- On the way to Freecloud, Picard requests a stop at a Romulan refugee planet where he reunites with Elnor, the young Romulan he befriended fourteen years ago; Narek continues to learn more about Soji.
- The crew's journey to Freecloud takes a detour when Picard orders a stop at the planet Vashti, where Picard and Raffi relocated Romulan refugees 14 years earlier. Upon arrival, Picard reunites with Elnor (Evan Evagora), a young Romulan he befriended during the relocation. Meanwhile, Narek continues his attempts to learn more about Soji while Narissa's impatience with his lack of progress grows.
- Picard asks Rios to make a detour to the planet Vashti, where he helped relocate Romulan refugees before the attack on Mars. Picard had befriended a young boy named Elnor (Evan Evagora) and promised to return for him, but abandoned the boy after he resigned from Starfleet. Elnor was then raised by the Qowat Milat, warrior nuns who have sworn an oath of absolute candor. This mean total communication of emotions, without any filter between thought and word.
Raffi is not in favor of going to Vashti, and neither is Rios. Rios says that there is a power vacuum in the entire Qiris sector. Smugglers & warlords run the show, led by Kar Kantar. Kar Kantar even has a Romulan Bird of Prey at his command. Vashti is also the hotbed of the Romulan rebirth movement. Picard says that Elnor is a trained assassin, and they need him on their team. But they are not for hire, the Qowat Milat have to chose you. The Qowat Milat are the most feared enemies of the Tal Shiar.
Now 14 years later, Picard has returned to Vashti to meet Elnor. This was his only chance to meet Elnor as he may never pass this way again in his life. Vashti has a planetary defense shield around it. Romulans refuse entry to Picard and his ship and they have to bribe their way through. As soon as Picard beams down, he is identified by the local Romulans.
Picard asks Elnor to join his quest; He explains to the Qowat Milat, & their leader Zani, that the quest he faces is dangerous and Elnor might even die. But the Qowat Milat is a woman's organization and Elnor was trained here as there was no other option for him when the evacuation was abandoned. Elnor needs a new home. Elnor initially refuses, but changes his mind when Picard is attacked by Romulans who resent Starfleet for abandoning the evacuation effort.
Picard and Elnor beam up to La Sirena, where Rios and Raffi are fighting with a local warlord Kar Kantar. A mystery ship helps La Sirena win the battle but is damaged in the process. They beam the pilot, former Borg drone Seven of Nine (Jeri Ryan), to La Sirena. Picard tells Elnor not to pick up unnecessary fights and only fight when the cause is just.
On the Artifact, Soji tries to learn more about the Romulans that were assimilated by the Artifact and their prophesied "destroyer". Legend says that Ganmadan is the Day of Annihilation. On the day all demons rise up and answer the call of the Destroyer. Soji suspects that Narek is the Tal Shiar. Soji wants to know what happened to Ramdha's ship after it was assimilated by the Borg. Narek offers to get her information on the Romulans by hacking into the Borg databases, but the pair have a falling out when he expresses doubt about Soji's past. Narek says that Terran passenger manifests are part of public record. But there is no record of Soji being on a particular ship Ellison that she claimed to be on, when she shipped out of the Beat Quadrant in 2396.
Narissa gives Narek one week to get information on other synths from Soji. Narek says that if he presses Soji too hard, it might activate her. Narissa reminds Narek that Soji is the Destroyer.
