Your next Taylor Sheridan obsession is nearly here. Paramount+ has just revealed the first trailer for “Lawean: Bass Reeves,” starring and produced by David Oyelowo, as well as the premiere date for the new series – Nov. 5. You can watch the trailer above.
Based on the true story of Bass Reeves, one of the first Black deputy U.S. marshals west of the Mississippi River (and the likely inspiration for the Lone Ranger), this is also the beginning of a new anthology series from Sheridan that will look at different law men through history.
Sheridan, of course, is the creator and overseer of “Yellowstone” and its various offshoots and other Paramount+ blockbusters like “Mayor of Kingstown,” “Tulsa King” and the recent “Special Ops: Lioness.” Chad Feehan created “Lawmen: Bass Reeves,” which at one point was being eyed (and was even announced) as a spin-off of “1883,” before becoming its own series (and potential franchise).

Since this is a day ending in “Y” that means it’s time for another Bruce Willis movie to arrive, this time it’s A Day to Die. I may have used that line before, but he’s putting out so many films I’m running out of ways to introduce them.
A Day to Die opens in the middle of a hostage situation. A special security team that includes Connor and Mason is called in to deal with a hostage situation at a school that involves what appears to be some well-armed militia types. It all goes very badly due to the police somehow not noticing several guys with RPGs on nearby rooftops. It also didn’t help that the attackers had a landmine that not only...

We’re still a couple of weeks out from The Boys returning with its second season, but based on the footage we’ve seen so far, it certainly looks as if we’re in for another wild ride. One that may even top the first run of the show, which was one of the best things that we’d seen on television in a long time.
Of course, trying to predict how something as crazy as The Boys is going to end up is a fool’s errand, but let’s not forget that it won’t be the only new thing arriving on Amazon Prime in September. Far from it, in fact.
Earlier today, the streaming service announced their entire line-up of new titles for next month and it’s a meaty list, comprising both films and television shows. And though The Boys may be the highlight for many...

An election season is fast-approaching in the U.S. So for its new releases in September 2020, Amazon Prime is bringing back one of its most political shows.
The Boys season 2 premieres its first three episodes on September 4. Though the show on its face is a superhero story, viewers of season 1 will know it’s really about America’s troubling embrace of entertainment with fascism. Sounds fun and not at all terrifying right before a presidential election!
That’s not the only bleak Amazon original on the schedule for September. British TV adaptation Utopia arrives on September 25. This Gillian Flynn-produced series follows fans of a comic book who believe it predicts…world-ending pandemics. Darn it. Amazon’s only original film this month is a…documentary about voter suppression from Liz Garbus called All In: The Fight for Democracy. Yikes.

As one of the weirder “back to school” seasons in living memory rolls out, Hulu is heading back to school in its own way for September 2020.
The biggest Hulu original arriving to the streaming services stream this month is season 2 of coming-of-age comedy Pen15…which of course stars two adults who have already come of age playing their middle school selves.
Speaking of middle school, perhaps the biggest non-original addition to the Hulu library this month is the arrival of all The Twilight Saga movies on September 1. That should prove to be a real nostalgia trip for interested parties. Other library titles of note include Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle, The Terminator, and 2019’s Judy on September 25.
Bookending Hulu’s originals this month is another intriguing comedy, Woke. This series will star Lamorne Morris as a Black cartoonist who gets an unexpected wakeup call.

Historians estimate that one in four cowboys was African American, though you’d never guess by looking at westerns. Are they finally about to get the Hollywood treatment?
In Hell on the Border, a B-movie western set in Arkansas, Bass Reeves saves the life of a judge, tracks down a dangerous outlaw, and is appointed deputy Us marshal. So far, so familiar. What makes this interesting is that Reeves (1838-1910) was not just a real historical character, but the first black deputy west of the Mississippi River.
And the film doesn’t tell the half of it. Reeves was a runaway slave who sought refuge in Native American territories, where he learned the Cherokee, Creek and Seminole languages. Later, as a marshal, he would sometimes wear disguises to sneak up on the white bandits who operated with impunity in the otherwise lawless region; this was when he wasn’t chasing them long-distance on horseback,...

Golden Globes winner Jacqueline Bisset (Dancing on the Edge) has joined the cast of Birds of Paradise from Amazon Studios and Anonymous Content. Sarah Adina Smith wrote and is directing the film, which is based on the novel, Bright Burning Stars, by A.K. Small. The pic, starring Kristine Froseth and Diana Silvers, is set at a prestigious ballet school in Paris, where the new girl (Silvers) befriends a grieving dance prodigy (Froseth) as the dancers compete for the school’s ultimate prize: to receive a contract to join the Parisian Opera’s ballet company. As the pressure mounts and the girls are pushed to their physical and emotional limits, their bond is tested and they’re forced to ask themselves just how far they are willing to go to win. Anonymous’ Trevor Adley and Dara Gordon and Everything is Everything’s Jonako Donley are producing the film, which is currently shooting in Budapest.

While I didn’t find Rian Johnson’s “Knives Out” (Lionsgate/Mrc) as wonderful a whodunit as most audiences (and critics), I do cheer his evident love for the genre and his energy and enthusiasm in revitalizing the all-star murder mystery. (Give me a crisp new story like this over a thousand sludgy remakes like the recent “Murder on the Orient Express.”) And it’s a win for everyone when an original movie — not a sequel, not a remake, not a reboot, not an adaptation — becomes a much-talked-about hit. So let’s hear it for more fresh takes on beloved movie tropes.
Also available: Keep your indies straight — “The Wave” (Echo Wolf/Epic) features Justin Long on a psychedelic trip, while the critically acclaimed “Waves” (Lionsgate) is a powerful tale of race and family featuring powerhouse acting from Sterling K. "Is there anybody that'll ride with 'em?" "I will." Lionsgate has released an official trailer for an indie "epic, action-packed Western" titled Hell on the Border. Based on the true life story of Bass Reeves, a legendary tough African American cowboy in the Wild West. David Gyasi stars as Bass Reeves, the first black deputy U.S. Marshal west of the Mississippi River. He worked mostly in Arkansas and the Oklahoma Territory. During his long career, he was credited with arresting more than 3,000 felons. He shot and killed 14 outlaws in self-defense. Sounds like quite a badass, alas this trailer isn't that badass after all. Hell on the Border also stars Frank Grillo, Zahn McClarnon, Randy Wayne, Manu Intiraymi, Rudy Youngblood, Ashley Atwood, and Ron Perlman. Looks like this might be entertaining, with some solid action scenes to boot. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Wes Miller's Hell on the Border,...

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, The Falcon and The Winter Soldier, Hell On The Border, and more in today's daily Link Tank!
Here is what a real descendant of the 1921 Tulsa race riots thought of HBO's Watchmen.
Chayanne Hubbard watched the premiere episode of Watchmen because she's a Regina King fan. She had no idea that the HBO drama, which Damon Lindelof based on and expanded from Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons' classic graphic novel, would portray the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre. It's an event that ripped apart her family's life, leaving them homeless and horrified nearly 100 years ago. Her great-uncle Harold Wood had told her about the mobs of angry white men who torched and looted affluent black peoples' homes and businesses, but she couldn't really picture such a gut-wrenching event.
