Don't Hang Up (1974)
Don't rent this film!
Talk about dull: this southern-made "horror film" seems to reach >its highest peak of unintentional humor when the camera repeatedly zooms in on the killer's hidden face making a phone call to his next victim. Film looks as if it was shot on a $100 budget. Shame, shame, shame.
False Face (1977)
Probably better known as "Scalpel"
This film is available on video as "Scalpel", and it's quite interesting. Lansing is a crazed plastic surgeon who makes a disfigured dancer look like his missing daughter to claim a $2 million dollar inheritance. However, things get complicated when the real daughter reappears. Some interesting plot twists and decent acting makes this mystery worth a look.
Welcome to Arrow Beach (1973)
Bizarre cannibalism flick
This little-seen horror drama features Harvey in his final film appearance. He is a war veteran who lives along a California beach who kills people and supposedly eats them (though he is never seen doing it in the film). Foster is a hippie chick who, while staying with Harvey and his sister one evening, finds him hacking up a corpse in the basement. Good cast helps this slow-moving thriller, as well as some imaginative photography and editing. But, LOU RAWLS singing the theme song?? Come on!
Dracula's Dog (1977)
Film does not bite
This may sound like some hokey, cheaply-done horror film, and granted, it IS, but one has to give thanks to director Band and a the cast for keeping things lively throughout. Second-rate in most departments, however.
La tumba de la isla maldita (1973)
Barely tolerable
Pretty terrible film about a vampire woman terrorizing a community. About the only saving merits are the always understated Prine and an interesting conclusion.
Three on a Meathook (1972)
Terrible
Definitely the low point of your video rental hobby should you pick this one up off the shelves, it is a pseudo-Psycho tale about a looney father and his off-balanced son who kill the women that stay at their house one night. Even the prerequisital nudity and spotty gore doesn't save this mess of a film, done in by S-L-O-W spots, bad acting, you name it
Blood Mania (1970)
Strange...
This film is best described as an early fore-runner for the glut of erotic thrillers choking the video store shelves today. In this one, a woman kills her father in order to get his inheritance to help a blackmailed doctor, but much to everyone's surprise, the inheritance goes to her sister instead! Nope, not making this up, folks. Worth a look to see the attractive DeAragon in the flesh, however, as well as the comical blackmailer who apes Clint Eastwood to the nth degree.
Love Me Deadly (1972)
Better than you might expect
Just having a film with the subject of necrophilia would turn most viewers off, yet this film does a fairly "tasteful", if the term can be used in this context, job with the subject matter. The films major liability is a story which swings between chilling horror and sappy 70's romance. But, the film is well-directed and for those who decide to sit all the way through to the surprise ending, probably won't be terribly disappointed.
Lisa, Lisa (1977)
bargain-basement film-making strikes out
Just looking at the video box, which features a young woman with an axe raised in the air, you can probably guess what the film is going to consist of. Although the film isn't really ever boring and moves along at an average pace, the utter cheapness of the production pretty much sinks the whole affair. In contrast to that, one could say the sparseness of the production contributes to the overall detachment, the girl being alone at the farmhouse with the 3 killers. One of those "either you like it or either you hate it" low-budgeters.
Lo strangolatore di Vienna (1971)
Not a bad film!
With Buono's comedic performance as a butcher who decides to take back over his butcher shop after 3 years in the asylum, and the film's overall tongue-in-cheek approach to the story, this film is an entertaining, dark-humored thriller. The film's bloodless approach to the subject matter is also a welcome change as well to numerous others of its ilk. Also, watch for the well-directed climax!!
Beyond Dream's Door (1989)
Very very dull film
The box promises a lot more than this film delivers, as a large majority of the film is dull, repetitive, hopelessly cheap dream sequences accomplished with a fog machine and colored lights. The acting is poor, and it looks like a handful of college students decided to throw together this schlocky film on a boring weekend. The overall premise is intriguing, but the film fails to deliver on its promises.
