This is genuinely probably one of the best episodes of the whole show for me. It was just incredible. All the people saying it was boring filler must have the attention spans of a four year old because how can you say this was boring? Yes it wasn't related to the main story arc in any way but does every episode have to be? I don't believe in the term "filler" because every episode of a show has something to contribute, be that to character or story (or both). This was a character centric episode, and a send off episode at that, and I have to believe that most people who didn't like it are just here for the fight scenes because this was just amazing stuff. Shows are supposed to be about characters, otherwise it doesn't matter how good a story is, it won't be good. Bear McCrearey produced some exceptional music, and the VFX were brilliant. I think they were VFX anyway, the Negan lineup scene made it look so realistic that I'm not even sure if it was maybe shot in advance when they were filming the season 7 premier. During that whole trip scene, I was thinking yes this is incredible but what's the point of showing what she might've become? Well I think the contrast shows who Michonne really is. The mercy she showed Virgil is who she really is. I saw this episode almost as a love story, except the other half isn't present, at least not physically. Rick's presence in the episode is certainly felt though, and we can see what an effect he's had on her and just how much he means to her. Virgil was one of those one-off characters that really makes you think about the vast effects the apocalypse has on individuals (Eastman is another that comes to mind). Just about everyone has lost someone, yet it's so interesting to see how differently different people are affected. This was an episode with a heart and full of emotion. To those saying it's ridiculous that she would abandon her children, I would say otherwise. Yes it's kinda hard to believe but this episode reminded us just how much not only she cares about Rick, but everyone cares about him. For her to go on a journey to find him is the right ending for her. The other alternative was to kill her, and if you ask me the boring thing to do would be to just kill every character that leaves the show. This was the right choice, and I think ironically, Michonne's send off was better than Rick's. Probably the best episode of the show since The Day Will Come When You Won't Be

Satisfying sendoff for Michonne with some spectacular scenes
itsame_kaia22 March 2020
Warning: Spoilers
This was another great episode in Season 10. There were some slow moments, especially at the beginning and a little in the middle, but the high points of the episode were very, very high. Michonne discovering the drawing of her and Judith was well done and her conversation with Judith later was insanely emotional. Hadn't gotten choked up like that for the show in a while, probably since the pike deaths last season.

The best part of the episode, though, was undoubtedly Michonne's 10-minute drug trip in the middle. The music was great and the recreated scenes were phenomenally done, but I especially loved seeing so many familiar faces again. Even if most of the returns were just through archive footage, they were given new context that felt like we were really seeing them again. Glenn in particular was awesome to see.

The ending was intriguing and I'm excited to see how Michonne's story continues in TWD universe. I'm glad they didn't do a repeat of Rick's sendoff by having her captured while everyone thinks she's dead; it was far more satisfying this way.

Michonne, Rick and their children are the heart of the show
tristan_1922 March 2020
Warning: Spoilers
The farewell was emotional and really heartfelt - not spectacular, but it gave justice to the character of Michonne - and the scene that stood out to me was the last conversation between Michonne and Judith. It would have been easy for the writers to mess out the departure and the last discussion of Michonne, but they managed to deliver and brought tears in my eyes, especially when Judith tells her mom she has to go looking for Rick. The back and forth was well executed and this is a scene fans will remember. Michonne also got her closure, now knowing Alpha is out of the way, and it makes sense that she'd be in a relaxed state of mind to go.

At first, I didn't really like the episode or understand what was going on, but once I got to the halfway point of the episode I was astounded. I guess, in that sense, the episode was at the image of season 10. The first half, you're left wondering if this is something worth watching and when the second half kicks, the season/episode punches in like a hammer. The payoff is surprising and especially in this episode, I didn't see coming the brilliance of the hallucinations. Of course, I expected to see some cameos or visions, like in the episode What Comes After for Rick. But what was presented was absolutely awesome and done in a really clever way. I loved the callback to the episode Clear with the orange backpack, episode in which Michonne, Carl and Rick are actually three of the four protagonists. The integration of Negan and the saviors was a delight to the eyes and the episode really showed the consequence of your actions. Do you help someone or not (Andrea, the people at the end)? Do you kill or spare (Virgil)? As we all know, Michonne always showed mercy and her choice to let Virgil live shows a lot of her personality. It's crazy to think about the guy left out on the side of the road and interesting to see it via Michonne's eyes, exploring different paths of life. Michonne hitting herself with Lucille is a VERY powerful image.

One of my favorite shots only lasted like a second, but I was really looking for a scene at the prison, when everything began for Rick and Michonne. And that plan of Rick's face made it for me. I have to say that part was freaking amazing.

As Rick's purpose was to find his family, Michonne's was to learn to let herself trust people. Her journey is depicted, as she is first hesitant to help Andrea (and finally decides not to), going on in life as a lonely person. Finally, at the end, through growth, her journey came full circle and she accepted people in her life, helping them, moving forward.

The episode didn't feel to forced and the integration of Rick's items, such as the boot, flowed quite well. This is the fourth solid episode in a row (after Stalker, Morning Star and Walk With Us), thanks to the wonderful cast and crew. I'd give this one 9.4/10. Thank you Danai. We hope for the best for you and for your character !

Fun fact : the events of the episode Clear happen in the volume What We Become in the comics. I thought it was a cool easter egg and a fitting name for the episode.

How is this a soap opera
joesloppy-2069927 March 2020
I hate when people go on and review this show every episode just to call it a soap. Literally how is this a soap? I have seen soap operas before and they look nothing at all what so ever like The Walking Dead. This episode was one of the best in the series and is criminally underrated. Danai Gurira's acting was absolutely astounding. I literally can not understand why she isn't a huge movie star. She is one of the best actors i have ever seen and she perfectly portrays someone powerful. She brings so much excitement to the screen and this episode does nothing but show that. I wish her nothing but the best and i feel nothing but grateful that she gave us this character and this amazing goodbye of an episode. This isnt a god damn soap

An acid trip on TWD??! Give it to me!
yusietagforce22 March 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Well, can't say I expected her exit to be this perfect. Thank you Angela Kang and Danai for wrapping up such a great character this good! Goodbye for now Michonne.

The whole trip scene was everything I needed. This is probably the least TWD episode of TWD, and IN A GOOD WAY! Bear McCreary outdid himself with that perfect score for the final scene. Also, can't forget to mention the amazing job done by the VFX team, specially that shot of Rick pointing his gun. Well done, everyone who worked on this episode! You did great.

You have questions. Ok. But you can't deny this was probably one of the BEST episodes of the show. 10/10 stars.
grondonamanu2 January 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Rick, Andrea, Carl, Glenn, Abraham, Sasha, each character is dead, but Angela Kang's magic brought all of them back in just one episode. Edition makes 70% of the episode, and it is magnificent. I can't stop laughing from the ones who say this is a filler episode. Is the farewell to a main character who has been in the series for 7 years a filler episode? It simply makes no sense to say that. Michonne sees what her life could have been if she wouldnt save Andrea in 2x13, and the 'hallucinations' are perfectly justified. She would have become a savior! Danai Gurira's and Jeffrey Dean Morgan's acting makes those escenes SO great! Michonne finally says goodbye from Judith and RJ, and sets out on a quest to find Rick, a plot we know will continue in the film trilogy. During the walkie-talkie talk, Judith tells her mother that the war with the whisperers was going well, and that's why Michonne decides to look for the person she loved and searched for so many years !!!! Please you can't say this doesnt make sense!! You must be objective and put yourself in that position. Anyway, in my opinion 8.0 is higly underrated. I think this episode deserves (at least) a 9. Goodbye Michonne. We will see you soon, I know we will.

Bit of a filler episode
dannylee-780827 September 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I'm a bit biased because knowing that Rick is not coming back to the TV series, I am just not anticipating much to this new storyline about finding Rick.

Michonne's trip about her becoming one of the saviors was interesting but not super relevant. Virgil storyline was hardly compelling.

Introduction to a new community seems promising but makes the show a little draggy if that makes any sense. Makes you wonder what it would take to rebuild civilization again.

Rick is close
ninjaboyballer23 March 2020
Warning: Spoilers
This episode was overall a satisfying conclusion to Michonne's run on the show and a somewhat exciting way to set up the Rick movies. Danai Gurira is great as Michonne and has some of the most emotional scenes in the episode and the guy who played Virgil was also solid in his role and did what he needed to do. I really like this episodes whole "what if" timeline scenario in which Michonne doesn't save Andrea, joins the saviors, and is killed by Rick. It overall goes to show us how far Michonne has come and what she could have become had she not done what she'd done to protect Andrea and not chosen the path that she chose. The way they edited her into past scenes was noticeable but it still made for a pretty great scene with her younger self and a great montage of the "what if"all around. There are a few things that I didn't like. Like how they just cut to Virgil saying his family was dead and that he needed Michonne's help to get their bodies back, like what? And even though I like the scene I thought it was kinda ridiculous she just found Rick's boots by chance and just assumed they were his. I also feels like this kind of brings to a halt the whisperer storyline and just feels like it's smack int the middle. And has Michonne been gone even after they've defeated the whisperers based on what Judith said? Also I want to point out that I really liked the callback to Rick's mercy thing from season 8 and it was also a really good scene

Overall it's a pretty solid episode and I will miss Michonne on the show but hopefully she'll appear in the Rick movies (if they ever come out that is).

Final rating: 8.6/10

Unpopular opinion
spikeroo-2933312 August 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Man,the low talking in this show is ridiculous at times but Michonne has got to be the worst. I need my tv at full volume to hear what she's saying so when she's having a whispering conversation with the people in another room with big solid cement block walls between them, ugh it ruins it for me. If I lived in that world around those characters, I'd be saying "what the hell are you saying. Speak up" all the time.

grisbain79-149-21786625 March 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I don't know. After all that just happened in the show, it's so like walking dead to pull the viewer away from the main plot to do a non-sequitur episode. Honestly, I thought Michonne was already off the show. And who is this Virgil guy... wait, I don't care.

A Beautiful Send-Off
ThomasDrufke23 March 2020
Warning: Spoilers
It seems there's at least one major character leaving the show every season now, and I guess that makes sense given how many seasons this show has gone on for, but it's becoming increasingly difficult to find a good story reason to write these characters off. However, I think we all knew the only fitting way to say goodbye to Michonne (for now) would be to have her go try to find Rick, thinking that he still may be alive, which of course he is.

'What We Become' was the proper sendoff this character deserve, even if it started off rather choppy and needed to leap logic here and there for it to fit together. But Danai Gurira does a wonderful job of balancing her character's strong physical presence with her desire to be a good person and not let those abilities tarnish the other. Having her final episode display her decision to help strangers when she didn't have to certainly wrapped a nice bow on her storyline from the very first time we saw her save Andrea.

And I don't think any of us didn't love the idea of the show picturing her as a Savior if she took a different path. The way they intertwined old scenes with new was clever and helped the audience take a walk through memory lane while still looking ahead at Michonne's journey to come. It's always important to remember where someone came from to understand where they may be going.

9.0/10.

Worthy send off for Michonne, Danai Gurira gives a phenomenal performance in this great but not perfect episode
Holt34423 March 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Michonne is... Badass. Danai Gurira absolutely killed it it in this week's episode! The writers and showrunner gave her an episode dedicated to her character and the future of the beloved character, also something unique and unpredictable, overall an mpressive episode. This episode alone shows Danai's acting capabilities, how she's worthy to be a lead actress in a huge motion picture. The music is again great, giving us a suspenseful and powerful score that fits nicely with the episode. It was unpredictable, not really how I pictured her final episode to be but it worked. I noticed a lot of people giving this episode an 10/10 but I'm not feeling it, for the character and everything Michonne related I was pleased but it's far from a perfect episode because for example some stupid writing that was there to move on the plot quicker. Sharat Raju did a good job at directing the episode, I really enjoyed the editing and cinematography that the episode had. Again, not a superb episode but one that will be remembered because of the acting and the Katana wielding character known as Michonne.

All the pieces Matter. This episode is Dainai Gurira's exit from the show but will return in the upcoming trilogy of movies, was it a worthy exit? Yes. They built up the transition nicely with her joining the movies and returning to Rick Grimes. I can't wait for what's to come, the bigger picture.

Goodbye Danai
davisond-9573022 March 2020
Warning: Spoilers
This season has been great and now the storyline has took a quick pause to give us fans a send off for the zombie slaying Queen Michonne. This episode does not affect the pace whatsoever and fits quite perfect. Some fans thought her exit occurred in Episode 8 as we haven't seen her since but don't worry she's back in an episode the viewers will probably never forget.

Of course Virgil shouldn't have been trusted and Michonne should have known better but oh well, there is no weapons and his family are already dead. That's right, he dragged her away from her family and friends to do what he couldn't and that being to put down his deceased wife and children. We are not sure how this happened but we are given hints the people who took Rick were involved somehow.

Michonne is locked in a room and finds out there is other trapped survivors, Virgil's work colleagues. He drugs Michonne and she hallucinates in all the bad ways. She sees a zombie Siddiq, becomes the hitchhiker from season 3, joins Negan and the Saviours, Kills Glenn and Heath and is then killed by Rick and Daryl. She eventually escapes and finds evidence that Rick is alive.

She discovers his boots and a phone with a drawing of her and Judith. She calls for Judith and RJ on the radio where she reveals he could be alive and it's a really cute moment. She finds two injured survivors who are trying to make it another group before they leave them behind and Michonne helps them, this group I believe also is or has a connection to Rick.

Overall from this review the episode may not sound as interesting but trust it really is.

We get emotional moments, a lot of zombie action, a lot of plot for future storylines connecting Rick back into the fold and the exit of one of the greatest characters on the show.

Filler episode at its best
kamron_croucher16 December 2022
Warning: Spoilers
This episode is rated too high. This felt like a low tier filler episode. I would have been fine with it had we gotten some other characters but having one entire episode with michone, who is kind of a weak actress, man was it boring until the end. Why make a season 22 episodes if you're going to give us low quality filler bull crap. I hate when shows have weird hallucinations, what if scenarios and past people showing up who arnt actually there. It felt like low quality cable TV show that is mostly made up of filler episodes.

The best part of the episode was the last 10 or so mins where we finally see the main story progress. It just felt like a pointless episode where the story didn't advance until the end.

A respectable sendoff for a remarkable character
nona-sui25 March 2020
Warning: Spoilers
:::::SPOILERS BELOW:::

Regrettably have not seen enough of Danai as Michonne this season almost forgot what she can do when she sinks her teeth into material. Danai was astounding. I had trepidation surrounding the set up as I have a hard time believing Michonne would wander off with a stranger, especially after the events of s9, but I understand that they needed to get her departure rolling so I decided to suspend belief and accept she sacrificed her safety in order to retrieve weapons to beat the whisperers. Danai seamlessly flowed between the emotions of suspicion, annoyance, concern, anguish, anger, happiness, sadness, joy, fear and all the in between. She was astonishing, I was mesmerized and next thing I knew the episode was nearing the end. Moreover I loved seeing the faces of all the old characters we loved and lost, production expertly seamed them together with the present. They really wanted to give her a fitting end.

By far my favorite part was her conversations with her children. RJ is another character we don't see enough of and he was adorable and had me emotional calling himself little brave man after his daddy Rick. Cailey Fleming, whoa, that little actress is fantastic, the extraordinary chemistry between she and Danai I haven't seen since between Danai and Andy Lincoln. A hard to swallow is Michonne leaving her children, but with the motivation being Rick, coupled with Judith reassuring her the whisperers were no longer a threat, reminding the audience that the only way Rick Grimes wouldn't not have returned to his family is because something was wrong and encouraging her mom to go bring him back, there could be no better reason. And Michonne with such grace and selflessness until the end helping the strangers along the way seeing & hearing the call back to when she first met Rick and Carl and how they helped her ending the episode was sublime.

I'm going to miss Danai and I'm going to miss Michonne. I hope this isn't a final farewell & we see Michonne again reunited with Rick & their kids.

Almost 100% filler. Adds nothing to moving the story arc forward, other than a goodbye. If you watch the first 5 minutes and the last 5 minutes you will be completely caught up and save yourself aggravation and time.

Goodbye Michone.
ohmap-977-6648103 April 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I found the episode interesting because it took Michone full circle. She departs the Walking Dead like we found her: Walking along the highway with two defanged zombies in tow, and again she helped someone along the way. Some have complained that Michone went looking for Rick and should have returned to her kids. OK...I can see that! However, this was Michone's last episode and the writers obviously wanted her to metaphorically ride off into the sunset. It's like old cowboys don't die, they just ride off into the sunset. We...the fans...are left to fill in the pieces however we want (unless she gets a movie role.)

Judith asked her to go recue her dad in case he was still alive, and that is where we saw the last of one of the best characters on the Walking Dead. I will personally miss her, and wonder how much longer the show will last.

Best episode of season
rsmith-8166422 March 2020
Warning: Spoilers
There was some episodes this season I didn't like, some I liked but still didn't hold my complete attention. This episode changed that. I could not turn from the tv and it left me wanting more the moment it ended. It was incredible.

At first I didn't like How Michonne was hallucinating because I thought they were going with a magic Island twist. But once I realized it was because he drugged her I fully embraced it. And I loved the alternate world twist. It was executed beautifully.

The scene between Judith and Michonne made me tear up. I also loved the scene showing Michonne at the prison fence when Rick decided to help her. I feel like her character came full circle.

We got clues to Rick and his upcoming movie and world beyond. I am even more excited for those now. The music was great. And Danai Gurira's acting was amazing!!!

Also, for the review titled Andrea I think you're a bit confused. Laurie Holden didn't film for this episode. They just used the old footage of Andrea leaving the farm. And they lightened it up to day time. Also, Michonne never killed Andrea in season 3. Andrea shot herself after she was bit.
