The major TV studios have all but closed out their business with the broadcast networks for the 2019-2020 season.
In all, 35 new series have been ordered across the Big 4 and The CW, with one or two projects still outstanding as potential contenders for midseason pickups. The union of Disney’s ABC Studios and the 20th Century Fox TV operation in March made Disney Television Studios the largest supplier of new broadcast TV series with a total of 14 new series orders, although the studios operated separately until the merger was formally completed on March 20.
With the buying mostly done, here is a breakdown of where Hollywood’s dominant TV suppliers stand at the Big Four and CW at the close of the 2019 development season. Should any late pick ups be made, this post will be updated.

The “American Idol” revival has been renewed for a third season at ABC. The show’s second season — at least on its new home network — finale will air Sunday, May 19.
Offers have been made for host Ryan Seacrest and judges Katy Perry, Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan to return to the FremantleMedia North America-produced series, an individual with knowledge of the renewal tells TheWrap. While there is no word yet on if any or all of them will be back for the show’s third season, the insider tells us ABC is hoping for the team’s return.
The second season of the “Idol” revival, which premiered at midseason, is currently averaging a 1.7 rating in the advertiser-coveted adults 18-49 demographic and 8.9 million viewers, while Monday nights put up a 1.5 rating and 8.3 million viewers, according to the “most current” data from Nielsen, which includes a week’s worth of delayed viewing where available.

It was a little stressful and down to the wire as all of Sony Pictures TV’s new series pickups and some of its renewals did not close until the weekend before the upfronts, but the indie studio ultimately saw four of its six pilots picked up, drama For Life and comedy United We Fall at ABC and drama Lincoln and comedy Indebted at NBC. Excluding straight-to-series orders, that is the studio’s strongest conversion ratio in almost a decade.
Additionally, Sony TV saw all of its broadcast scripted series get renewed; its broadcast tally, including scripted and unscripted series, is 11 series on ABC, NBC and CBS.
That is with the studio, which last year did not get a new broadcast series but landed a series order for its NBC pilot La’s Finest at Spectrum, scaling back on broadcast development, developing about 50% fewer scripts with a targeted approach.

“Whiskey Cavalier” has been canceled by ABC after one season, TheWrap has learned. The Scott Foley and Lauren Cohan-led drama debuted at midseason and is set to air what will now be its series finale on May 22.
Studio Warner Bros. Television intends to shop the series — which originally debuted with a sneak peek after the 2019 Oscars before moving to its Wednesday 10 p.m. time slot — elsewhere, an individual with knowledge of the cancellation tells TheWrap.
Here is the description for the now-canceled drama: Following an emotional breakup, tough but tender FBI super-agent Will Chase (codename: Whiskey Cavalier) — played by Foley — is assigned to work with CIA operative Francesca “Frankie” Trowbridge (codename: Fiery Tribune) — played by Cohan. Together, they lead an interagency team of flawed, funny and heroic spies — including Will’s best friend, behavioral scientist Susan Sampson and jittery genius Edgar Standish — who periodically save the world — and each...

ABC is preparing to unveil a third-season pickup for “American Idol” at its 2019-2020 season schedule presentation to advertisers on Tuesday, but the lineup behind the judges’ table is still a work in progress.
ABC and FremantleMedia North America have only recently started negotiations on possible new talent deals for “Idol” judges Katy Perry, Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan. Perry made headlines in 2017 when she signed on for an eye-popping $25 million a year.
It’s understood that ABC has told Fremantle it hopes to make “Idol” a long-term network franchise but only if the current cost structure can come down. “Idol” has performed credibly but not spectacularly for ABC this season. ABC brought Fremantle’s durable competition franchise back to U.S. primetime in 2018, less than two years after the show wrapped a storied 14-year run on Fox in 2016.

NBC executives explained how their Allison Tolman drama pilot, “Emergence,” ended up being ordered to series ABC.
“We had an abundance of choice,” Paul Telegdy, co-chairman, NBC Entertainment, told TheWrap during a conference call with reporters on Sunday. “‘Emergence’ is a great show, but one that we couldn’t find a home for at NBC. We’re delighted it’s found a future at ABC.”
“Emergence” was surprisingly picked up to series by ABC on Saturday, joining the network’s other new series “The Baker and The Beauty,” “For Life,” “Mixed-ish,” “United We Fall” and the Untitled Cobie Smulders Project. The drama, which comes from ABC Studios, stars Tolman, Alexa Swinton, Ashley Aufderheide, Robert Bailey Jr., Zabryna Guevara, Donald Faison and Clancy Brown. It is from Michele Fazekas and Tara Butters, with Paul McGuigan on board as director.

ABC has picked up to series hourlong romantic comedy The Baker and the Beauty, based on the hit Israeli format. Starring Victor Rasuk and Nathalie Kelley in the title roles, the Notting Hill-esque Baker and the Beauty hails from The Brave creator Dean Georgaris, David Frankel, Keshet Studios, Universal TV and ABC Studios.
For the second time in three years, writer-creator Georgaris received two pilot orders in the same cycle this year with NBC’s Bluff City Law and ABC’s The Baker and the Beauty. In 2017, he also had pilots at NBC (The Brave) and ABC (Las Reinas) with the NBC one going to series. He did one better this year as both of his pilots went to series. The drama pilot “Emergence” has been ordered to series at ABC, though the project had originally been developed at NBC.
The series, which hails from ABC Studios, centers around a police chief (Allison Tolman) who takes in a young child (Alexa Swinton) that she finds near the site of a mysterious accident who has no memory of what has happened. The investigation draws her into a conspiracy larger than she ever imagined, and the child’s identity is at the center of it all.
In addition to Tolman and Swinton, the series also stars Owain Yeoman, Ashley Aufderheide, Robert Bailey Jr., Zabryna Guevara, Donald Faison, and Clancy Brown. Michele Fazekas and Tara Butters will write and executive produce. Paul McGuigan directed the pilot and is an executive producer.
Sources say that ABC was somewhat dissatisfied with its own development slate this year and moved on “Emergence” after NBC passed on the project.

NBC has picked up the drama “Lincoln” and the comedies “Perfect Harmony” and “Indebted” for the 2019-2020 season.
Both “Lincoln” and “Indebted” hail at least in part from Sony Picture Television, with “Lincoln” a co-production between Sony, Universal Television, and Keshet and “Indebted” being solely a Sony production. The news comes after Sony recently scored two new series pick ups at ABC with comedy “United We Fall” and drama “For Life,” while ABC also renewed the Sony-produced “The Goldbergs” and “Schooled.” “United We Fall,” “Schooled,” and “For Life” are co-productions between Sony and ABC Studios.

Adam F. Goldberg is leaving his longtime home at Sony Pictures Television.
The writer and executive producer behind ABC’s “The Goldbergs,” which has just been picked up for a seventh season, is moving to ABC Studios under a four-year overall deal. Goldberg’s deal with Sony is set to expire in June, at which time he will move to the Disney lot in Burbank.
In addition to his work on “The Goldbergs” this year, Goldberg also launched the spinoff “Schooled” with Mark Firek. That series performed well enough to earn it a renewal for a second season. Sony is the sole studio behind “The Goldbergs,” while “Schooled” is a co-production between Sony and ABC. ABC’s Big 80’s comedy series The Goldbergs and its 90’s spinoff Schooled are both coming back for another go-round. The network has renewed The Goldbergs for a seventh season, and Schooled for a sophomore run.
We hear the renewal of The Goldbergs, which was never in doubt, was tied with a Season 2 pickup off spinoff, Schooled, which is rumored to be for 13 episodes. Both series come from Sony Pictures TV.
With the two pickups, indie Sony TV will have 7 series on ABC next season, hit medical drama The Good Doctor, The Goldbergs, Schooled, the newly picked-up drama For Life and comedy United We Fall, as well as reality shows Shark Tank and Pyramid.
Negotiations between ABC and Sony TV for both The Goldbergs and Schooled had been going on for months with typical haggling over business terms between an unaffiliated network and studio.

“For Life” is a fictional serialized legal and family drama inspired by the life of Isaac Wright Jr. about a prisoner who becomes a lawyer, litigating cases for other inmates while fighting to overturn his own life sentence for a crime he didn’t commit, per ABC. ABC has picked up an additional drama and comedy series for the 2019-2020 season.
The network has ordered hourlong legal drama For Life (fka Hank Steinberg/Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson Project) and multi-camera family comedy United We Fall. Both hail from Sony Pictures TV, which will co-produce with ABC Studios.
United We Fall and For Life join comedy mixed-ish and drama Untitled Cobie Smulders (aka Stumptown), both from ABC Studios, to bring ABC’s new series for next season to four so far.
Along with Untitled Cobie Smulders, which was picked up to series on Wednesday, For Life had been a frontrunner among ABC’s drama pilots. It’s late April. Normally at this time TV business’ attention is focused almost squarely on the broadcast pilot season as it is heading into its final stages — network pilot screenings followed by new series pickups. But this is not a normal time. With the WGA-Ata standoff completely dominating the Hollywood conversation following the mass firing of agents by writers, it has been hard for anyone to focus on pilot season. Here is what I hear is hot at the networks. Keep in mind that the information is still incomplete as not all pilots have been delivered to the networks. We will have a fuller picture at the end of next week when most of the pilots will have screened.

Exclusive: Loudermilk‘s Will Sasso and Christina Vidal (Training Day) are set as leads opposite Jane Curtin in United We Fall, ABC’s multicamera family comedy from Making History creator Julius Sharpe, Seth Gordon, Sony Pictures TV and ABC Studios.

However, since having their second kid, they can barely make it out the door.
