- When his grandmother dies, there is no one left in the Ukrainian village who can take care of the 9-year-old Roman. His mother Oksana (29) went to Germany two years ago to work as a nurse in the household of a senior couple. She sends money regularly, but has not seen her son since she left. Roman finally wants to live with his mom again. He travels after her, overcomes the border barriers to Europe and actually manages to get through to her. But Oksana is not alone. Roman finds her living with the widower of the lady she took care of. The old man's apartment becomes Roman's new home.
Although Gert Schwarz (62] doesn't speak his language, he tries to make friends with the boy. And at first, Roman feels comfortable in this new, exciting environment. But one night the boy wakes up and finds his mother in Schwarz's bed. When Roman riots in his jealousy, Oksana loses control over the irrepressible boy, while Schwarz develops a paranoid fear that Oksana's illegality might be discovered. For Roman, Germany becomes a picture behind a window frame. A window where he is not even allowed to show himself.
Then, suddenly, Oksana becomes ill - so ill that she urgently needs to see a doctor. Schwarz drives her to the hospital, but pretends not to know the almost unconscious woman.
Back in the apartment Roman is now all alone with his rival. When the police arrive because they got to Schwarz address via Oksana's cell phone, he decides to hide with Roman in a remote garden house settlement and takes Roman's cell phone away so that the boy can no longer call his mother. He promises the child that his mom would soon follow them, and for several days Roman lives with Schwarz in his dacha, cut off from civilization.
Although Roman's attempts to make contact with his mother are repeatedly blocked by Schwarz, the two begin to come to terms with each other carefully. Schwarz shows a certain care for Roman, and turns out to be a surprisingly good playmate. Finally, he gains Roman's sympathy when he teaches him to shoot with a rifle. Then, suddenly - in the middle of a game - Schwarz suffers a sugar-shock due to his diabetes. Roman cannot get help as Schwarz has destroyed the mobile phones and Roman has failed before in his search for an escape route through the swampy forest. For two days the boy tries to save the unconscious man. Then Schwarz dies. Roman is now trapped - alone with a corpse in a secluded summer house. He is searching for food. And he waits for his mother to arrive.
