angela Kang (the new showrunner) is absolutely killing it! Between the awesome Whisperer reveal, the arrival of Magnas group, and Carols BADASS killing spree I can't help but find myself actually looking forward to the next episode more and more again.

In short, The Walking Dead is back baby!

How great is this Dialogue?

Warning: Spoilers
Another very good episode.

it's been years since TWD was this consistently good. the writing, pacing, the cinematography, just everything is much better compared to the last 2 seasons, the story just keeps moving forward with no filler or characters making questionable decisions and it feels fresh and new I'm really loving the direction of the show, I find it really funny how the Saviors storyline finally ended with Carol just burning them, just the cherry on top of things great about this episode and of things to come , I'm really looking forward to the Whisperers the ending of the episode was actually really creepy.

These last 6 episodes have been amazing! During the summer I was doubting the walking dead could survive without Rick Grimes but I was wrong. With wonderful characters, good story and good writing the show lives on. I can't wait to see what happens next.

Ignore the trolls

Warning: Spoilers
Ignore the trolls giving the episodes of this season a 1. They aren't true fans of the show . This episode takes place several years after the supposed death of Rick Grimes and lets just say you need to keep an open mind because things are a bit different !

it's neither 1/10 nor 10/10
belanglos112 November 2018
This shows' strengths are mostly the good main actors and the cinematography and it always lacked in writing. E.g. someone walking backwards into a room, or people holding a huge 10t log with 3 people.

This episode is pretty good for a Walking Dead episode. If you managed to watch this far, you will probably enjoy it. Although a lot of the story feels artificial it is watchable.

You (all of you!!! :-p) should stop with the 1/10 and 10/10 ratings, just because a show is rated too poorly or too good in your opinion. just let the masses speak. that does not diminish your opinion of a show. Just rate it as you would.

Yes, "The "Walking Dead" has its' cheesy moments, but it's still watchable and enjoyable.

It's getting too PC
asimov7245516 November 2018
There may be a better television program but I don't know what it is. The Walking Dead is the only program for which I regularly set aside a hour to watch. BUT enough of the politically correct crap already. The maximum number of same sex relationships and mixed marriages peaked out many episodes ago. Too many and it seems contrived. I don't really mind having a gun-slinging 11-year-old girl as the alpha male but the introduction of individuals with handicaps which would have ensured their being converted to zombie chow in a real survival situation strains my ability to suspend disbelief. Survival depends on an individual's ability to meet the demands of the emergency plus successfully compete against others for resources. A deaf or blind or unintelligent person would be the rarest of endangered species a dozen years into an end-of-the-world scenario. Please don't let PC pandering override good sense story telling.

Excited for what's to come
longjohndoherty12 November 2018
In the first episode of the post Rick Grimes world TWD starts things off in the right path reeling me in for what's next. Some fans may feel weird without Rick but me personally this feels like a brand new show and that's a good thing.

The episode would've been great had we not been subjected to annoying Judith. Terrible giving Chandler/Carl's comic story line to Judith

Who are these people?
thia123428 December 2022
In what world do a bunch of battle hardened apocalypse survivors suddenly start being bossed around by children? I HATE this theme which pops up all too often these days. Why are you goofballs worshipping youth and naïveté instead of age, wisdom, and experience? Children are incredibly stupid, lack the ability to see around corners or predict consequences, and have NO judgement at all. Do these writers know any children? God bless their little hearts but they shouldn't be trusted to run lemonade stands without supervision. It's absurd and incredibly annoying to keep shoving this into otherwise character realistic shows.

Now we are also to believe that hearing impaired people have survived? It's like a woke box checking exercise for the new characters. Why MUST YOU DO THIS? It's so clumsy and stupid. It jerks the viewer completely out of the show and just screams virtue signaling. Can't you writers at least be more clever and subtle? Bring them in one at a time at least or in separate groups. And the pitifully lacking acting ability... don't get me started. Go back and watch Michonne and Daryl in the previous episode. THAT'S how it's done kids.

Is this a new show? Because i'm loving it!
ricardo_sousa_1112 November 2018
Warning: Spoilers
Ok, I'll keep it short, i LOVED this episode, it felt like the show i fell in love in season 1. Great dialogue, it felt like real people talking not that phylosophic sh** Gimple used to write. The Camera angles/cuts were very good, the episode itself had a great pace aswell!

+Highs+

Cailey Fleming steals the show, what a great young actress, i held my tears when she told Michonne she's starting to forget Rick and Carl's voices. Her scenes with Negan were great aswell and that final attempt of her trying to do sign language had me laughing for a bit!

Magna's group was actually really great too, that 'small' scene of them inside they're temporary home was really cool, they have great chemistry! I also should say Magna seems really interesting to me specially because she's played my Nadia Hilker (who i know from The 100) who's a great actress!

-Lows-

I don't know how I feel about Rosita and Gabriel's relationship, I feel like Christian Serratos and Josh McDermitt have way better chemistry and would make more sense for their characters to be together.

That's it, that's my "short" review. Also, THANK YOU ANGELA KANG FOR SAVING MY SHOW.

WHERE ARE THEY?
Splarke2212 November 2018
BOOM. The Walking Dead has returned with an explosive episode marking the true start of a new beginning on the show. So much has changed! Many new relationships have formed, Magna's group has been introduced, & the Whisperers have arrived.. TWD's future is looking bright, even without Rick Grimes around (something I never thought I'd be saying). So excited for the last 2 episodes of 2018!

Excellent episode!
ohmap-977-66481012 November 2018
Warning: Spoilers
I did not comment on last week's episode because I just barely saw it tonight, but DAMN it was a ten point zero! That was the best episode I saw in years!

There was plenty of zombie action in this one. I admired the newest little maverick who showed she was daddy's little girl by rescuing some people from a zombie attack.

I must say Carol is in form. She dispatched some really nasty saviors in a unique way. She probably taught her son a lesson as well. When you are outnumbered, don't be stupid fight back at that point; wait until after dark and set them on fire when they are asleep! She is same lady as the one who told the little girl to just keep looking at the flowers. Don't mess with Carol!

The storyline was really good in this one and brought home personal feelings for me. I found it very sad when Judith said she was forgetting the sound of her dad's and brother's voices. It is sad, but after years, I understand what she is talking about.

The show is much better written and acted this season versus season eight. So far I have not seen one bad show that I would give under a 7 or 8. Even the zombie attacks are better!

So What Did We Learn Tonight?
sevenlilxenos12 November 2018
Warning: Spoilers
If you kill off too many of your interesting characters you will lose viewers. Time jumps help you avoid dealing with the immediate effect of losing one of them.

Carol's hair is always either too short or too long. Eugene's ponytail looks very fake and he will die a virgin. Negan's skin head look is very fitting.

Daryl is quite content with being a loner who apparently has no interest in having a sexual relationship with anyone. Most of the others don't have this problem.

Little kids grow up really fast in the ZA. Its tough going thru your teenage angst period when you are a son of a king.

Some chicks rock tats way better than others. Prison shanks are fun to hide.

Some people have to talk more than they usually do when they are HNIC even if most of the talking is to themselves. TWD is running out of PCs to include.

Negan would have been a better father to Judith than Shane or Rick and would have given her a much smaller gun, which she could hold and shoot accurately.

Paybacks are a b/tch. Makes you wonder if Carol sees her abusive former husband Ed in every dude that does her wrong. Gas can be useful even without a car.

According to Dr. Jenner in season 1 (TS-19) when Walkers reanimate, the part of their brain for thought and reasoning (ie to form coherent speech) does not come back. So no Walker should be talking or whispering.

7/10 (room for improvement)

YAY!!! No More Gick Grimes
thebrain5819 March 2023
I understand Rick was a/the central character to the entire story, but I for one am 100% glad he is gone. One of the worst, most boring actors on the show who in all fairness was constantly being given long preachy boring monologues and totally unbelievable and unrealistic dialogue. While there is still plenty of bad acting left, I will absolutely not miss Rick. Though I do hope the helicopter people are explained at some time.

Meanwhile there has been a slight reduction in the formulaic scenes of; someone / some group does something incredibly stupid they end up in apparent mortal danger a last second miracle saves them all

If the writers can resist the temptation to insult their viewers intelligence I will look forward to seeing the rest of this show which at it's best can be very entertaining.

WHERE ARE THEY!
davisond-7038112 November 2018
Warning: Spoilers
Episode 6 takes place about 5 years after episode 5 and its once again refreshing. I dont think the walking dead has ever managed to have 6 episodes straight were it has been really good.

Eugene now kills walkers, Carol and Ezekiel are married, Henry is not annoying, Magna and the new group are badass, Negan is now a nice guy, a Richonne baby happened, Gabe and Rosita are now a couple, Daryl is living in the woods, Judith is a badass and the whisperers have been introduced.

The ending was the best part, Eugene and Rosita cover themselves in mud and hide in fear as talking walkers go by only they aint all walkers and this show feels like its gunna be scary.

Oh, and I forgot Carol going savage on the saviours, this show isnt messing around.
