In Davis' history class her instructor is talking about the time 10 U.S. Marines led an army of mercenaries against a far superior enemy force and won, namely thanks to the leadership skills of their commanding officer. This is referring to the Battle of Derna in May of 1805, which was the first time United States soldiers fought on foreign soil, the battle was part of the First Barbary War. The Barbary War began sometime in 1800, initially it was between the nation of Sweden and a collective of North African nations known as the Barbary States, the United States' involvement in the war lasted from May 10, 1801 - June 10, 1805. The conflict began when Barbary ships began attacking merchant ships traveling along the North African coast and stealing their cargo, sometimes even the ship itself, first they began hitting Swedish ships and then American ones after the end of the Revolutionary War. These pirates starting targeting US ships in 1785, both Presidents George Washington and John Adams tried resolving the issue with negotiation, the US was still recovering from the Revolutionary War and was hesitant to enter into another armed conflict. However by the time Thomas Jefferson took office in March of 1801 negotiation had gone nowhere and the pirate attacks continued, as such President Jefferson issued the United States' first declaration of war against the nations of Barbary.
The Battle of Derna involved eight US Marines and two Navy midshipman, led by Lt. William Eaton, and a force of 400 Greek mercenaries recruited and trained by the Marines, marching 521 miles from Alexandria, Egypt to the port city of Derna, Libya. Derna was heavily defended and the US/Greek forces were heavily outnumbered, but this port was crucial to US forces starting a beachhead in the country and resuming the flow of cargo along the coast. After US Navy ships USS Argus and USS Enterprise carried out a naval bombardment of the city's defenses they managed to open a hole in the wall, this allowed Lt. Eaton to lead a force of 50 Marines and Greeks to charge the city's defensive line, they were vastly outnumbered and under heavy musket fire, despite being shot and wounded Eaton managed to take advantage of the damage done by the naval shelling and take the city's gun emplacements and turn them against the enemy allowing the city to be overrun.
