Wo hu cang long (2000)
Great Film, and one of the best martial arts films ever!
Question: What do you get when you mix a quality, prestige, art-house Asian film done in Shanghai with the spectacular action and kung-fu associated with Hong Kong cinema? You get "The Ben Hurr of Martial Arts Films"...Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. This is easily the best film of 2000, and stands alongside "Enter The Dragon" as one of the greatest martial arts film ever made.
Highlander: Endgame (2000)
Don't be deceived Highlander fans, this film isn't that good
Highlander:Endgame opens with some promise and a sense that the filmmakers are going to apologize for horrible continuity in the series (ie. Highlander 2 and 3). Appearances by Rachel and Heather tie the first film to the 4th, but besides their appearances and Connor's, this film has closer ties to the TV series.
The film has absolutely no story and the characters aren't given anything exciting to do. Joe Dawson and Methos are wasted with frivolous cameos and serve only for exposition (in Methos' case) and to drive Duncan around (in Joe's case).
The fight scenes and swordwork are inferior to the television series and the only moment that even looks remotely exciting is Duncan's hand to hand combat fight in Connor's loft.
Highlander loyalists, don't be fooled or deceived. This film just isn't good at all. Stick with the first film and the TV series and live with the fact that the original movie and the series exist on their own terms in their own continuity.
I feel sorry for Adrian Paul. He was wasted in such a bad film.
Shanghai Noon (2000)
The Sleeper Hit of the Summer
Word of mouth will carry this film. In a summer of testosterone driven action films, this lighthearted action comedy is a refreshing change of pace. Jackie and Owen are great together and Jackie's martial arts, as usual, is fantastic. This film is what Wild Wild West could have been.
Fallen Arches (1997)
Hilarious
I loved the bit where he's auditioning and he reads John Travolta's Quarter Pounder with Cheese line "A Royale with Cheese." Funny as hell. A great short film about Ronald McDonald's career after McDonalds decided to use NBA players for their ads.
Lost Highway (1997)
A Great Short Film
I recently read that this film made Entertainment Weekly's 25 scariest films of all time...and I would agree....partially. If you kept only the Bill Pullman/Robert Blake portions of the film, this could have been a fantastic short film. Instead, you have a middle section that bogs down and has no relation to the Pullman story, which is by far the most interesting parts of the film. Check it out only for those parts...plus the great scene with Blake/Pullman and the cellphone!!
