Anatomy of a Murder (1959)
Still riveted by this film 40 years later!
This is certainly one of the most compelling courtroom dramas ever made. The cast is without exception marvelous. The contrast of Jimmy Stuart and George C Scott was great and the sluttishness that Lee Remick radiated was splendid as was the ambivalent feeling that Ben Gazzara made you feel from the first moment about his character, with Eve Arden as the cherry on the sundae. And of course, Joseph Welch playing Joseph Welch as the judge was worth the price of admission alone. For those of you who did not sit through the entire Army-McCarthy hearings live on TV in the 1954, it may be difficult to understand how a short bald quiet lawyer from Boston destroyed Joe McCarthy in the eyes of the world when everyone else had failed, and few had even attempted. But watching him in this movie makes it clear how he did it. What a giant he was, and what a brilliant idea on Preminger's part to cast him. And the whole issue of rape which was daring to present on the screen then, is as valid and real and urgent today as it was then.
Johnny Stecchino (1991)
Hysterically funny. Begnini is a comic genius
I laughed till my ribs hurt. Not only is the farcical script marvelous, but as a physical comic Begnini has got to be in the top ten in the history of film.
