Cruelty Comes Again and Again
Hitchcoc22 February 2022
Warning: Spoilers
The Russells and their efforts at becoming the toast of New York are center stage here. She will do anything to get her way, including sacrificing her daughter. And he goes along with everything, but I wouldn't be surprised to see a wedge being driven. Clara Barton plays a role as there is a competition among the rich to donate to the Red Cross. There are several ugly scenes and it appears that episode 5 is going to be really interesting, based on a telegram that arrives.

Another strong episode
sparklefish24 February 2022
Power plays and social climbing are the basis for every decision George and Bertha Russell make. In this episode, we see them use their business and social manipulation tactics on their own daughter. It's very well written and fascinating and heartbreaking to watch.

Marian and Peggy have a heart to heart and seem to be repairing their friendship. Peggy continues to break barriers and defy social conventions when she interviews Clara Barton for The Globe.

The scheming Turner meets the scheming Oscar and we know no good can come of that. It will be fun to see how that unfolds.

Nathan Lane is a delight every second he is on the screen. It was a nice surprise to see him in this episode.

As always, cinematography, costumes, and interiors were pristine and pleasing eye candy.

Pretty good episode
jpismyname11 October 2023
Aurora Fanes introduces Bertha to Ward McAllister, a real historical figure who is an "arbiter of social taste", which will give the Russells a chance to be accepted by the high society. Aurora and Bertha, along with Marian and Raikes, travel to Dansville to see Red Cross founder and nurse Clarissa Barton speak. We also see an impoverished part of NYC as we see the standoffish head housekeeper Mrs. Armstrong visit her ailing elderly mother in their run down apartment.

Honestly this episode is pretty good and I am loving the Russells' storylines but I am distracted by Louisa Jacobson's acting. Being one of the main casts, she definitely needs to improve a bit more, but then we all start somewhere.

ARM & ELBOW WORK TOGETHER FINE
douglasjordane10 March 2022
THE MOST UNLIKELY ALLIANCES AND AGREEMENTS HAPPEN RIGHT UNDER OUR NOSES. THE SECRET TIES ONE KEEPS IN ORDER TO PROTECT ONES POSITION ARE MORE LIKE ASSES AND ELBOWS: THE CONNECTION IS PURELY UTILITARIAN AND THE SUCCESS OF WHICH IS A VERY DIRTY BUSINESS.

CHARITY HAS TWO FUNCTIONS: TO MAKE THE ASS AND ELBOW SOMEHOW WORK ALBEIT THEY ARE UNRELATED.

Great show, wonderful sets, splendid acting and

Warning: Spoilers
All the rest. That said, not all the young men in New York society could have been such total wimps. I was sort of hoping that Gladys' suitor would have said thanks for the job offer Mr Russell, but with your daughter as my bride, I will be as rich as any man can dream of.

And since we are in Mills and Boon land, perhaps George Russell could have turned to the lad and said, why you cheeky little sod, you remind me of me when I was your age. Welcome to the family.

As said good show, but it is getting a bit milk and watery.

Off the rails.
jp-20623 February 2022
There were changes in the cinematography in this episode. Someone is trying to be clever with the camera and it's surprisingly distracting.

The dialog is rough. Some of the musical cues are straight out of a Mexican soap opera. I find Mr. And Mrs. Russell the most intriguing. Louisa Jacobsen really needs acting lessons. The set feels way too clean for the time period and I wish they'd move the production to film or something a little less crisp.

Things I like? The lawyer guy is good to look at. I really like Audra McDonald. As I mentioned before, I like the Russells. I don't know if the clothing is time appropriate or not but it looks good.

This is no Downton Abbey.....
nancycferrara-907036 July 2022
The costuming design seems to detract from the refinement that Julian Fellowes, wanted to portray. Some have reviewed this as a comedy.... Maybe a parody, of the exaggerated life style of the 'nuevo riche' in the Gilded Age. But the outlandish colors and garrish designs... are certainly distracting.

Boring
stephenberinger13 March 2022
We made it through five episodes thinking it would get better. It did not. There isn't one likable character and the storyline is slow and boring. Line delivery seems wooden and forced having us question asking skills. This is NO DOWNTON ABBEY.
