- In the far future, the Doctor and her friends face a brutal battle across the farthest reaches of space to protect the last of the human race against the deadly Cybermen.
- Patrick bicycles down the road and comes to a baby in a basket. He gets out and looks at it, then takes it home to his wife Meg. They tell a police officer, confirming that there was no note on it. Meg says that they'll look after the baby until the officer finds the parents, and Patrick agrees. Eventually, as the baby Brendan grows u-p, his parents receive word that their adoption of the boy has been approved. They raise their son, watching as he goes to school, and when he's sick Meg says that she'll call the Doctor.
The Doctor and her companions reach the coordinates that Shelley gave them, and the Doctor warns them that they're in the future in the aftermath of the Cyberwars. The Cybermen have wiped out the majority of the human race, She sonics the area and confirms that there are seven humans in the settlement below.
In the settlement, Ravio tells Feekat that it will several days to make repairs. Two shuttles arrive overhead and Ravio says that it's too soon. A boy, Ethan, runs over and complains that the Cybermen found them. The Doctor and her team arrive and ask if they need humans, and tells them to concentrate on how they can help. The human holster their weapon and the Doctor's companions set up their equipment. Feekat explains that he's mostly in charge, and they run from the Cybermen rather than fight them. Ravio says that their escape craft crashed and she's unable to repair. The Doctor tells them to get everyone to hide and not run.
Graham sets up the Doctor's neural inhibitors and tells Ethan that they hope to activate the Cybermen's sensors so that they sense what's been done to them. Yasmin sets up a particle project to send particles of gold into the air. Feekat goes to fix the Gravraft, and Yedlarmi's little brother Fuskle comes over as Ryan sets up a forcefield that will destroy any Cybermen that come near.
The Doctor discovers that the Cybermen are sending a jamming signal to block her sonic. Feekat says that they're normal humans and refuge3es, and have lost everything to the Cyberman. The Doctor insists that her and her friends care, and tells Feekat to get into a building while her team fights the Cybermen.
The seven human take cover, and Cyberdrones approach the settlement and open fire. The Doctor orders everyone down as the drones target the defenses and destroy them. A Cyberdrone flies into a building and Fusskle runs. A drone chases him and the Doctor yells at him not to run but he does anyway. More drones open fire killing Fusskle and a woman that goes to rescue him.
Feekat stares at the dead Fusskle, and the Doctor tells the humans to run. The humans want to fight, but the Doctor says that the drones are the advance guard. After a moment, Feekat leads his people off. The Doctor tells her team to go with the humans because they won't get back to the TARDIS alive, and insists that they have to leave her to hold off the Cybermen. She admits that she's been reckless with them, and the Cybermen will convert them if they capture them. After a moment, her companions leave.
Ashad and his Cybermen advances on the settlement and the Doctor yells that it's her. Asgad says that all humans will be deleted, and the Doctor runs to draw them off. Ashad sees the companions and the Cybermen open fire on them. They take cover in a building, and the Cybermen pursue them.
Graham and Yasmin reach the Gravraft, but they realize that they've lost Ryan. The Cybermen and their drones continue firing, and Ravio orders Graham and Yasmin inside for expedited takeoff. Yedlarmi points out that Fusskle is dead because the companions' defenses didn't work, and he figures the others are dead. Ravio launches the Gravraft departs.
The Doctor sees the Gravraft fly off. She finds Ryan, who explains that he got separate from the others.
Ashad enters a building where Feekat and Ethan are hiding, and calls out that he knows they're there and should surrender. Ethan steps out and says that he's the only one there and he surrenders. Ashad says that Ethan shows courage but knows he's a liar, and opens fire on Feekat. He then aims his wrist gun at Ethan and wonders if he should let him live to speak of his power and the deaths of his comrades. Ashad tells Ethan to spread his message that humanity is erased and the Cybermen will rise again.
The Doctor and Ryan come in, and the Doctor throws a rigged grenade. As she, Ethan, and Ryan run, the Doctor says that they only have one options. They run for one of the ships to steal it, and the Doctor tries to hot-wire it. Ethan says that there's a faster way, takes over, and activates it. The Doctor has everyone strap in and takes over the manual controls. Ashad and his soldiers watch as the shuttle flies off.
A now-adult Brendan dresses his best, and Patrick asks if he's ready. He takes his son to the police station, and the older Sergeant admires his CV. He asks why Brendan wants to be a guard, and Brendan says that he wants to make a difference. The Sergeant says that he was with Patrick when he found Brendan, and says that Brendan has grown up fine.
On the Gravraft, Graham wonders how they're going to get back to Ryan. Yasmin assures him that they'll find him, while Ravio argues with Yedlarmi that they make it to Ko Sharmus and the Boundary if they don't push the engines. They've been told that it's a gateway to a random part of the galaxy where the Cybermen can't follow.
The engines overload and the system melt down. It explodes and the Gravraft spins through space.
The Doctor navigates the Cybershuttle , and Ethan programs the coordinates for Ko Sharmusvia warp drive. The Doctor is surprised that Ethan is good at hijacking the ship, and Ethan explains that his father trained him well. They knew the last Cybermen would come intent on destroying the last humans.
A hologram of Ashad appears and says that they know where the Cybershuttle is. The Doctor tells him who he is and says that she'll stop them as she has before, but Ashad tells her that he knows of her via the Cyberium and she'll be destroyed along with humanity. The Doctor reminds Ashad that he used to be human once, and Ashad says that when the Cyber Empire arrived he was a willing recruit. He was denied ascension and hid in the shadows, ashamed. Now he understands that he was chosen to revive the glory of the Cyber race. The Doctor tells him that there is no glory in being a Cyberman, and Ashad hates himself because of the emotions that drive him.
Ashad admits that the Doctor is correct, and says that the Cyberium has distilled his purpose. He says that everything is in him for the ascension of the Cybermen... and beyond. The Doctor wonders what he means by "beyond", and Ashad says that their death of everything is within him. With that, the hologram disappears.
Brendan chases a thief to a cliff edge and advises him to surrender. The thief draws a gun and orders him to go the edge of the cliff. Brendan tries to talk the thief down, but the thief shoots him and Brendan plummets down the cliff and hits the ground below. The thief runs off, and the Sergeant finds Brendan. Brendqan gasps for life and realizes that he's fine, and goes looking for the thief.
Later a doctor examines Brendan as Patrick and the Sergeant look on. Brendan says that he was lucky, and later receives a commendation. Me admires his photo in the paper, and she and Patrick both stare at their adopted son.
Grahm discovers that they're still alive but the ship is in critical condition. Yasmin figures that there must be something they can do, and Ravio says that they have to conserve power. Something hits the hull, and Yedlarmi says that they're just the scraps. The third remaining human, Bescot, insists that they won't go down through a fight.
There are more noises on the hull, and Ravio says that they're in the middle of old space battlefields. Yasmin goes to a porthole to see what is causing the noise, and sees thousands of dead Cybermen floating around them.
The Gravraft turns and Yasmin sees dozens of dormant ships. Graham spots a docking bay, and Ravio warns that they don't have enough power. Ravio figures they can vent the air to give them enough spin to reach a ship, and they shut everything down. The power is enough to get them to a dormant ship, They arrive in a landing bay and look around.
Ashad;'s ship follow the trail of the Gravraft and come out warp near the battlefield. They detect the human lifeforms, and Ashad says that the site of their greatest defeat will be a shrine for the Cybermen's rebirth.
The shuttle arrives and an old man greets them. he says that he's Ko Sharmus, and insists that there are no humans left. The Doctor tells him that he's mistaken and lands the ship nearby.
Graham and the others explore the dormant ship, and Graham keeps pointing out that they're alive because of them. Yedlarmi leads them to the control room, and says that the ship is a war carrier. Graham and Yasmin wonders what the carrier was carrying. The group reach the control deck and Yedlarmi confirms that it has enough power that they can use it as a settlement ship. Graham and Ravio go to search the carrier ship, while Yedlarmi reboots the ship one section at a time.
Graham and Ravio explore Level 139, and the power come up. Ravio concedes that they might have a good chance of surviving. They open a door and go in, and Ravio tells Graham that he's strange... and she likes strange. They find dormant Cyberman and Ravio realizes that the carrier was bringing Cybermen soldiers to the front. Graham works out that there are thousands of dormant Cybermen there... and they're in the middle of them.
Ashad and his soldiers board the carrier ship, and Ashad says that the Cyberium's vision shall be fulfilled.
The Doctor, Ryan, and Ethan find Ko Sharmus, who is delighted to see three survivors. They go into the settlement and Ko Sharmus explains that he and the survivors with him created the settlement. He was captured and sent for upgrade, and managed to get away. They managed to get there and build shelter, and word spread so others came. Now there's only Ko Sharmus, as he helped everyone through the Boundary but felt it was his duty for others to wait. The Doctor points out that he sacrificed his life on the chance that others were there. Ko Sharmus says that the Boundary is real and the Doctor asks him to show them.
A panel on the control deck activates, and Yedlarmi realizes that they've been boarded. Yasmin has him open a control channel to Graham and Ravio, telling them to head back to the control deck. Graham and Ravio get into an elevator and ascend, just as Ashad and his two soldiers arrive. Ashad examines the pods containing the dormant Cybermen and says that ascension is near.
When Graham and Ravio arrive, Ravio says that they can't take Cybermen to the Boundary. Yasmin points out that they don't have any other options, and insists that they're going to keep the humans safe, find the Doctor, and take the Cybermen down. Graham agrees, and they confirm that Ashad has activated the dormant soldiers.
Ashad tells his soldiers to awaken and the ascension shall begin. It powers up the first soldier and it screams, and Ravio watches and realize they're carrying a Cyberman that makes other Cybermen scream.
Ko Sharmus leads the new arrivals to the beach and says that's where it starts. He's seen people go through and hopes they're alive, and explains that it was preferable to the alternative. Ko Sharmus has the Doctor step forward, saying that the Boundary is activated by proximity. A portal opens, and Ko Sharmus says that it's the last way out of the galaxy.
An elderly Brendan retires, and his commander Sergeant presents him with a medal. As Brendan leaves, the unaged Patrick and the Sergeant are waiting outside and ask Brendan to come with them to the back office. He goes with them and Patrick turns on a clock. There is advanced equipment there, and the two men handcuff him to a chair and attach electrodes to his head. They thank him for his service and say that Brendan won't remember, and activate the device. Brendan screams in pain.
The carrier ship emerges from the warp vortex, and Yasmin and Bescot try to signal the others. Graham monitors the pods and warns that Ashad has awakened the soldiers. They emerge from their pods and salute Ashad, who then says tells the humans that they know the humans are there and his warriors are coming for them.
The Cybermen march through the ship toward the control deck. Meanwhile, Yasmin reaches the Doctor on the radio. Yasmin explains what's happening on the ship.
Graham seals the control deck doors.
The Doctor tells Yasmin and t6he others to get off the ship. Yasmin says that they can't as the Cybermen break through the door. The Boundary glows and they see Gallifrey on the other side. Ko Shamus says that he's never seen it before through the Boundary.
The Cybermen break through the doors.
The Master comes through the Boundary and tells the Doctor to be afraid because everything is going to change.
