Half Baked (1998)
Weed addicts try to get their friend out of jail, by selling weed.
11 August 1998
As the movies enhancement smoker would say " Have you ever written a movie? Have you ever written a movie while smoking weed?" This movie was so bizzare and trippy that it's writers must have been high on something, and low on intelligence, when they wrote it. It was mildly entertaining, but not that funny. Besides a laugh here and there and a few fun guest stars, there was not much in this movie worth watching. However, David Chappelle did give a good performance as the narrator/smartest of the four friends.

On a scale of 1-20, Half Baked gets a strong 6.

The Right to Remain Silent (1996 TV Movie)
Rookie cop gets a look at several diverse characters who are accused of varying crimes and all have interesting stories.

An intresting movie to say the least. It is a montage of different stories; some funny, some intriguing, and some poingent. Definitely worth renting if you're looking for something offbeat or are trying to teach some morality /ethics class. By giving unconventional looks at controversial issues, such as euthanasia, drunk driving, and AIDS discrimination, as well as several others, it shows that nothing in the world is black and white, but often somewhere "in the grey area." The film has a very good cast. Only a couple of major stars, but a lot of recognizable faces, who are enjoyable to watch.

On a scale of 1-20, The Right To Remain Silent racks up a 12.

Dark City (1998)
10/10
Man wakes up with no memory in a mysterious city controlled by alien strangers who can alter physical reality.
10 August 1998
When I first saw the previews for this I was worried that it would be a gory cult movie along the lines of Clive Barker's Lord of Illusions, but decided to take a chance on it and was not disappointed. It was smart, well thought out, ungory and an amazing visual feast. A movie that is as mysterious as it is exciting, it keeps you guessing about the secrets of the city. Good background music and strong performances, by William Hurt, Jennifer Connely, Kiefer Sutherland and Rufus Sewell, helped to make this a very entertaining movie that grabs you at the beginning and doesn't let go until the credits start to roll.

On a scale of 1-20, Dark City is a strong 16.

A group of liberal, graduate students decide they can make the world a better place by poisoning people who are evil after they accidentally kill a racist jerk.

One of the most under-rated movies ever, The Last Supper is an incredibly original movie that works on so many levels. Vey few people have seen this movie, which makes it a great one to rent for company when you need a can't miss movie. I have never shown this movie to someone who didn't like it. It's biggest weakness is a lack of consistency in the type of movie it tries to be. One scene will have you laughing, while the next one will have you on the edge of your seat. However, despite the changing tempo it is a great flick that you could be thinking about for days. It does not try to shove an easy answer in your face, but leaves you to think about wether they were doing the right thing or not. The movie is made even better by some great performances, especially by Courtney Vance, Ron Pearlman, and Cameron Diaz, and some great music that really adds to the effect of the movie.

On a scale of 1-20, The Last Supper gets an 18.

Rocky (1976)
10/10
A chump boxer from Philladelphia gets a shot at the title and tries to woo a local, shy girl.
10 August 1998
One of the greatest movies ever made. This is the classic story of an under-achiever who has a chance to fulfill his dream. Written by Sylvester Stalone in three days, it is loosely based on a fight Stalone saw between the unheralded Chuck Wepner and Muhammad Ali. The first of five Rocky movies, this one is just as much of a love story as it is a story about the triumph of the human spirit. Rocky tries to make his best friends awkward sister fall in love with him. He is no Don Juan, but he tries earnestly to show her that his love is true. It is the complete package; a good story, good acting, and good music.

On a scale of 1-20 Rocky gets an 18.
