Too many flaws to appreciate fully
19 May 2024
Warning: Spoilers
I'm giving this movie 7 stars out of ten even though I thought the story had way too many places where I had to suspend my disbelief.

I liked the direction and the cinematography, but seriously...

  • How is it the general public is looking for bank robbers and the getaway vehicle but the police arent?

  • When you're a criminal taking people hostage, why would you leave your hostages with a variety of weapons?

  • If you're going to go in guns a blazing into a restaurant to save hostages, why wouldn't you look to your left where the criminals are sitting in the restaurant?

Given all these major plot holes. I still liked the movie - but seriously??

Manhunt (2024)
6/10
Good cinematography, but kinda boring and the acting is bad
16 March 2024
Man, this show about tracking down Lincoln's assassin John Wilkes Booth was kind of a snoozefest. You'd think with such a dramatic historical event as the backdrop, they could've cooked up a more exciting cat-and-mouse chase. But instead, Manhunt feels super drawn out and sluggish.

If you're a hardcore history buff who geeks out on the Lincoln assassination, maybe you'll like all the period minutiae. For the rest of us, Manhunt is just a plodding, tedious missed opportunity to really dramatize and modernize this famous pursuit for the TV audience. Not the worst show ever, but definitely a bit of a snoozer.

Very formulaic
25 December 2023
In an era dominated by the cinematic spectacle of mega-budget productions, I can't help but question the hundreds of millions of dollars and thousands of hours towards films like Rebel Moon. It raises a question about the state of contemporary filmmaking - a realm seemingly entrapped in the formulaic clutches of predictable narratives.

The lamentation echoes: What has become of the fertile ground where original ideas sprouted, nurtured by writers who dared to traverse uncharted territories of imagination? The current cinematic landscape appears to be a desolate space, bereft of the daring minds that once breathed life into innovative concepts.

Gone are the days when directors aspired to propel the medium forward, pioneering new narrative techniques and visual storytelling. Rebel Moon, rather than breaking new ground, seems to fall into the shadow of nostalgia, trying to expand upon things by copying them?

The disheartening realization persists - where are the auteurs who once embarked on a journey to redefine the boundaries of cinema, to challenge both themselves and their audiences? Rebel Moon becomes a symbolic epitome of an industry seemingly entangled in the allure of familiar tropes, forsaking the spirit of exploration that once defined its essence.

Perhaps, in the search for blockbuster success, the industry has momentarily overlooked the vital spark that ignites when originality collides with artistic expression. As audiences yearn for narratives that transcend the mundane, one can only hope that the cinematic realm rediscovers its appetite for risk-taking and the untamed territories of creativity.

A bit over the top, but a great movie
8 August 2023
The Story of Luke is a great movie depicting what it's like to feel like you don't fit in.

Even though the characters all seemed to be "over the top", I think that was intentional so it could depict some of the characters in exaggerated situations so we could get some humour out of situations that many people go through every day.

If they didn't portray the characters that way, I think the movie wouldn't have been half as funny or insightful to how the characters felt. It can be difficult to portray thoughts and emotions on screen, so this method works well once you understand it's doing that.

For instance, Seth Green's character seemed cruel and punishing until you realize it's exaggerated, DBC then you realize how hilarious it is that he himself was going through the same emotional struggles.

Overall this is a great movie once you get the stage being set for this story.

Stan Lee (2023)
2/10
A sales pitch and an incomplete portrayal
31 July 2023
This movie, left me very disappointed because it failed to really describe the life of this iconic figure. While it carried the name of Stan Lee, the narrative seemed to be tailored to cater to the interests of the producers or the streaming channel publishing it rather than offering an in-depth exploration of the man himself.

I had hoped the film would shed light on the lesser-known aspects of Stan Lee's life, particularly the challenges he faced due to people taking advantage of him and attempting to claim ownership of his creative work. Unfortunately, these crucial elements were glossed over or omitted entirely, leaving a significant gap in understanding the man's life.

One of the best traits of Stan Lee was his kind and forgiving nature, which often made him overlook the harsh realities of the business world. This quality, while endearing, unfortunately made him vulnerable to manipulation by those driven by greed and self-interest. The movie missed a crucial opportunity to delve into this aspect of his personality, which would have provided a deeper appreciation of his character.

Stan Lee's contributions to the world of comic books and superheroes revolutionized the entertainment industry, yet his personal struggles with deceptive individuals were equally compelling. By neglecting to portray these challenges, the movie failed to give audiences a real understanding of the man behind Marvel.

Despite the movie's shortcomings, it did manage to touch on some positive aspects of Stan Lee's life, but that's all it was.

Stan Lee had the potential to be a compelling and insightful story, but it fell short by focusing on a limited and curated narrative. The movie did not do justice to the complex and multifaceted man that Stan Lee was, and it missed an opportunity to shed light on the challenges he faced and the impact he had on the world of storytelling and imagination. While it may serve as an introduction to Stan Lee's legacy for some, it ultimately leaves much to be desired for those who sought a more comprehensive and honest portrayal of the man who deserved better recognition for his contributions.

Missed opportunities
19 February 2023
Hello, Tomorrow is a show that promises a glimpse into a retro future 50s era world. Unfortunately, this show fails to deliver on its premise in almost every way imaginable.

First and foremost, the plot is incredibly dull and uninspired. The execution of the story is so lackluster that it failed to capture me and my wife's attention. The show tries to be clever by throwing in some retro future elements, but these only serve to further confuse a fairly boring story set in this alternate timeline.

The only reason I'm giving it 4 stars is for the great set designs and imagination of the retro tech.

The performances are wooden and lack any real emotional depth. The characters are one-dimensional and faied to connect with me in any meaningful way.

Furthermore, the steampunk aesthetic, which is supposed to be one of the show's main draws, is completely wasted. It feels like the showrunners just threw in a few gears and gadgets to make it look like a retro futuristic world without really understanding what the genre is all about.

This is a prime example of a show that had potential but squandered it through a lackluster plot, and a failure to understand its own genre.

One of the best works ever on TV
7 January 2023
This series has to be one of the best television series ever made for tv.

Besides how accurate it seems in relation to the struggle of the pioneers founding the country, or the love between family and how to survive a wild frontier, it demonstrates how perseverance and dreams can propel a person to do things seemingly impossible.

The writing and direction in this series has to be some of the best I've seen in a very long time.

My only hope is that it gets recognized for this in the upcoming awards seasons and that there is a second season... however unlikely that might be, considering they already have the 1923 series as a sequel.

Almost unwatchable
23 November 2022
Although the writing of this series could be great, it's almost unwatchable with the bouncing camera.

The cinematography is so terrible that it gives me a headache trying to pay attention to the story.

I'm sure the directors had something to do with the stylistic design decisions, so this "fault" should be shared between the directors and the cinematographers.

How can anyone concentrate on anything when every shot is a closeup without any seemingly stable camera tripod.

It wouldn't surprise me if they even added camera shake in post production.

I really hate having to give a show a rating when I didn't watch the entire season, but how can anyone do that when they make it so difficult to pay attention to the characters and the story?

Complete failure if you ask me. I gave it two stars for the great acting.

Second season way better than the first season
22 November 2022
Although I found the first season interesting, I agree with most of the reviewers that it was way too long and drawn out - and very repetitive. They should redo that season and rerelease it to live up to the second season.

The second season was ten times better, much less repetitive, and they were smart enough to keep it to 6 episodes.

I originally rated the first season a 2 because of it's major flaws but the second season was profoundly interesting and insightful, especially in the last few episodes. Therefore, I changed my rating to a 10 because it was that good. The first season wasn't a 10 but the second season made up for it.

Seeing Nancy and others' inside take on what happened really helps us understand how people can get caught up in a cult like atmosphere and why it takes a lot of people to convince the few that something was, and still is, seriously wrong with Raniere.

I don't want to give anything away, but the last episode was heartbreaking. I really hope Nancy is able to get part of her life back at some point and have a real relationship with someone to see what it can be like.

Good movie but...
13 September 2022
This was a nice movie to pass the time, but the story and direction didn't give the main actor much to say or do to become a likeable leading man.

There were some interesting concepts in the movie, but they were unrealized. Hopefully, they consider this for future Hallmark movies...

The main actress was great, as was the co-starring actress.

If it wasn't for thewoodennacting by the leading man, this could've been a much better movie. Unfortunately, I lost interest half way through and decided to write this review.

IMDB needs to show a character count if they expect all reviews to be at least six hundred characters...

One of the most interesting documentaries ever
30 July 2022
This show is definitely a unique and multifaceted study of the psychology of fear, habits, obsession and how to overcome thoughts that prevent you from moving forward in your life.

Also, as the story moves on from episode to episode you are trying to determine ways it may take turns and what flaws are inherent in the experiment.

In essence the genius of this show is that Nathan is essentially taking the viewers to experience the exact same thing as his subjects.

I'm still trying to process this, and it's challenging to do when you can only see one episode every week or two.

More to be learned about human psychology...

What's with the jerky cameras? Impossible to watch
19 June 2022
What is with so many American shows that they can't use a camera without purposefully bouncing it around to create tension?

All it does is give me a headache and make it impossible to watch.

Getting past that to actually enjoy the rest of the show was virtually impossible.

Jason Reitman is an amazing Director
23 January 2022
Jason Reitman again proves that he is an amazing Director and writer.

This is like an updated version of Goonies, Close Encounters, and the best of the Ghostbusters franchises merged to make an even better whole.

The team here perfectly captures the feelings and mood of the originals, and even makes it better by adding a whole story about family and parenthood to the mix.

I really wish he would reboot more franchises like this instead of the constant money-grabbing sequels that so many studios do to end the amazing movies that all of us loved and adored from the past.

Even his dedication to Harold Ramis (another amazing Director) was very heartfelt and touching.

Thanks for making this!

It may have been good, but...
29 December 2021
Normally, I don't like to review movies if I don't have much good to say about it, but this one is so divisive I had to add my two bits.

This movie isn't great. In fact, it's really boring and there's not much of a story or a conclusion.

Normally, I like some arthouse movies, especially when they are science fiction or fantasy, and this one had my interest.

Unfortunately, there is so much repetitiveness and a ton of story gaps in this that I think it's just plain sloppy and boring.

Things happen without explanation, and the camera angles are so poor as to not even know what is going on, so in the end the scene is completely pointless.

I get that some "arthouse" movies are given extra credit, and I did give this one two extra stars for that because it's breaking traditional molds.

My issue is that it breaks so many molds to completely shatter it into something useless and unrecognizable.

Scarlett Johansson and the soundtrack were the only good things in this movie. The camera work sucked, the editing was non-sensical, the story was non-existent, and the ending did nothing to illuminate the meaning of the entire movie - therefore rendering it pointless.

I hope someone, or no-one, takes this and inspires the next great sci-fi movie. It could either be great, or completely waste people's time.

Completely unrealistic
18 September 2021
Any 911 operator doing that stuff on the job would have been immediately fired. End of movie.

Did the producers not even talk to the 911 management to see what would actually be plausible in this movie?

Either way, a really boring movie. Jake's overacting can't save the script either.

Ummm...
18 July 2021
Normally, I don't write really negative reviews but this movie deserves a mention.

The acting and cinematography was great. Everything else sucked.

Nonsensical story with no plot, no real science, and no explanation where and how they get wind, hay bails, or a door to nowhere that looks exactly like the first place.

I fully expected an ending, but suffered through it without any conclusion.

A unique love story on many levels
15 June 2021
Holiday Affair is one of the best romances I've ever watched.

It's not a typical play by the numbers romance between two people, which makes it unique. In fact it demonstrates many different kinds of love in one film.

Highly recommended.

The Big Sick has to be one of the most emotional comedies of the last couple of decades.

I've watched it several times, and each time I appreciate it more and more.... I really wish this team would make more movies like this.

It's a classic.

How do movies like this get financed?
2 May 2021
Normally, I don't like writing negative reviews, but seriously, how do movies with no story or without proper camera tripods get financed?

The computer generated scenes were nice and smooth and effective, and then they cut to people running around and jump cuts from one bad fight scene to another.

Seriously?

Amazing deep movie that needs to be watched twice
6 April 2021
The Coen brothers are amazing directors... and this movie shows more evidence why.

The short stories are heavy on the themes of life and death, and illustrate a variety of psychological attitudes of us all.

I don't want to give any spoilers, but I recommend you watch it once and then think about the analogies of live and death in each episode.

The more I read about it, and people's theories about it all, makes me realize more and more about the multitude of layers in these stories and the screenplay. Especially for someone like me that has some personal experiences that are similar to the characters in this masterpiece.

Amazing work by amazing craftsmen...

Resident Alien (2021– )
10/10
Definitely one of the best series of the past 10 years
2 April 2021
Resident Alien definitely has to be one of my favourite series from the 2000's.

Much like Big Bang Theory, it has a twinge of science, and it also gets really serious sometimes tackling subjects about fitting into society, racism, and other psychologies of your mind.

It even has some murder mystery twinges, and the science fiction aspects are all done with a bit of tongue in cheek humour.

On top of all that, it gets very emotional sometimes, and gets me teared up considering whether the alien will fall in love, or decide to obliterate the planet of all life (not a spoiler, because this is something that comes out early in the episodes).

Each episode has some forward momentum, and advances the plot! Unlike many series that try to keep each episode endlessly giving you a carrot to come and watch the next episode, this series actually gives you a full meal and makes you want to come back to the next one to see what's on the plate going forward.

I was sad to see the series end after 10 episodes, but I can say the ending of the season was perfect in that it closed off some potentially frustrating endings that could have transpired, and it only makes you want to watch season 2 even more. Looking forward to the possibilities...

I'm so excited to see it has been renewed for Season 2, and look forward to one of the best series on TV ever.

Great film - a touch of the coast with a great set of laughs
30 December 2020
I really enjoyed this movie. A great surprise.

Many times it was laugh out loud funny! The writing and direction was spot on, and the cinematography was great as well. I'm surprised I never heard of it before, and it's been out for 7 years.

If you're looking for a nice small town story with a few laughs, I'd highly recommend this!

It reminded me a lot of Local Hero, so if you liked that movie, you'll surely like this one.

Kinda funny, but completely unrealistic
26 November 2020
This movie had a lot of potential. I think had they spent more time on the script and tried to make the story more plausible it would have been a great movie.

This would probably make a great stage play because these types of coincidental encounters are a bit more believable watching with a laughing crowd. Most likely, the writer probably was used to watching plays and writing for that type of audience.

The music was very repititive and many times tried way to hard to influence the audience to cue them what should be ahppening next. What that ended up doing was to leave a lot of the mystery about what might happen next disappear. For instance, any time talk started to veer in a serious direction he piano came out, and when something was supposed to be funny it seemed like slapstick music.

All those things being said, I stuck through watching it because I liked the concept of the story.

6 September 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Nobody in their right mind would send these misfits and psychologically fragile folks into space together.

Not being honest years before they leave, and not preparing their daughter that their mother will most likely never come back?

Sowing discontent before they even leave Earth?

Technical issues before they even leave for Mars?

Hidden agendas?

The commander deciding to "turn around and go home" because her husband is in the hospital and her daughter needs her back?

More technical problems before it gets to the point of no return?

This has to be one of the worst space dramas I've witnessed. They obviously took a war drama and threw in the space aspect at the end before considering whether these scenarios even make sense or would happen on such a dangerous and psychologically-sensitive mission.

I hope this doesn't affect the possibility of a really good space drama in the future.
