NBC grabbed another Tuesday win thanks to “America’s Got Talent” and “This Is Us” — and the latter program didn’t even air last night.
“America’s Got Talent” hit a season high in total viewers, coming in with the best Nielsen numbers in both the all-important adults 18-49 range and overall eyeballs for Tuesday night’s primetime block.
Meanwhile, “This Is Us,” which returns for its third season next week, got some love via the “Paley Center Salutes ‘This Is Us'” special. The program came in right behind “Agt” as the night’s No. 2 program in the key 18-49 demo.

Reality series Castaways is just wrapping its first season on ABC. The show follows 12 people as they attempt to survive while stranded on a group of islands in Indonesia. The series is essentially a test, examining the human need for companionship, and takes place under extreme circumstances. Viewers follow different people from different paths of life, and get to learn about their struggles both on the islands but also, through flashbacks, at home in their comfort zones. While on the island, the contestants learn that they are not alone and that there are other people “stranded” just like them. The […]

The 2018 Emmy Awards are officially the least-watched Emmys on record.
In the time zone adjusted fast national numbers, this year’s telecast drew a 2.4 rating in adults 18-49 and 10.2 million viewers on NBC. That is down only a scant few percentage points in the demo from the 2.5 rating the Emmys drew last year on CBS, but down 11% from the previous viewership low of 11.4 million viewers the Emmys drew in 2017 and 2016. For context, an episode of “America’s Got Talent” on NBC last Wednesday drew the same viewership as this year’s Emmys.
In metered market households, the awards show drew a 7.4 rating Monday night, down approximately 10% from an 8.2 last year. That also represents a new low in that measure for the Emmys telecast.
This marks the latest instance of a major award show taking a hit in the ratings. This year’s Oscars telecast was down 24% in the key demo...

The first season finale of “Making It” was steady with the show’s performance last week, per the Tuesday overnight ratings.
At 10 p.m., “Making It” drew a 0.8 rating in adults 18-49 and 3.8 million viewers. That is only slightly below the show’s Live+Same Day average for the season, and it was also the top-rated show in its time slot. NBC previously renewed the show for a second season.
Earlier on NBC, a steady “America’s Got Talent” was again the top show of the night in both measures.
For ABC, “Bachelor in Paradise” ticked down in the key demo from last week. “Castaways” was steady at 10.
Both “Beat Shazam” and “Love Connection” were steady on Fox.
CBS and The CW aired only repeats.

Summer may not exactly be the Mecca of TV seasons, but people need to beat the heat somehow. Sometimes, that involves vegging out on the couch in front of the air-conditioner — might as well flip on the boob tube.

“America’s Got Talent” was down slightly week-to-week in the Tuesday overnight ratings but still handily won the night for NBC.
“Agt” drew a 1.9 rating in adults 18-49 and 10.6 million viewers. That is down a little over 10% in the demo compared to last week’s Tuesday episode and around 5% in total viewers. Afterwards at 10 p.m., “Making It” drew a 0.8 rating and just under 4 million viewers, notching a similar drop in the demo that “Agt” saw.
For ABC, “Bachelor in Paradise” ticked up for its most-watched Tuesday telecast of the season. “Castaways” was steady at 10.
CBS, Fox, and The CW aired only repeats.

CBS won another Thursday primetime — thanks to “Big Brother” — on a summer night marked by chaotic Nielsen numbers — courtesy of the NFL.
Last night, every broadcast network had at least one pre-emption for NFL preseason games in multiple markets throughout the evening, inflating the early data across the board. Because the numbers were more subject to change than usual, TheWrap has updated the early data with the more accurate fast-national ratings from Nielsen below. And, yes, “Big Brother” still scored a touchdown — just not by as much.
CBS was first in ratings with a 0.9 rating/5 share in the advertiser-coveted 18-49 demographic and in total viewers with an average of 3.9 million, according to final numbers. In between repeats at 9 p.m., “Big Brother” scored a 1.4/6 and 5 million viewers.

The Cma Music Festival brought in plenty of primetime eyeballs for ABC Wednesday, but not enough to match the numbers the show put out last year.
While last night’s telecast scored 4.7 million total viewers and a 0.9 rating/4 share in the all-important adults 18-49 range, the 2017 fest landed 5.7 million viewers and a 1.2/5, slipping 17.5 percent and 25 percent, respectively.
However, the special still gave its home network a win in total viewers, though ABC settled for a second-place tie with NBC in the key demo. First prize in that category went to Fox.

Bachelor in Paradise is still a solid late summer option for ABC.
The fifth season of the dating series secured 3.8 million viewers and a 1.1 rating in the all-important 18-49 demo.
This is right on par with last year's first Tuesday edition, and when you consider the controversy that surrounded that season, this is a positive result.

Leading out of that, Castaways debuted with 3.2 million viewers and a 0.7 rating. This gave the network its best summer launch in the slot in over two years.
The demo tally may have been on the soft side, but for a summer reality series, it is solid.
Over on NBC, America's Got Talent remained dominant but slipped to 10.9 million viewers and a 1.9 rating.
Making it slipped 15 percent week-to-week to 4.4 million viewers and a 1.0 rating.

Summer may be in its final stretch but on the Big 4 and the CW last night things were rockin’ with debuts, a finale, a lot of competition series and another win for America’s Got Talent (1.9/9)
However, with The Wall host and guest judge Chris Hardwick making his on-air return since being investigated for sexual assault allegations in mid June, the summer powerhouse did take a bit of a hit on Tuesday. Down 10% among adults 18-49 from its July 31 show, last night’s Agt was a season low for the show.
Still, with Agt the highest rated show of Tuesday and Week 2 of the Amy Poelher and Nick Offerman fronted Making It (1.0/5) down a tenth from its premiere, NBC topped the night. The Comcast-owned net, which is having its TCA presentation today, snared a 1.6/7 rating and 8.72 million viewers – that’s down tenth from July 31 in the demo but up a touch in total audience.

Broadcast viewers didn’t quite swoon over ABC’s “Bachelor in Paradise” season premiere Tuesday when “Agt” dominated its primetime competition.
At 10 p.m., ABC’s “Castaways” debuted. Though it couldn’t compete with an original episode of NBC’s “Making It,” the new ABC reality show did fine for the network’s time slot.
“Bachelor in Paradise” had a much better season premiere last summer, when the dating show started against NBC’s “American Ninja Warrior,” not “America’s Got Talent.” It also opened with greater attention due to accusations of inappropriate behavior star Corinne Olympios made against fellow participant DeMario Jackson.

ABC’s new survival series “Castaways” takes all of the tropes that have come to define modern reality television and throws them out the window. There are no challenges, no host, no manufactured drama. Just 12 normal people stranded on an island in Indonesia.
Early on in the first episode, the show is defined not as a competition, but as a “social experiment,” a radical attempt to document what happens after you put 12 strangers together on a deserted island with limited supplies, and even more limited survival experience.
“We went out there with kind of theory of what would happen,” showrunner Grant Kahler said in an interview with TheWrap. “That people would start to rely on each other and companionship as a real tool of survival, and that is what we found. The companionship became, in many cases, more important than food and water to a lot of these people.”

August is not exactly a month known for exciting new shows. The summer push has largely crested, Emmys fatigue is real, and the new fall season lingers just beyond the horizon.
But while the TV world plays catch-up on a busy summer so far, the roster of new shows continues to expand, as always. It’s a less-traditional slate than usual, but that might be necessary to catch the eyes of TV viewers readying themselves for the rest of 2018.
