A nice easy watch for lovers of magic
thenextrushmagazine8 February 2020
Short season with something happening each episode, this is the first out of a series of attempts on several Italian originals on Netflix and stands out. Great cinematography, just as impactful in English and Italian and that climatic season finale was a great pay off.

Surprising!
exorcizamus-943661 February 2020
I sincerely was positively surprised by this show, all due to the conclusion. The only thing that bothered me was the choice of the soundtrack, except for the opening and closing music, many of the other melodies did not harmonize with the scenes and destabilized the moment. An interesting experience and decent plots.

Touch and go but a good story
sjorr7810 February 2020
This has a lot of promise still and I hope to see it grow further. The pace and focus of the story could use help sometimes. It didn't pick up proper and consistent until the last episode.

What's with the awful music choice?
cristi-411033 February 2020
I am not sure how I feel about this series yet. So far I'm not a fan. For several reasons: 1. Italian actors that seem trained in theater and not film acting is a shame. There are insanely talented actors in Italy to have chosen this particular groups actors. 2. Music that was composed for this is very restricted in vision and therefore doesn't make any sense when watching. The emotions it tries to generate are not matched with what is happening at all. Instead of generating suspense or hope or mystery it's sooo melodic and peppy it takes away from the point of the scene. 3. Some music has lyrics in English which throw me off as I am watching in original language set several centuries ago, yet I have to hear upbeat music from the 21st century. Who thought this was a good idea? Seriously though! 4. Story so far is kind of dull. Some female is accused of witchcraft, but some educated male who believes in science and not ignorant ideas may save the day. Not interesting enough of a story. It could just be the slowness of it. The lack of interesting character building and transitions from scene to scene. I see there are reviews saying how did this get bad rating...and I ask...how did this get good rating?

Huh?
sYneStra7137 February 2020
Do any of the writers actually know how to tell a story and keep it consistent? This had such promise, but it is all over the place and back and forth and back again. Whaaaat? I can't even figure out what to point out. Beautiful costumes, great settings... but it feels like there was no real consistencies, nothing made sense. Perhaps they were trying to work on surprising people, which, it was surpising at times, but so hodge podge it made it ridiculous.

Luna Nera
excavator13 February 2020
If witchcraft is your thing, you might want to check out Luna Nera. It's not perfect, but it has a lot going for it as well. The athmosphere is authentic, you can relate to the characters and obviously italian is a beautiful language to listen to. Main points of criticism for me were sound and sound editing and the fact that it's an open ending. Some of the writing could be better as wel, but all in all I enjoyed watching this show.

Screenwriter? Are you doing ok?
licciardellomelissa5 February 2020
Ok, so, first of all I have to specify that my mother tongue is Italian, so I had the pleasure to watch the TV serie in Italian. I don't want to complain about the acting: more experienced actresses made the lines and the overall plot work, even if they were quite surreal. But I really didn't like the plot flow, the characters study was so poor that I simply couldn't believe what was going on there. I couldn't emphasize with both the main characters because, in my perspective, they were really acting randomly. And I'm really sad about this, I really wanted to enjoy it, above all because there aren't a lot of Italian fantasy TV series.

Fantastic..totally consistent and easy to follow.
Dreadlock-Soldier22 February 2020
No idea what problems some reviewers have with consistency, acting and plot. This was amazing. Strong characters, emotional, developing story, witchcraft, feminism and medieval ideas all well established throughout.

I felt the pain and anguish of the lead character and had a powerful response to the injustices of the past.

Amazing.

Suggestion
chrissab-138102 February 2020
I'm enjoy this series but the producers should do better research about the tome period because portraits were not yet invented in the 17th century. The first daguerrotype portrait was un 1839.

So disappointed
yvonnetlawson3 February 2020
They had a good story, but it dragged on and there were no scenes that brought out the real emotions. The battle scenes were short and unsatisfying. The love scenes never gave in to it. Ade's confusion is not justified for at least the second half of the series, nor is her anger in the last episode. The whole series felt flat.

Totally Recommended

Warning: Spoilers
The beginning of the series is totally captivating, with mysterious and interesting characters, good clothes and places, really portraits what women had to go through just because they were women. The opening and ending songs are great, unlike the music used in the series that is very out of context. (that's why an 8, it really bothered me) I loved the characters and although there are very hurried and slow parts it makes sense in the context of it. SPOILERS Ade falling in love so quickly and hopelessly is a bit weird, but maybe at that time it was like that as well as the excuse of getting married without knowing each other, it is obvious that time passed bweteen scenes but they should have shown it to us. The end was totally unexpected, I am very anxious to see what will become of Ade and this power, where will it take her, will she be left alone? will he return with the sisters? What will happen with Cesaria? Can't wait for Season 2.

Entertaining but also silly
soph_ia17 October 2021
Warning: Spoilers
This is an entertaining show for the most part, especially if you're into period dramas and fantasy. It has an interesting concept with a lot of potential, which I sadly thought was wasted.

First of all, the magic stuff. It is sort of established that each of them has her unique set of powers, but they also don't show what is the extent of their power. It's not explained what they can and cannot do. When it's fitting for the story they're powerful and when it's not, they suddenly seem to have no power. Persepolis is shown to have the power to move things around and break mirrors, but she only ever seems to use these powers at the witch house. One of the witches introduced later, Petra, was inprisoned by being buried in rocks, but later it's shown she has the power to transform rocks (and even her name means rock in Greek) which makes you wonder, why didn't she just will those rocks into releasing her?

Then, the romance between Pietro and Ade seems forced. They've only interacted twice, known each other for like 2 days and they're madly in love with each other. Now, that is something that kinda happens in courtly love stories, but still. I wasn't sold in their romance. Also, Pietro is kinda a dick. I don't remember which episode it was where he discovers the Perfect Way to put a stop to Ade being chased: them getting married. He gets all petty when she doesn't immediately say yes, telling her other women are lining up to marry him etc.

Another thing which didn't make much sense was how Pietro's father, the leader of the witch hunters, who is so adamantly against magic, suddenly has no issue with Marzio bewitching their weapons and telling him he can bring his wife from the death. It just didn't make any sense for me. When you establish a character to be a devout Christian who wants to chase down all witchcraft, you can't have him so easily trust someone who quite literally performs magic in front of him. If anything, that sword that Cesaria used to break the ground seemed more evil and satanic than any of the magic performed by the women in front of him.

The final episode was the silliest.

Valente, the little brother, turns out to be a girl and the Chosen One. I found it super corny and silly how the witches managed to do a complete dress up with themed outfits and gather around the lake by the time Ade and Leptis reach them. Ade's sudden turn to the dark side also didn't make any sense. It would be understandable for her to be all "wtf" about her brother actually being a sister and the Chosen One, but showing her being jealous and running away didn't. Ade didn't seem to be interested in being the chosen one up until this point and she loved her brother dearly, so it just didn't make sense. It would have made more sense for someone like Cesaria to be jealous.

Pietro turning evil also didn't make any sense. I would understand him hating Ade for killing his father, but she did it because he was choking her brother/sister to death. For the entirety of the show Pietro didn't agree with his father and especially him wanting to kill people for witchcraft. So it'd make sense for him to be sad about him dying, but not so quick to become a witch Hunter himself. It would have been better if his turn to the dark side was explored in the second season, but I suppose they thought it'd be more suspenseful this way.

Also, Spirto suddenly becoming loyal to the Benendanti didn't make any sense either. He seemed pretty Done with them when they beat him up and tied him at the town square, so it didn't make sense that he suddenly renounced Persepolis and joined them.

Could have been really really good.
c_orring3 February 2020
This show had loads of potential. However it lacks well.. a lot. Many of the main actors (Ada hmph) have problems with displaying emotions. Then there are the many stupid decisions made repeatedly in the plot.. I had to turn it off several times out of annoyance. Really liked it in the beginning but I can't finish it.

A Few Complaints, But I Didn't Hate It
ViewFromGolgotha23 May 2020
Warning: Spoilers
More often than not I am not a fan of shows dealing with magic and wizardry especially when it comes to magical battles because I never feel like it is explained very well how one magician defeats another. If one knows a spell that can cause instant death why use anything else during a battle? But the magic was used pretty effectively in this series so far. Could have used a few scenes showing more of a population, I think. The Benandanti was supposed to be protecting the city, their people, from these witches but the world seemed a little too small in numbers to me. I have found that I prefer watching a series in its original language and reading subtitles so I definitely recommend that here. Feels and sounds much better to me. I understand that this series is taking place during a time when women weren't treated with much equality, but I found it a little puzzling that the Benandanti were getting aid from a very powerful warlock to hunt down these witches and put them to death for witchcraft(?) and no one questioned it whatsoever. Not sure I really understood Pietro taking up his father's mantle the way that it happened either, but despite all of my complaints I didn't have a difficult time watching the six episodes of the first season in one sitting and am curious how the writers will proceed with the story.

A complete mess
bluefyre-2870411 February 2020
This show was such a mess to watch. The characters thought processes and decision making felt out of place and very random, because of this it makes it hard to connect to the characters as their motivations don't make sense. It touched on a lot of themes like feminism, misogyny, religion vs science, the relationship between life and death, but it never really delved further with that. Its like the writers chose to let these interesting themes fade into the background to focus on the ridiculous relationship between Ade and Pietro. This pairing has a complete lack of chemistry and no relationship development at all relying only on the idea of love at first sight making me cringe at every scene where they attempted to show affection. I really wanted to like this show but the screenwriting makes it incredibly hard to watch all 6 episodes and I was left feeling disappointed and irritated. Wasn't worth my time.

Give it a chance
enrico-delorenzi23 February 2020
The show is a crescendo. The first episodes may not fully convince, but above all the last two are well made and have excellent cliffhangers. I'm sure that non-Italian-speaking viewers will appreciate it much more.

Incredibly Well Done and Beautifully Acted Story!
skip-987565 February 2020
Wow! I must say I am impressed and more than slightly blown away! Having just come off watching Sabrina, This witch story is Nothing like it..Both have their niche, but ohh man, this was just a beautiful story of magic, love and gothic power...While Sabrina is kooky, intense, satirical and wayy out there, This story is much much more realistic, grounded yet wildly beautiful in how the witches and their power is portrayed...It is more like A Discovery of Witches than Sabrina..If you like to see magic, witchcraft displayed in ways that seem believable ,yet intense ,captivating and awe inspiring then this show is for you! I watched it dubbed in english and the dubbing and voice acting was superb for all actors in it..I could forget it was dubbed,it was that good! One thing that prevented me from giving this fantastic series a 10 was the use or should I say "misuse" of the soundtrack..It seemed AT Times, very out of place ,not in keeping with the intent and theme of the story and it tended to pull one Out of the moment rather than draw you IN, which Should be the intent of a good soundtrack..It should Enhance not detract from the story...That said, its only a few odd times that this occurs, mostly ,its fine...This is an outstanding foreign effort that draws you immediately into its rich, scary, dark, and beautiful story which has a romance growing at the same time..I loved it and want more seasons ,especially after the cliffhanger!

Really enjoyed this series
animeprincess45 March 2020
Ok so first... I watched this in Italian with English subtitles.. Trust me it makes a difference... As for the story.. I thought it held up.. Yes there are some "soap opera" type scenes, but I felt the storyline kept it moving... I really enjoyed this series...initially I began to get annoyed with Ades' reluctance to accept who she is, but I thought the story was interesting and kept me coming back to see what happens next... I really hope it gets renewed for a second season.. Check it out

Nothing really special about it
eremare3 February 2020
Warning: Spoilers
The plotline was okey after all with a nice twist in the end, but other than that nothing special about it. I thing that it lacks of energy. The love scenes has no emotion, the battle scenes were short and childlish. In the second half of the first season it felt like certain scenes were repeated to fill the 40-minutes episodes. They could use this time to make Ade's confusion and her anger to make scenes, or to give the opportunity to some secondary characters to grow.

'Luna Nera' or 'Black Moon'
yusufpiskin31 January 2020
Netflix's 'Luna Nera' or 'Black Moon' follows a young woman Ade, who is left with two choices after her Grandma brutal execution - leave the town and embrace her otherworldly powers or pursue a forbidden love story with her boyfriend, Pietro. 'Luna Nera' has been directed by a trio of three powerful women - Francesca Comencini ('Pianoforte'), Susanna Nicchiarelli ('Nicc, 1988') and Paola Randi ('Into Paradiso'), while Francesca Manieri ('The First King'), Laura Paolucci ('Quiet Chaos') and Tiziana Triana serve as the creators.
