a must for those interested in French haute couture
This documentary takes a long and loving look at the various treasures hidden in the archives of haute couture giants like Chanel and Dior. It also explains what it takes to produce, say, an evening gown covered in sequins, not only in terms of design but also in terms of execution. Here the documentary takes the viewers on a guided tour backstage, by introducing them to disciplines and professions like sewing, shoemaking or embroidery - all at the top level, of course.
In case you, dear reader, have ever wondered how people can "bend" textile into the shape of a camelia flower : here's your chance...
Much of the work shown is unique in terms of beauty and quality. One can but bow one's head before so much expertise and artistry... Much of the work is pretty innovative too, since the great fashion houses constantly rival in invention. The segment on the creation of modern "plissé" textiles was completely new to me, as was the segment on the use of ceramics (!) in combination with crocheting.
"Les trésors" dances with light : silk gleams, crystals shine, sequins sparkle. Still, it is impossible to watch the documentary without wondering about some of the darker aspects of fashion, such as the use of real bird feathers. And of course many of the marvelous gowns shown are so hideously expensive that only the super-super-superrich can afford them...
