- BBC plot: Hannah arrives at Buckingham Palace, but is too late to be presented. Samuel meets two men who are interested in his invention, Denning and Mr Field. He learns that they are from MI5 and he is sworn to secrecy. The Petrukhins attend a fete at the Shaw's. Samuel invites Kathleen to attend the demonstration of the staff locator, but does not tell her it is for MI5. He demonstrates the staff locator at the military base with Courtney and Doreen from the factory, as well as Miriam, Hannah, Sacha and Kathleen in attendance. During the demonstration, Kathleen leaves suddenly in tears and Hannah runs after her. Kathleen confides in Hannah that her son Anthony went missing five years ago when he was aged 21. Kathleen goes to see Mr Spearman, a private investigator, but there have been no new developments in Anthony's case. Hannah befriends Esther, a young deaf woman who works at Samuel's factory. Hannah's etiquette teacher Nicholas persuades Hannah to take part in a civil defence exercise to prepare for nuclear attacks.
- Samuel finally gets to meet the mystery men at a cover address, promised a major government order if he passes discretion tests, which he succeeds despite(?) claiming all governments are incompetent. It's MI5, but the vital order to turn his staff locator into a success rather then a drain which may bankrupt his company is made dependent on his promise to spy on MP Richard Shaw, whose wife Kathlee eagerly invites the whole Petrushkin family to all their events, especially in the lavish garden. It's a rare treat for Sasha, who spends a grim time at boarding school, where the brush whacks any apparent imp. His sister Hannah achieves dubious fame, which she hides at home, by being the only debutante making a spectacle of herself by arriving seconds too late to be presented at court, but thus enters the party circuit, only she prefers her poet teacher from finishing school Nicolas Halliday, who gets her interested in nuclear alert exercises, where she misbehaves again. Kathleen confides in her she's still desperately working along a PI to search for her adult son Anthony, who disappeared without a clue five years ago.—KGF Vissers
