Negan Returns
claudio_carvalho16 November 2019
While hunting a boar, Kelly has hearing problem and is attacked by walkers and passes out. Negan is hunted by a Hilltop group and he meets Brandon that worships him. In Hilltop, supplies are being stolen. Ezekiel is coughing and Siddiq discovers a secret. Negan meets two survivors. Amelia and her son Milo, and asks Brandon to return to Alexandria. He gets close to the boy and intends to take them both to Hilltop but something tragic happens. Daryl, Connie and Magna find Kelly and the supplies that are missing. Negan goes to the border to meet the Whisperers.

"What It Always Is" is the fifth episode of this great Tenth Season of The Walking Dead. The most important subplot is the return of the dangerous Negan seeking alliance with Alpha. The storyline of Amelia and Milo is very sad. The fate of Ezekiel is another tragic part of this show. My vote is seven.

Title (Brazil): "O Que Sempre É" ("What It Always Is")

Note: On 08 January 2024, I saw this episode again.

So What Did We Learn Tonight?
sevenlilxenos4 November 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Its not who kills the wild boar, but who bites it first that wins.

Lucky thing there always is some good gas laying around for Daryl's motorcycle.

History tends to get exaggerated and twisted as the years go by in the ZA, but don't tell Negan the wrong facts about what he allegedly did.

Barbwire makes an effective Walker garrote, but finding the guy that has your old leather jacket is just a little too convenient.

Some Walker chicks are hotter than others.

Daryl has plenty of fishing stories to tell which helps take the edge off while looking for lost people in the woods.

Hereditary thyroid cancer isn't the way you would expect a king who has won so many battles to go out.

People are a resource but having to school a young, awestruck, wide eyed Negan fan isn't very practical when your on the run and just ain't gonna happen.

Running with Alpha's group does have its risks if you get on her bad side.

Does anyone else wonder how the hell a mother and son, on their own approx 10 years into the ZA are so clean looking?

Sausage fingers and loose wrists make for the best nut tapping.

Aaron carrying hand bandages when he only has one hand is a little ironic, but still helpful however, if Alpha wants Gamma to flirt with Aaron for ulterior reasons, she might want to pick someone of the other gender.

You cant sign language behind Daryl's back and get away with it.

Should be interesting to see how long it takes Negan to take over Alpha's leadership position. I really like Ryan Hurst and hope he doesn't get killed off in the process but that appears almost inevitable at least as things now stand.

Best Line: I don't care what you do as long as I don't have to see your pasty ass face again.

8.5

We are all Negan
mixailliaggas11 February 2020
The 9 rating is for Negan all alone. Who cares about Magna's, Yumiko's and Kelly's lives?? Rick, Morgan, Maggie and even Dwight and Jadis are absent and they are replaced by them? Pathetic...

Evolution of Negan
miss_danielle_jayne3 November 2019
Warning: Spoilers
This episode was a standout for me. The character development was fantastic. Ezekiel's suffering and illness battles come to a head, and I truly hope he works up the courage to talk to Carol before it's too late. Negan's arc in this episode was nothing short of phenomenal. He was a long time villain and this episode really highlights the internal battle he has with himself to reconcile from his past errors. We see his true feelings on Carl and how he wants to put his past indiscretions behind him. We see his longing for a fatherly role and the scene with the little boy had me feeling sad that he had lost so much. Another highlight for me was Gamma. Looks are most certainly deceiving and we see the toll her loyalty to the Whisperers has on her. We also see that the Whisperers have been up to no good despite the 'truce', and I'm curious to see what will come of the contaminated water supply. And Beta v Negan at the end! I cannot wait for next week! TWD is officially back people!

Same bunch of reviewers whose only IMDB activity is to give episodes of TWD "10" stars with same wording.
random-707787 November 2019
The show keeps dropping in ratings as a show and losing viewers as each episode goes on. Th last season was so bad that this seasons premier was lowest viewed ever. The show is becoming an idiotic soap opera and this is another episode that continues the trend.

What It Always Is

Warning: Spoilers
We knew exactly how the ending would go and that Negan would revert, even if briefly, to his old ways. That didn't make us smile any less when it happened.

But the show just continues to be a shell of what it once was.

CLASSIC NEGAN
dayolo-460594 November 2019
Warning: Spoilers
This episode was great with a few flaws

Pros -I loved everything about Negan and Brandon. Brandon is like a fanboy to Negan and some scenes were really funny. -Daryl and Connie are 100% confirmed. -The whole talk with Negan and that kid was pretty funny. -I was surprised to see Brandon go out that way. But brutal! -NEGAN AND BETA MEET HOLY

Cons -strong beginning and ending, but weaker middle -The whole jelly subplot was mediocre.

LOVED this episode, can't wait to see next week's

Negan returns
yahaira-729-69470120 February 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Not an easy episode, the new people are featured with the protagonist fit them in but I don't think they add anything maybe more filler the showcis like a soap. I keep fast forwarding since it's a predictable narrative. It took 10 seasons for other members of the community to have a storyline. Sadly Sadiqq has post-traumatic hallucinations, the king has a goiter or cancer and depression. He has lost his world and power. I'm glad Negan issues justice on Brandon who is a horrible creepy wanna be. Alpha grooms one of her followers to spy for her. Her southern accent is creepy. I can't wait for her eventual downfall she is another sociopath.

If a zombie walks through the woods does it make a sound?
ueltomas5 November 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Not in the Walking Dead, those zombies are stealthy. Got to add drama somehow I guess and honestly I much prefer a good old fashioned zombie grapple to PTSD and other hallucinations. Nearly deaf girl, Kelly, is alone in the woods by choice. Let that sink in for a moment. It's later explained that she told the two guys she was with she was tracking something and to leave her behind because (best scenario) she was gonna carry a dead pig all the way back to Hilltop by herself. The only reason this needs to happen is for the supplies going missing subplot that cuts into Negan's screentime. Then again if the best they can come up with is "nut tapping" maybe keep it brief. The episode was just to set up Negan meeting the whisperers anyway.

Best one yet
davisond-957303 November 2019
Warning: Spoilers
I'm glad this season has had a bigger focus on Negan than 9 did and it is clearly shown in this episode but let's talk about the other things first.

The big reveal is that Ezekiel discovers he has cancer, easily treatable but not in the apocalypse.

Kelly's hearing has gotten progressively worse, this results in losing food to some walkers and almost dying until dog finds her. Speaking of which Daryl and Connie have another cute moment when he tells her a story about Merle

Finally let's talk about Negan, and the psycho freak Brandon who didn't actually let him out. He has some crazy obsession about Negan, he tries to find a new sanctuary, become a saviour and even makes a new Lucille for Negan as well as giving him his old leather jacket. He kills a mother and his son and Negan doesn't like this so he smashes his head with a rock and at the end discovers beta!

Jeffrey Dean Morgan shines yet again
Splarke224 November 2019
Warning: Spoilers
This episode was all about Negan! Well, not entirely, but JDM stole the whole show once again! I never thought I'd be so excited to see Negan back in a leather jacket with Lucille (2.0) in his hand. Now that he's infiltrated the Whisperers, fingers crossed the show goes the comic route for this part of his story!!

"What It Always Is" shifts focus to some of the supporting characters, offering insights into their motivations and struggles and the return of Negan to the spotlight
fernandoschiavi29 March 2024
Kelly becomes disoriented due to her hearing loss and gets lost in the woods, but is later found by Daryl, Connie, and Magna. Aaron encounters Gamma and offers her bandages after she cuts her hand; Gamma flees and informs Alpha of their interaction. Negan is found and joined by Brandon; Brandon murders a mother and her son in an effort to impress Negan, leading Negan to kill him. At Hilltop, the community works to rebuild the wall, while Ezekiel reveals to Siddiq that he has thyroid cancer. Magna reveals to Yumiko that she killed a man who attacked her young cousin, causing a rift between the two. Negan crosses into the Whisperers' territory and is attacked by Beta.

"What It Always Is" shifts focus to some of the supporting characters, offering insights into their motivations and struggles. The episode explores the return of Negan to the spotlight as he navigates his complex relationship with the Whisperers. Negan's interactions with Beta are particularly compelling, as they showcase Negan's cunning and ability to manipulate those around him.

The episode also delves into the character of Siddiq, revealing the trauma he continues to suffer from his experiences with the Whisperers. Siddiq's struggles to cope with his past trauma highlight the psychological toll of living in a world ravaged by the undead. The theme of trauma and its long-lasting effects is a central focus of "What It Always Is," adding depth to the character-driven narrative.

Overall, "What It Always Is" is a character-driven episode that offers valuable insights into the supporting cast while advancing the larger narrative. The episode's exploration of trauma and manipulation adds layers to the story, making it a standout installment in the season.

The Cold War Continues
ThomasDrufke4 November 2019
It's been a long time since we've had a Negan centric storyline, and while the show once again proved that the cast is probably too large, this season's arc seems to be picking up slowly but surely. Several different story bits were played out this week as Kelly was on her own amidst walkers and Whisperers in the forests, while Daryl & Connie went looking, Ezekiel unveiled a secret, Gamma underwent more trauma, and Negan sprung loose and eventually met up with The Whisperers.

I will gladly take anything we can get with Connie and Daryl teaming up or simply sharing the screen. Those two are dynamic together and at this point, may be the best pairing of the entire cast. Heck, they even had a brief moment that looked like it could have been leading towards something romantic, though I don't think Daryl is attracted to anybody at this point.

Negan was given the chance to monologue a bit this week after a long absence of being in a cell for a season and a half. Of course, trouble always follows him, so his peace and quiet didn't last long as he had a Negan worshipper "helping" him out along the way. A brutally devastating re-awakening for a character who we thought may have metaphorically gone to sleep. But it looks like, especially now with Lucille and his classic jacket, there's more story here. In many ways, this arc felt so much like Magneto from X-Men Apocalypse. The guy can't escape violence.

The stuff with Ezekiel was really poignant and eye-opening. One would never consider a character on this show to die from cancer, but it looks like he may be heading that way. Simply from a story perspective, I thought the idea of bringing this into the show was creative and fascinating. I love when the show sits back and does something you never thought was possible. It will eventually be tough to see him go, but I love what this might bring to Khary Payton's role this season.

It's a slow burn this year, very much like a cold war like Angela Kang had mentioned, but I'm looking forward to what these next few episodes may bring as the mid-season finale approaches.

Another filler episode
lukasbutters6 November 2019
I am giving it 4 stars only because of more screentime for Negan and J.D. Morgan's great acting. However, even his plotline was nonsensical, not to mention other plotlines which were plain stupid.

To be honest, I really don't care about the development of new characters in the 10th season. I don't care about them, their acting is bad, they could be killed right off and I wouldn't even blink. I want to see the main plot move forward. Unfortunately, it moves extremely slow, which will be the death of the show.

And of course they ended it on cliffhanger, just when things started to be interesting. I hate when I don't finish watching a show, however TWD might be the first one for me.

Here's Negan! Jeffrey Dean Morgan shines in this magnificent episode
Holt3444 November 2019
Jeffrey Dean Morgan steals the show as Megan in this visually stunning episode, it's truly a great one, one of the season's best! The character, Brandon is a well written one and one of the best new characters for season 10. Seeing Negan's human side after some horrifying two seasons of psychological horror that he brought to the characters. Jeffrey said in an interview that he thought the character was one divensional in S7 and 8, I agree but I always saw past it as a performance which it really was most of the time as we learn from some dialogue in this episode. Negan is one of my favorite characters from the graphic novel and seeing his Whisperer story arc in the TV show is something I've looked forward to as it is one of my personal favorite things about the Whisperer War. The other part of the episode follows the survivors in the Hilltop and it has a lot of great character development.

Laura Belsey did an amazing job at directing the episode, bringing us some great visual story telling from a great script! The cinematography was perfect. There's a lot of zombies, with that comes a lot of entertaining zombie kills and Jeffrey delivers with giving us the brutal nature of fight skills that Negan has, how I've missed him out in the world.
