- On the Ivory Coast in West Africa in the present day, a sniper draws a bead on an approaching truck. A creature emerges from the rock face behind her, and the sniper fires off a wild shot as the creature attacks her.
In a jetliner over the Pacific Ocean, a man gets up and asks a woman passenger if the washbag he found in the aisle is hers. She takes it and thanks the man, who goes back to his seat. The woman goes into the restroom and opens the washbag, takes a wrapped message out of a toothpaste tube inside, then sends a signal over the transmitter in her glasses. She then eats the message, then spins to face a creature coming out of the wall.
In Moscow, a man runs through the streets. He ducks into a building and makes a call, asking how long until the extraction team will get him out of the safehouse. Once he hangs up, the man sits down to recover his breath. A creature emerges from the ceiling and drops on him.
Ryan and his friends are playing basketball. Ryan shoots and misses, and his friend Tibo comes over and comments on all of the times that Ryan has been sick recently and hasn't been with them. Two men in black suits are waiting for Ryan, standing next to a SUV.
Yasmin is at her family's flat, packing, and they note it's the third time she's been selected. Her mother Najia wonders if Yasmin's new boss is okay with her being away so much, and Yasmin hesitantly says that he is.
At the station, Sgt. Ramesh complains that Yasmin keeps getting called away and wonders why he keeps losing his best probationer. He wonders if it's an undercover assignment, and Yasmin says that it sort of is. Ramesh gives in and Yasmin promises that she'll be back. Two men in black suits wait across the street next to a car, and Ramesh points them out.
Graham's doctor Ethan tells him that his test results are normal. He offers his condolences about Grace's death, and Graham says that he's traveling. Graham goes out and finds two men in black suits waiting for him.
The Doctor is in a garage working on the TARDIS when six men in black arrive. Their leader, the Rendition Man, tells the Doctor that they need her to come with them, and tells her that her friends are inside the SUVs. The Rendition Man says that it's in all their best interests if they come with him and his people. The Doctor gets in and the Rendition Man drives them down a motorway. She asks her friends if everything went all right, apart from the kidnapping. Yasmin asks what the plan is, and the Doctor says that they'll go where the Rendition Man wants them to go so they can find out who wants them. The GPS the Rendition Man is following scrambles, and he says that it shouldn't be doing it. A beam of light shoots out of the GPS, vaporizing the Rendition Man, and the vehicle accelerates by itself. The SUV then brakes by itself, and the GPS says "Die" repeatedly as the word "Die" flashes repeatedly on its screen.
The SUV backs up, accelerating, and the Doctor confirms that the brakes don't work. The Doctor sonics the GPS and it fires a beam of light, just missing her. She grabs the rear view mirror and deflects the next beam, reflecting it back on the GPS and burning it out. The Doctor pumps the brakes just before the SUV goes off an overpass under construction.
Everyone sighs in a relief, and a man's voice speaks out from the dashboard, asking what they did with his car. The Doctor tells the speaker what happened, and the man insists it's not possible. He explains that he's C and was having them brought to London to MI6. The Doctor tells C that they're coming in to get answers and drives off.
In London, the group arrive at MI6 headquarters and see agents bringing the TARDIS in. C comes out and assumes Graham is the Doctor, and the Doctor corrects him. The man insists that he wasn't trying to kill them but their systems got hacked. C explains that every security agency on Earth has authorized him to ask the Doctor for her help.
As he leads them off, C explains that there have been a spate of worldwide attacks on intelligence agents of every nationality. No rivalry agencies have ordered the attacks, and no agency possesses the technology to carry out the attacks or can understand what has been done. C takes them to the jetliner passenger, who is in a coma in a bed in a MI6 ward. He says that she was found unconscious in the jetliner restroom , and the Doctor confirms from the agent's medical report that her DNA has been rewritten so that she's no longer human. When she says that it's beyond human technology, C admits that he was worried she'd say that. He asks the Doctor if they can rely on her to help.
Later in C's office, C gives the companions spy equipment and tells an eager Graham that the equipment aren't toys. He then tells them that the agents were all investigating leads relating to Daniel Barton, the founder of VOR, a software company, robots, and scientific and medical research. C warns that VOR is more powerful than most nations, and the Doctor says that they'll need C's best man. He tells them that would be O, but he sacked him because he believed in aliens. The Doctor immediately calls up O and says that C apologies for being an idiot. O sends back a photo of a fish, and C says that Daniel was once one of their agents when he went to work in the U.S. Then Daniel withdrew cooperation and C worries he became a double agent.
Before C can explain further, a laser blast comes through the window and hits him in the neck, killing him. The others take cover as more shots come through the window, and the companions grab the spy equipment and run for the TARDIS. Creatures emerge from the walls and advance on C, as the Doctor runs into the TARDIS with the others. She explains that there's another picture hidden within the picture of the fish, and tracks the coordinates to Australia. One of the creatures starts coming through the exterior door, and the Doctor dematerializes the TARDIS. The creature is sucked out, and the Doctor admits that she didn't know anything could get into the TARDIS that way. She figures the same creatures attacked the spies, and discovers that the sonic can't read their traces.
The Doctor figures that they should split resources, and tells Graham that the two of them are going to Australia to meet her old mate O. Ryan and Yasmin will investigate Daniel, their only lead. They'll infiltrate VOR and check out Daniel's cover story. The Doctor gives them a bioscanner disguised as a digital recorder to check Daniel, and tells them to trust no one
In San Francisco, Ryan and Yasmin arrive at VOR and use the spy equipment to hack into the VOR computer and establish fake IDs for themselves. Ryan worries about their total lack of spy training and starts panicking. Yasmin tells him not to panic while not trusting anyone, and they go inside posing as a journalist and photographer. Daniel and his assistant Collins greet them, and Daniel says that he had to fire half of the PR team because of a mix-up.
The Doctor and Graham arrive in the Great Victoria Desert and the TARDIS materializes at the house O is sitting outside, accompanied by two guards. He tells his guards to say hello to the Doctor, as the Doctor and Graham come out O introduces his guards, Seesay and Browning, and explains that they're with Australian Secret Service. Browning says that they're under orders to keep all of them safe, and the Doctor goes inside.
O pours tea and says that all of his books are the full MI6 record of the unexplained that he compiled. He complains that MI6 mocked him and his evidence, and has heard that C was shot. O asks if it relates to the attacks on agents, wondering if it's aliens, and the Doctor explains that the aliens are rewriting their victims' DNA.
Graham finds a bank of surveillance monitors and O admits that he likes to know if anyone is watching him. O asks how the Doctor knows the aliens haven't followed them there.
Daniel tells Ryan and Yasmin that they only got in because they're Brits, and his mother reads their paper. Yasmin uses the fake recorder to scan Daniel's DNA, and Daniel confirms their identities in his computer. Satisfied, Daniel tells them to continue. He talks about how he has his own passenger plane, while Ryan uses a device in his camera to copy Daniel's security badge. Yasmin points out the disadvantages of the Internet, all of which Daniel has been accused of ignoring. Daniel says that he did something great and it got hijacked, and warns Yasmin that they can't trust anyone. He cuts the interview short to deal with something, and tells Yasmin that he's having a birthday party the next day at his house, and invites them to come along.
Once Daniel leaves, Ryan suggests that they got to the party and do some snooping around. Yasmin checks the bioscanner and says that it shows that Daniel's DNA is only 93% human.
At O's house, Seesay and Browning stand watch outside as night falls. Something moves in the brush, and inside O turns on the security lights. He tells the Doctor and Graham that something tripped his motion sensors.
The two agents draw their guns and go out on the lawn, and the security lights go on around them.
O wonders what the Doctor has brought there, and she says that she doesn't know. She goes outside to take a look, and O and Graham follow her. Outside, the Doctor sonics the area but gets no readings but she can sense the aliens. She figures the aliens are watching them, and Browning tells the Doctor to go inside and figure out how to stop the aliens while they do their job to protect them.
The Doctor, Graham, and O go back inside, and Browning and Seesay split up to search the area. The lights flicker off and on, and then one of the aliens appears in a burst of light. Seesay shoots at it and it disappears, then reappears closer to her. More appear as Browning runs over, and then all emit bursts of light incinerating the agents. The Doctor runs out and tells the aliens to get away from them, and the aliens turn toward her and then teleport over. O suggests they make a strategic retreat, and they back into the house.
Graham confirms via the surveillance monitors that the aliens are surrounding the building. When they move in, O activates an electric fence, making the aliens disappear. The Doctor checks O' blueprints of the house and figures that the aliens retreated, but there's still one outside. It goes through the door and the Doctor figures that it's not used to the "real" world's reality. The alien passes through the wall, and the Doctor sonics a cage suspended from the ceiling. It drops on the creature and O feeds the cage enough energy to contain the alien.
The Doctor approaches the cage and asks the alien who it is and why it's only attacking spies. It finally says that it's from far beyond their understanding, and it takes its form on Earth to mock them because humans' shape amuses them. The alien says that they are stable now and ready to take the universe.
Ryan and Yasmin wait until everyone leaves VOR for the night and spot a surveillance camera. Yasmin uses spy equipment to cloak themselves from it. They go into Daniel's office and download all of the data Daniel's computer has access to. There are surveillance monitors hooked up to cameras throughout the building, and go back to the computer as Daniel enters the building.
As they wait for the data, Yasmin talks about how she doesn't want her sister Sonya involved with Ryan. Ryan's duplicate badge goes off, indicating that Daniel is back in the building and is heading their way. Once the device finishes downloading the data, Ryan and Yasmin hide. Daniel announces that he knows they're there and tells them to show themselves. The aliens emerge from the walls and they report that there have been obstacles. They insist that they must remove them all, but Daniel refuses. They advance threateningly saying the project must continue as planned and they must defend. Daniel remains unmoved, and the aliens disappear.
Daniel goes to his desk computer and discovers that it's turned on. He turns it off, grabs a satchel, and leaves. Ryan figures that it's time to go, but when Yasmin goes to the desk an alien emerges and lunges at Yasmin. She disappears and Ryan tells the alien to bring her back. It says that Yasmin is gone and Ryan runs out.
Yasmin finds herself in a murky void filled with organic pillars reaching up into infinity. She calls, asking if anyone is there, but receives no answer.
The Doctor realizes the captive alien is giving off more energy.
Ryan runs outside and sees the aliens appearing in different windows.
Yasmin watches as energy shoots down the tendrils. She tells the energy to stay away from her.
Ryan watches as the aliens flash in seemingly-random patterns.
O's monitors short out, and O figures the alien is trying to kill itself.
The energy shoots into Yasmin and then she appears in the cage where the alien was. Ryan calls the Doctor and asks for her help, and the Doctor tells him that she has Yasmin and they're coming for Ryan.
The next morning, Yasmin sits on O's porch, Ryan sits down next to her and asks if she's okay, and Yasmin says that she was somewhere that was like nothingness but there were things there, watching her. She thought she was going to die, and Ryan promises that he's never going to let that happen to her.
In the house, O tells Graham that he chose to exile himself there. O asks how long Graham has known the Doctor, and mentions that he and the Doctor's paths crossed when she was a man. Graham notes that the Doctor has never said where she's from, and O points out a whole shelf of his research about the Doctor. He asks if Graham wants to have a look, but the Doctor comes out of the TARDIS and interrupts them before Graham can answer.
Everyone gathers outside and the Doctor goes over what Yasmin discovered about Daniel. O confirms that VOR seeps into every corner of modern technology and could easily be more powerful than any country. Yasmin admits that she couldn't tell who was in charge, Daniel or the aliens. The Doctor checks the data Yasmin took from Daniel and finds alien code in Daniel's most obscure company, but doesn't find a match to any known language in the universe. She syncs the laptop with the TARDIS language banks and projects a single decrypted image. The Doctor decodes the image and determines that there are locations for the aliens across Earth. There are hundreds of locations, and the Doctor realizes the aliens are spies embedded on Earth.
The image continues decrypting, revealing multiple Earths, and O figures they should ask who the spy master is, because he holds the answers. Graham figures that it's Daniel, and Ryan notes they have invites to Daniel's party. The Doctor figures she can hack invitations for herself, O, and Graham, and leads them into the TARDIS.
Once the team dons tuxedos, they go to Daniel's estate and confirm they're on the guest list. Inside, Daniel gets a surveillance report on the Doctor and the others from O's house. At the roulette table, Ryan and Graham win. The Doctor plays blackjack, thinking it's Snap, and O flirts with Yasmin while they play craps. Daniel comes in and the team notice, and the Doctor follows him outside. The Doctor asks if Daniel assassinated C himself or had someone else do it, and asks why there's an alien code embedded in the edge of VOR's systems. Daniel denies everything and dismisses the Doctor as unhinged, and she promises to stop him. He tells her to stay away from him and leaves.
The Doctor, Yasmin, and O follow Daniel into the manor, then spot him leaving in a car. They take some nearby motorcycles and follow Daniel's car, and the driver points them out to Daniel. Daniel has the driver try to lose them, then fires a pistol at them. The driver takes the car to a VOR hangar and the doors close. The Doctor sonics the doors open and the team goes inside. As Daniel takes the plane out on the runway, the Doctor sonics the rear hatch open and the team get aboard. O gets in last, admitting he's not good at springing, and the Doctor sonics the hatch close as the plane lifts off.
The team enter the main cabin and the Doctor tells them to make themselves comfortable. She then tells O that she read his file and it says he's a champion sprinter. O admits that she got him, and tells everyone to look out the windows. They do and see O's house floating in the air near them. O tells the Doctor to catch up, and reminds her that he did say to look for the spy master... or the Master.
The Doctor shares at her old enemy in shock, and the Master assures her it can be him. He says that he's the Doctor's best enemy, and he took O's place. The Master tells them that O is close to his heart, and reveals that he has O's tissue-compressed corpse in a matchbox in his jacket pocket. He explains that he killed O on his first day to work and took his identity,
The Doctor runs to the cockpit and discovers that Daniel is gone. The Master points out the bomb sitting on the pilot's chair, and says that he made it sonic-proof and got rid of the parachutes. He invites Yasmin to stick with him because he controls everything, and Daniel was called away before takeoff. The aliens appear, and the Doctor orders everyone back. She closes the cockpit door and the bomb explodes.
The plane depressurizes and starts to go down. The Master tells the Doctor that she should know before she dies that everything she knows is a lie. He triggers a remote and disappears, and the aliens envelop the Doctor, teleporting her to the nothingness where Yasmin was.
