Cliffhanger Episode
claudio_carvalho21 December 2019
In flashback, Alpha assigns Dante to infiltrate in Alexandria. In the present days, he will stab Siddiqi's head when Rosita arrives in the room interrupting him. Meanwhile Siddiq reanimates while Dante and Rosita fight each other. Gamma and Aaron meet each other again and she gives the location of the horde expecting to see her nephew. Daryl interrogates Dante with Gabriel and Carol. Lydia is still missing. Michonne heads to Oceanside with a group and they stop at a library to get some books. Gabriel has an encounter with Dante in the cell with tragic consequences. Daryl and his group head to the location of the horde and when Carol sees Alpha, she hunts her down and the group follows her in a deadly cave.

"The World Before" is a cliffhanger episode of "The Walking Dead". The fate of traitor Dante is one of the best parts of the episode. The impulsive Carol again jeopardizes her friends. The end of the episode is a great introduction of the next season. My vote is eight.

Title (Brazil): "O Mundo Antes" ("The World Before")

Note: On 09 January 2024, I saw this episode again.

Good episode, poor mid-season finale
callcooldude24 November 2019
Warning: Spoilers
This didn't really feel like a midseason finale, it actually felt more like a premiere episode. But it was still good nonetheless. The first 7 minutes were brilliant, as was the Dante/Gabriel scene and the final few minutes. The Virgil and Michonne scenes may feel pointless now but I'm pretty sure they'll seem more important after watching 10B. I reckon this will definitely be Michonne's exit storyline, so it's not just random filler. Overall, even though I enjoyed it, I was a little disappointed that this was the mid-season finale. But I can't wait for the second half of the season, I expect big things!

So What Did We Learn Tonight?
sevenlilxenos26 November 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Apparently these writers don't understand that a mid-season finale is suppose to be much more eventful and exciting.

Walker Siddig seemed to be jelly of Dante and Rosita spending time alone together so he interceded only to be killed once again.

Gabriel's character arc has now gone full swing from a sniveling coward locking out his church congregation to judge, jury and stabbing executioner bad azz.

Apparently Eugene's stalking of Rosita will be back in play now that shes down to just one boyfriend again.

Rosita isn't very good with holding on to her boyfriends very long.

Judith isn't very good with holding on to her mothers very long.

Putting a baby in the middle of Aaron and Gamma's secret meetings will most likely turn out to be a bad idea.

A library really is a good place for someone like Luke to meet new friends.

At least Michone's departure was somewhat explained and understandable unlike Maggie's.

Virgil should be able to name his price if he really has a large cache of working weapons and ammo at his Naval base.

Apparently Negan and Beta both negotiated an early holiday break in their contracts.

Carol chasing Alpha like a lil kid playing tag looked stupid at the time and really does now that they are trapped in a big cave with many hungry Walkers.

Should not have at least Daryl known better than running blindly, into unknown territory, deep in the woods at night?

Best line of the night: Hearing Siddiq's death gurgles for the second week in a row.

Second worst TWD midseason finale, but..
horahicharis24 November 2019
Warning: Spoilers
First of all I am mad how slowly this episode was and how unnecessary is to show us new character like Virgil in midseason finale. I get it, this was something like Michonne final episodes and her future with The Walking Dead, but there are so many other ways to do that. I was so excited to see that episode is 55 minutes long but for what?

Good side of this episode is that second half of the season looks really promising. Similar like the Evolution episode 09x08. I love lines between Carol and Daryl and Michonne and Judith. I believe in Angela Kang she is hiding something special for us. Second half of the season looks promising. Where is Michonne, how will Daryl and Carol survive? Looks like first half of the season is a build up for hell in second half. That is the only reason I'm gonna give this episode 10/10.

Good episode so excited for the second half

Warning: Spoilers
Actually this episode is amazing 45 minutes seemed like two hours, don't listen to those who still affected by rick and blaming the show because rick grimes just left it's getting better literally the show is good it doesn't matter if the character we all love and admire decided to leave the show the actor has full rights to leave and live his own life and we still have good characters like daryl/negan/carol and the new characters is not that bad actually they perfect this episode show us that there is a coming war between the whisperers and the survivors plus they are going to meet new people from different place where michonne went to they have guns and bullets so they can take down alpha herd and probably magna lied on them and soon we will know who release negan and is he gonna turn against alpha or not there is more coming in the other half of the show there is some cringy and boring scenes but that doesn't affect on whole episode It's okay I wish rick was there we might see a different scenario and rick definitely will stood front of alpha like carol did but we still have some heroes

The Best Episode of This Season
ecatalan989 December 2019
Warning: Spoilers
A broody type of episode, number 8 had the right balance of action and drama. Siddiq dies, which I think it's sort of a let down because it undoes Carl Grimes sacrifice (think about the intro of "Alien 3", where we find out that Newt and corporal Hicks have died, rendering all the sacrifice in "Aliens" rather pointless). Though Siddiq wasn't my favorite character, I was hoping he was going to be more developed in this season. The whisperers are basically in the background this time, save for Alpha showing up in the end. The biggest "W T F" moment was definitely Father Gabriel knifing Dante for killing Siddiq. It was also a bit out of place since Gabriel has so far refrained from all out violence. The dumb choices made by our heroes in the end just shows how mindless the writers of the show are turning out to be. However entertaining TWD remains, it is impossible to overlook how the show is constantly repeating itself: out heroes face a threat, they fight it, they win, another threat comes along, fight it, they win, etc. Ironically, the REAL walking dead are the lesser of threats. It's the rival human gangs that remain the REAL antagonists of the show and I can't stand that not a SINGLE episode since the first season has dealt with SOMEONE finding a cure, finding a way to make a vaccine. No one talks about WHAT triggered the apocalypse. I believe The Walking Dead could do wonders if they veered the story in that direction instead of constantly rehashing previous story plots. I love the show and it's still very entertaining, but it needs a SERIOUS creative input if it wants to go on for a couple of more years. An "END" needs to be in sight. All good shows must come to an end, like "Breaking Bad" and "Game Of Thrones". If the creators want to keep doing more offshoots of the series then they should do them, but not at the expense of prolonging a show so beloved by fans.

My opinion
girlhamsem26 November 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Mid season final in the walking dead are always mind blowing, you know amazing is happening and it's the episode where you know a loved a character will die. Not this time.

This season mid final wasn't the best, the only "major" death that happened is Dante and he wasn't that of importance, not a lot of action.

So, it wasn't the best episode ever, but it wasn't the worse either

Paranoia
ThomasDrufke25 November 2019
Much like the pace and tone of the rest of the season, the mid-season finale has a "Cold War" vibe and doesn't necessarily go for big moment after big moment, like perhaps previous seasons did. The Whisperers themselves have been villains you feel their presence even when they're not on the show, and this episode was no different. You only really see Alpha & Dante, if we're putting Gamma aside for obvious reasons, but with every scene you get the sense that The Survivors are dealing with the mental wrath of The Whisperers every second. I loved watching Rosita get the center stage with a fight scene (it seems like it's been seasons since we saw that), and even Gabriel went off and killed Dante, something I certainly didn't expect but welcomed. The only detractor for me was the sudden appearance of a guy from an island during Michonne's trek to Oceanside and how his presence felt like a cheap way of explaining why Danai Gurira won't be in a few episodes to start the second half. I wouldn't be surprised if this will play into Gurira's exit from the show, but it felt completely out of left field and contrived. But hey, we got a pretty great cliffhanger to forget about that. Looking forward to February when the show returns.

A really good episode for the plot and good acting just poor mid-season finale
MaxAlshehri24 November 2019
You can't give an episode a 1 or 3 because it was a not good mid-season finale you're reviewing the episode not if it's a good mid-season finale or not also I'd give it a 8 if it weren't for these wanna be critics dummies giving it a 1 or the trolls that stopped watching yet still reviewing because they don't have a life and honestly it feels like it's AMC's fault you can't have breaks in seasons especially if your show is dying if it was just episode 8 and episode 9 is next week or next month it would've been fine with me , My expectations were so high for this episode but you'll get a pass Angela Kang since it's the first time you disappoint me.

Weak Midseason Finale
TheDragonfly4425 November 2019
Warning: Spoilers
All of the scenes with Dante were really good but overall not much happened, the character choices at the end resulting in the cliffhanger were immensely stupid. And there was no Negan. A poor Midseason Finale. 60/100

It's season 6 all over again!
elvis-1198624 November 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Chill people. It looks like writers are doing the same thing as season 6. Where mid-season final "Start to finish" was a slow and nothing huge happened but it delivered in mid-season premier "No way out". BTW that is still one of the best episodes of show.

This episode ended on a big cliffhanger just like "start to finish" and the next episode must be huge!

And chill people this is not the last of Michonne!

Wow I was super shocked when Gabriel killed Dante. That was really great scene!

The Boring Dead: Slow Episode & Negan's Weird Absence
panagiotis199315 November 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Siddiq is dead? Nooooo! I actually really liked his character, really sad he's dead. Yawning, yawning, yawning, this episode will definitely make you sleepy. Its a 54 minutes long episode and literally nothing interesting happens. We get to see exactly what mission Dante had by infiltrating Alexandria. Dante got what he deserved, he got killed brutally by Gabriel. We get a glimpse of what could be a new group of survivors that live on an island. Also I think for the first time on TWD we see people traveling by boat, I don't know I find that to be interesting. We also have a group searching for Alpha's horde with no success, also people still search for Lydia, please stop, I wish they never find her, she is such an annoying character. In the end we see our group chasing Alpha and getting trapped inside a cave surrounded by walkers. It was kind of an interesting cliffhanger but nothing too exciting. Oh and btw where is Negan? Like where is he? He was supposed to join the Whisperers and then he just vanishes? Wtf nonsense is this? Overall in this episode we don't see much happening, its just more filler and slooooow build up for things to come, im kinda dissapointed. Its a 6/10 from me.

How are any of the main characters still alive?
ofbodin-966-48552025 November 2019
Warning: Spoilers
It never ceases to amaze me how utterly stupid and naive the characters of this show is. Now they're blindly running into a dark cave and "shockingly" falls down into Alpha's hidden zombie army. I get that people need to do some stupid once in a while for the sake of the plot, but at this point ALL they're doing is failing and screwing up. Is there not a single clever person left on the entire show? Everyone has the decision-making skill of the first teenager victim in a slasher movie. End this already...

For the first time For 10yrs I give this rating why?
amine-201025 November 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Because the writers the laughing on us I tried not to give bad rating but I'm done I've been fan like 10years ...but if u look closely u gonna see that this show became a mess in everything... They do the same thingS every seasona and they don't get tired of It or care about audience ..this season started good and ended with with last 4 minutes... Bad acting from everyone /directing was a bad to/writing is childish ( writing of symphonic guy /and new black guy/ Daryl / rosita) "Dante" the lines he said to them the only thing for me was good in this episode... This episode was kids running in the woods kill two walkers and get back to safety (there's scenes with horde in the woods in Oceanside they show thousand of walkers and then boooom nothing happened haha) why this? Michonne going on journey with someone don't know why this? Just kill her if she's leaving it's gonna be intense episode or u can't? They make Daryl babysitting for Carol.but anyways she's high as hell always and again put them in danger why? U call this cllifhanger? Stupid hair of Eugene what is that? Rosita boxing walkers what is that? Rosita fighting with huge body of "Dante" that he's a 6 feet and kill walker in the same time what is that? Siddik was beside his baby daughter like 5 second and Rosita still fighting Dante like 4minute and they show up next scene he still didn't move his hand or touch baby just rrrrrrrrgrr what is that u think that I'm stupid I can't see that directing? Where's negan? He's the only thing make twd alive after Rick? I've seen thousand of movies and shows and I know what I'm saying this episode was bad and bad... I will forget next half till its done and going to watch it straight for the first time I'm not ready for February.... Merry Christmas fans I'm sorry for us

It was on OK mid-season finale, but here's my beef with the last 2 seasons Warning: Spoilers
While this isnt really a review for this episode, and more just sharing my 2 cents about one glaring issue im having with seaosn 9 and 10, this episode did make me kinda wonder if the writers are even trying, the characters are kinda losing depth, especially carol. I get it your kid died BUT YOURE SMARTER THAN THIS. Also I saw the Dante "twist" coming since the character was introduced. He just kinda showed up right after the whisperers marked their territory? Kinda sus. They made it pretty obvious and my first thought when i saw Dante was "Hes and undercover whisperer spy" and i never doubted it, so there was no surprise from me when he betrayed them. But here's my beef with the last two seasons... WHERE ARE THEIR GUNS!?!? After the beat the saviors they should've had a CRAP LOAD of guns! all the weapons the saviors confiscated from them, hell even the ones they had from oceanside! They just don't use them! Why not! THEY HAVE A BULLET MAKER FOR F'S SAKE!! There's an occasional pistol but i haven't seen a rifle since season 8. They could obliterate the whisperers with some rifles, but i guess that wouldn't do the plot any good. And now they're going to that navy base to get more weapons? Did i miss something? Did something happen to their guns? Seriously, the whisperers have a single double barrel shotgun between the lot of em, if every one had like one gun they'd just win. dress up as a horde of walkers, walk into their camp like Darryl literally did last season and kill them all. so simple, its just a glaring plot hole how EASY it would be to defeat the whisperers, like they've fought the governor (albeit only darryl and carol know about that, and maggie if she ever shows up), Carol SINGLE HANDEDLY destroyed Terminus and saved everybody, they won against the saviors who were pretty much a private militia being run by the badass genius Negan (who btw is now my favorite character) and theyre somehow struggling with a bunch of imbred idiots that look like corey taylor. anyways, this show better stop being stupid real soon, this new showrunner is better, but still doesnt hold a candle to Frank Darabont. we need him back

DEVASTATING in a good way
jurirupertmueller24 November 2019
Warning: Spoilers
I think not every midseason episode has to be like a huge ass action sequence. Especially because I feel like the second part of this season is going to explode. You think Michonne would leave without a bang? Nah.

Also the first minutes were perfect with Rosita discovering that Dante killed Siddiq and then fighting him while Coco is close to getting devoured by her father. Though you could expect nothing serious to happen, but they captured that moment really good in my opinion.

Rage and Fear play an important role in that episode as well, which is depicted in characters doing irrational things what might seem stupid if you first see it, but in reality are way more relatable than you might think. You stop thinking clearly.

I hope what happens to Michonne, Daryl and Carol is going to be satisfying. I think the best is yet to come, just enjoy the show and lean back.

And so it goes...
songod-9500325 November 2019
Warning: Spoilers
"And so it goes but where it's going no one knows" -Nick Lowe

Oh it is not perhaps that opaque, but the show while having some nice eps and good scenes this season seems to be coasting. I thought the break through was Gamma finding Lydia was still alive and that Alpha was lying. Apparently no. She lead them into a trap which lead us to yet another cliff hanger style ending.

When will one of the men Rosita has screwed over, literally, just put her in her place? Zahid (RIP), the Preacher, Eugene, and who knows how many others have filled her nymphomaniac sex needs? She did not kill Zahid (sp) but had no right to be hurt as she was because of the others she's slept with. She was a fav but now she is annoying.

As one other reviewer said, we're gonna have to wait for the season finale for the end of Alpha; but then spend next season fighting Beta. I think it would be best to off Beta cause without him Alpha is weak; and with Negan somewhere in the fold as a double agent (or maybe the new Beta)... well then I dunno. Almost do not care.

The time jump, the new world now, all that got me back into the show. But this drag with the Whisperers is draining my interest.

What's not to Like?
jackbrown-4422126 November 2019
Personally, unpopular opinion it MAY be, I really enjoyed this episode!!!! I thought the storylines had such a meaning and were amazing (a culmination of what we've already witnessed in this first half). I found myself on the edge of my seat with every twist and turn the story took, amazingly recurrent cinematography with this Cold War vibe lingering throughout. I was amazed and very pleased at the same time how they executed certain culminating stories promptly and not dragging them out. As a consistent and committed TWD fan through the highs and apparent lows, I thoroughly enjoyed this mid season finale which gave a new take on what's on that feeling of the season.... SO FAR!!!

Compared to last year's mid-season finale...
fredschaefer-406-62320425 November 2019
Warning: Spoilers
THE WALKING DEAD mid season finale for Season 10 was something of a disappointment after a first half that, for the most part, pleased fans. No one's head got bashed in, and there were no big character death's that totally alienated long time viewers. But when compared to the mid season finale for Season 9, where Jesus bought it, and The Whisperers made themselves known, this episode, titled "The World Before," felt pretty tame. I think its biggest fault was that it did not advance the coming of The Whisperer War very much, not to mention that we hardly saw Alpha, while Beta and Negan were completely absent. Thus, the best story arc of the season was MIA. Last week's episode, with the shocking turn of events with Siddiq and Dante, was resolved this week, and it was the highlight of the show. I think Father Gabriel's stock went way up when he singlehandedly meted out justice to the unrepentant Whisperer spy, who had betrayed then all. I commend the writers for letting think Gabriel was about to forgive yet another heinous villain, only to have pull out a knife and go full Jason Vorhees. But a lot of the rest of the episode involved a lot of talking and traveling, which amounted to setting the table for the second half. Michone goes to Oceanside, meets a new character, Virgil, who just might be in possession of something that just might be of help against the Whisperers. It is common knowledge that Danai Gurira is leaving the show, so we might have feared that Michone was walking into a trap when she left with Virgil, but the certainty that they would never kill off such a fan favorite in some mundane manner kept the suspense to a minimum. The other plotline, which involved Darryl, Carol, Aaron, Jerry, and the others going in search of Alpha's horde was pretty much a waste of time, and its resolution required that some very savvy characters act totally stupid - stupid like rushing head on into a cave in what is obviously a trap. It was a big nothing of a cliffhanger ending.

Still, "The World Before" makes the Season 5 finale of FEAR THE WALKING DEAD look like an episode of THE SOPRANOS. And in one respect, it did do its job of raising questions that could only be answered by coming back for the second half: Where's Lydia? When will Negan get that "quality time" with Alpha that was so pivotal in the comics? Will Michone learn something about Rick on Virgil's island; something that will keep her from coming back to Alexandria? Will Ezekiel die from his cancer? And other stuff that wasn't directly addressed in this episode.

There are rumors that THE WALKING DEAD might wrap it up with Season 12, which might not be such a bad thing as they are getting ever closer to the point where Robert Kirkman's comic wrapped up. There is a third TWD spinoff coming, and FEAR is still on the air, so even if that proves to be true, it looks like the Dead have many miles still to walk.

amazing episode, so so mid season finale...
james-patrick-732-46346824 November 2019
Warning: Spoilers
This was not a bad episode by any means. Just not what i think many of us were expecting. Where's Negan? Lydia? Is that really the end of Michonne or will she return in 10B? They never showed her with Negan's bat that we saw in the comic con teaser. Well, I guess at least we know they found the heard! LOL

Definitely a great episode I will re watch once 10B begins. Just not a great mid season finale. Now take last years mid season finale. Jesus getting killed by a whisperer. Now THAT was TV gold!

R.I.P. Siddiq
theburrus14 October 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Honestly, only a few times in all the series did a death make me sad for a bit after watching the show. In Season 8, when Dr. Carson and mostly blind Gabriel escape the Sanctuary, and are trying to get to Hilltop but at the last mm moment are recaptured. Dr. Carson goes for one savior's gun only to get shot dead in front of Gabriel who begins weeping.... That was sad.

Siddiq being a victim of the infiltrater that is Dante, well that's sad as hell again.

But I dont know how I missed it watching these seasons twice already but when you least expect, Gabriel goes to Dante's cell and stabs and slashes and stabs like I never knew he could. It was badass and I cheered the priest on. Sometimes justice comes at the right hour for the sinister.

Giving the episode a 7 for that last sequence alone making this episode worth watching.

Because it is the mid-season finale, you are giving low rating? Come on
martincalderon-8301825 November 2019
I see people dissatisfied, saying it was a good episode, but it doesn't feel like a mid-season finale, really? Surely if it were any other episode and not a mid-season finale you wouldn't criticize it so much, really it doesn't make sense.

This first part of season 10 was very good, same as this episode, there's so much stuff going on. Alexandria with what happened with Siddiq and how Rosita deals with it, everything about Dante's betrayal and Gabriel's decision, Gamma seems to want to exchange information, Daryl and others looking for the horde of Alpha, the plot of Michonne and Virgil. You realize? How much the plot advances in the right way.

Disappointing
timbirtv25 November 2019
Warning: Spoilers
After such a great buildup of dramatic tension with Dante I was hoping his arc would at least last a couple of more episodes. Additionally, the golden rule of screenwriting is show, don't tell. While the last several episodes were great, sometimes this show gets so bogged down in dialogue that you begin to tune it out. Based on the preview, I believe the mid-season premiere will be more like the episode we were expecting.

It is a true wonder that these characters survived for this long
luka4725 November 2019
Warning: Spoilers
One of the best female fighters who has a child uses brass knuckles to fight the zombies putting herself in the most dangerous situation?!? Grizzled warriors fall into a trap a child could have foreseen. Carol lets the spawn of their most fierce enemy just run away because of emotions but a few years ago she straight up murdered little girl she loved. That is not the same character. So not only are writers lazy they also don't care for character development. Greedy and lazy! The only way this series is gonna be good again is if they bring back the crew from first two seasons. We are watching a dumbed down politically correct zombie apocalypse
