Songs take on a new meaning
sand-457261 June 2019
This movie really gave insight to the lyrics to the songs sang by Elton John I was appalled by how cruel his parents were. He's a true artist and genius when it comes to his music. What a true talent. Enjoyed the music and insight. He deserves every happiness

Hate musicals... loved this!
forza_la_viola30 May 2019
Agreed to see this movie not knowing that it was tagged as a musical - it was probably the least 'musical' musical I've ever seen with only about 20 minutes of the 2 hours containing singing. I wouldn't say that I'm the biggest Elton John fan to be honest, but the way this film was set out - and acted - left me absolutely speechless. It's an absolute triumph, and Taron Egerton is world class... that bot is going to go far!

Brilliant artistry!
joedaniels920 September 2019
What a brilliant film. The artistry and the interpretation of a man, that I had no idea lived a such dramatic life, was interpreted in such a magnificent way.

You're posting reviews for a music video, but think you're posting for the 2019 film. How obtuse can you be? The 1 star is for the site reviewers who don't know what day it is...

Sorry seems to be the hardest word, but read on.

Enjoyed the film right up to the point until when the guy next door was rude to me. This is a Musical right? Suggest a sing along version is made then the likes of this guy who must have thought this was a rockomentory, The story is good and the music is sometimes out of sync with Elton's lifeline. But it is entertaining. First night was cancelled, we had to wait as the Cinema in Wisbech was undergoing refurb. But it was worth the stress of waiting till the night, now all those TV & Radio reviewers can spoil it for someone else. I'm old enough to remember Elton's early years and saw him once at the Family home, late night getting into a car. I will wait till the dvd comes out and fully enjoy the songs from my lifetime again. Loved I'm still standing. Glad we went. Bring on the sing a long version. Rated 9 because of the experience, Sorry. I will enjoy it fully at home and not miss half being annoyed. Some films you wait for ages, then you get to go, this is one of them.

God music. Interesting but very self indulgent. Just not in the same class as the Queen film.

If you love Elton John's music, you will love this!

I wanted to see this movie the second it came out, but it took a bit of convincing to get my husband to go with me. He ended up LOVING it. We both love Elton John's music and so we were interested in the biographical theme. His music made me want to get up and dance. The movie reaffirmed what I already knew about the struggle it was for him on his way to the top. Why is that always the case? Because I'm now a grandmother, I especially loved the impact his grandmother had in his life. I could go see this again and still enjoy it.

A failure, no justice done to the amazing song it includes Warning: Spoilers
If you read "Elton John: Rocket Man", then probably you probably wonder why the year of this one is 2017 despite said song being many decades older. The reason is that this one here was made a long time after the initial release, which is why I am also pretty skeptical in calling this one here a music video. To me it is more of a fan video. For that it looks pretty solid I suppose. The animation sure isn't the problem by any means and that aspect is definitely good enough to be also used for a full feature film. But, yes there is a "but", a really big "but" even, I think the video did not fit the song at all. Of course, "Rocket Man", the song, is also about isolation and loneliness, but probably only 50% of it. The rest is about being hopeful, being dedicated on an important mission and so on. And thiese second 50% do not play a role at all here. I also felt the individual moments did not feel the exact lyrics we hear during this one particularly well. This film clearly relies on the refugee crisis being important enough these days for people to getg an instant liking to itg and see it as a valuable piece of art. In my opinion it is not. The more emotional moments like when he for whatever reason sees an illusion of his family (wife and children) at the subway station made very little sense and had no impact. Maybe this particular scene could have worked better if there had been actual people looking familiar and similar to his loved ones. But no, that was not it. The scene when we see actual rockets and aviation also feel rushed in only with the intention to make at least some precise connection wit the song we hear. Another failure. I read that director Ajin was/is a refugee himself, so with that in mind I really would have expected a more fitting approach on the subject. There is no such thing. I see that neither he nor his co-director McNally have worked on another project since this one was released and scored millions and millions of views on Youtube. Shame the easily influenced fell for it. But maybe they get to know the amazing song featured in here, so at least there is something positive to it all. Don't get me wrong, I really love Elton John's voice in this one, but the latter is not a creative achievement from the filmmakers here. I suppose these under five minutes will get additional attention when the upcoming Ellton John biopic is released. Clearly, they are hoping for similar success and awards recognition like Rami Malek's Freddie Mercury. Somehow I don't see it happening, but we will see. I am still curious about that one. Anyway, my review rocket is drifting too far away from this short film we got here, so to sum it all up let me tell you that this one gets a thumbs-down and negative recommendation. Watch something else instead or just listen to the song. You are not missing much with the video here, I am a bit surprised Elton John himself seemed to have liked this version.

It's all about the music
alanpuzey29 May 2019
Take away the music and you have a very bitty film left. Poorly directed, all over the place with some really strange scene choices. I can only see this as a cash-in after the success of the fabulous "Bohemian Rhapsody".

I love Elton John's music and really my 3 stars are for that. Sad, as the film detracts from Elton's image.

Uh... whatever...
craigkatzer2 September 2019
Yep. Sure. Vacuous. Oh my... I feel a bit over guided here. But true art is almost beyond comprehension. Perhaps that is what this is... TRUE art. Or perhaps it is just over indulgence. Yes... I agree with myself... it is overindulgence in self pity.

I love Elton John's music and have seen many of his concerts. This film is just an insipid piece of super smelly-ish stuffiness... blah.

What a tragic waste of time.

Pop musical
mioalvarado27 May 2020
If you like modern pop musicals or American Idol then this is for you. If you know anything about Elton John and rock and Roll then don't watch this. Actors singing rock music is the worst.

This is the Animated Music Video "NOT" the Movie
jpleva-9944519 September 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I don't know if the motivation of the creative team was Political. But, it takes one of Sir Elton's most powerful songs, and turns it into a Social/Political statement. The video is so distracting from the music that I cant even watch it anymore. Unlike the Excellent execution of the new "Tiny Dancer" Video which is actually so addictive, as it encompasses a distribution of many different people. It actually enhances the music by Sir Elton! I do not know why, the creative team focused on the main character as an Obama animated character, that seems more of a political statement, than a video. We are bombarded, by so many political statements by Sports, and Entertainment figures, that their talents are squashed by the controversial statements, and not the true Genius of the Music. Keep music, Music!

A let down
CursedSeal8626 January 2020
Skip this unless you were a die hard elton john fan. Why? Because the story is poorly executed and Elton comes off unlikable. The film plays out like a musical and falls back on surreal shots to make its point rather then showing hard hitting scenes. The camera angels and lighting are good but the acting is nothing to write home about.
