The presence of Movistar Plus+, Spain’s biggest pay-tv/SVOD operator, is hard to ignore at this year’s San Sebastian film festival, with two original TV series and one feature film helmed by the streamer scattered throughout the program. The Telefonica-owned platform also had a hand in every Spanish feature in the festival’s Official Selection. Domingo Corral, director of original fiction at Movistar Plus+, caught up with Deadline at San Sebastian to discuss the company’s drive into original production, the current boom in local Spanish productions, and how he competes with global streamers like Netflix and HBO.
Deadline: Domingo, how’s business?
Domingo Corral: We are in very good shape. We are presenting two shows here in San Sebastian: Fácil and Offworld, which is part of the Official Section. It’s the only show that’s part of the festival’s Official Selection. And...

The six-hour series about human trafficking went to German-French broadcasting group Zdf/Arte, which is also on board as co-producer.

Produced by Croatian broadcaster Hrt and Zagreb-based Drugi Plan in co-production with Beta Film, Russia’s Star Media, Ukraine’s Oll.TV and Zdf/Arte, “The Silence” is based on the critically acclaimed fact-based books by investigative journalist Drago Hedl that examine human and weapons trafficking throughout Eastern Europe.

The premiere of Serbian drama series “Bad Blood” Wednesday night at the Sarajevo Film Festival was more than just the usual red-carpet event. An ambitious, decades-spanning period drama that chronicles the waning years of the Ottoman Empire, it was the first series from the festival’s CineLink Drama co-financing forum to go into production since its launch in 2016.
“We have now closed the full circle for TV series in the festival,” says Sarajevo’s long-time industry head Jovan Marjanović, who recently became the festival’s co-director alongside founder and director Mirsad Purivatra.
Five years after Sarajevo added a TV strand to its CineLink industry platform, drama has become an ever-larger part of the festival’s program. In addition to CineLink Drama, the co-production market which presents six high-end drama series in development from Southeastern Europe, there’s Avant Premiere, which this week introduced “Bad Blood” and four other anticipated Balkan...

In the 15 years since its founding, Star Media has grown into an international media group and distribution powerhouse, with a catalog boasting more than 7,500 hours of content available in more than 60 countries worldwide. But the company remains true to its roots as a production house, and its focus is still on the production of high-end content with an emphasis on series that boast both local and international appeal, according to Star Media president Vlad Riashyn.
The company’s portfolio of local content includes more than 65 series and feature films. Currently in production is a Russian-language adaptation of the hit Israeli crime drama “Kvodo,” whose American remake, “Your Honor,” starring Bryan Cranston, aired on Showtime. The series follows a powerful judge whose son kills a motorcyclist in a hit-and-run accident. We knew that The CW was going to pull out all the stops for “Crisis on Infinite Earths” and yet, the sheer number of cameos and surprise appearances still managed to elicit gasps and generate shockwaves online.
But perhaps the most unexpected and wild addition was the Dceu’s Barry Allen, portrayed by Ezra Miller. After all, the Arrowverse and DC’s cinematic franchise have no continuity with each other whatsoever. So, it was utterly surreal to see Grant Gustin’s Scarlet Speedster next to the alternate version from the big screen. Does this mean that a future crossover with the two universes is a possibility, though? Well, the cameo has certainly got people talking and speculating, so it wouldn’t be much of a stretch.
And it seems that The Flash showrunner Eric Wallace is also interested in a future reoccurrence. The producer recently talked about how great it...

On April 2nd, young actor Logan Williams died at the age of 16, just a few days ahead of his 17th birthday on April 9th. Williams was best known for playing Barry Allen in flashbacks to the hero’s preteen years on The CW’s The Flash, appearing eight times across seasons 1 and 2. His other credits include Supernatural and When Calls the Heart.
His family had refrained from revealing the reason for his tragic death before now, but in an interview with The New York Post published this Friday, his mother Marlyse Williams explained that toxicology reports confirmed that it was due to a fentanyl overdose, following her son’s three-year-long struggle with opioid addiction. Williams hopes that by talking openly about Logan’s troubles, she can raise awareness and prevent others from going through the same thing she did.
“His death is not going to be in vain,” Marlyse said.

The Flash season 6 only just wrapped up this past Tuesday, but we’ve already got a synopsis for the seventh season of the Scarlet Speedster’s show. Yesterday (May 14th), The CW revealed their schedule for the 2020/2021 television year, which made clear that the network’s original programming will be held off until next January as a result of the pandemic. We’ve got a long while to wait until we return to Central City, then, but at least this description promises that it should be worth it.
Season 6’s finale, “Success is Assured,” left things on a downbeat note as Barry Allen and friends were unable to prevent Eva McCulloch’s schemes from coming to fruition. Obviously, they would have defeated her in the original last few episodes of the season though, so you’d expect this to play out at the beginning of season 7.
Sure enough, this synopsis...

2020 is the darkest timeline, which is why The Flash season finale came three episodes earlier than it was supposed to, with little to no idea of when the show will return to finish the story, or tell any others. This is especially unfortunate given the fact that The Flash Season 6 has been one of the strongest overall outings of the show in recent years. It’s introduced not one, but two intriguing and complex new villains. It brought on one of the most long-awaited characters in series history. It remembered it had female characters, and gave them stories accordingly. Almost every major player had something significant to do this year, and the entire show seemed to radiate a new energy and sense of purpose.
Naturally, this is also the year that a global pandemic would shut down production.

The Flash season 6 is wrapping up in just two weeks’ time. Yep, that will mark only its nineteenth episode, but that’s the way it has to go, given that the Covid-19 pandemic has shut down production. Thankfully, it sounds like episode 6×19 “Success is Assured” will be a pretty fitting place to end the run, as it’ll see Barry’s efforts to save wife Iris from the Mirrorverse come to a head. But is the title giving away the ending, or will there be a twist in the tale?
In the last couple of episodes, Barry finally realized the terrible truth – that he’s been living with an evil mirror copy of his wife for the past few months – and attempted to free the real Iris. Unfortunately, it didn’t work and Eva McCulloch Aka the new Mirror Master escaped her confines instead. That means Iris, as well as...

Berlin — Underscoring its ambitions for Central and Eastern Europe, “Babylon Berlin” and “Gomorrah’s” Beta Film has just taken a majority stake in Zagreb-based Drugi Plan, producers of Netflix pick-up “The Paper” and “Success,” HBO Europe’s first HBO Adria original.

It boasts one of the fastest-growing TV industries on the planet, but that hasn’t cleared up misconceptions when it comes to Central and Eastern Europe. “I would like to kill some stereotypes about the region,” said Kamila Zlatušková, founder of the Serial Killer TV Festival in Brno, Czech Republic, during a showcase of regional series at the Berlinale Series Market on Tuesday.
Zlatušková said that her travels around TV festivals and markets in recent years had led her to believe that she was living in “an invisible region. There were no panels, no topics from Central and Eastern European drama.”
After years of working in the industry, including at a regional pubcaster, Zlatušková launched the Serial Killer TV Festival to change that. The week-long event, which this year takes place from Sept. 22-27, offers a platform for rising talents and hot new series to get exposure to industry players from across the globe.

Variety has been given exclusive access to the trailer for Serbian director Srdan Golubović’s “Otac” (Father), which premieres in the Panorama section of the Berlin Film Festival.
“Father” is the story of an impoverished day laborer whose children are taken by social services after the family’s difficult circumstances drive his wife to commit a desperate act. Unable to get a fair hearing from the corrupt administrator in his provincial town, he decides to travel across Serbia on foot to take his case directly to the ministry in Belgrade.
Pic was written by Golubović and Ognjen Sviličić, and lensed by Golubović’s long-time cinematographer Aleksandar Ilič. It stars the veteran Bosnian actor Goran Bogdan, whose international TV credits include FX’s “Fargo” and HBO’s “Success.”
For his fourth feature, Golubović was inspired by the real-life story of a man whose incredible journey he first encountered on social media.

The Intl. Casting Directors Network (Icdn) and the Sarajevo Film Festival are joining forces to turn the popular Bosnian film fest into a springboard for regional actors looking to launch international careers.
After kicking off with a pilot version last year, the initiative expanded to include a series of masterclasses with leading casting directors and a range of programs intended to boost exposure for the emerging talents. The Icdn’s Timka Grin says the platform will not only build a bridge between foreign casting directors and new talent from the region, but offer valuable skills for actors not used to the Western method of casting.
