This is SO bad, and yet mysteriously enjoyable on some level.

This is SO bad, and yet mysteriously enjoyable on some level. When I am not guffawing at the plot "twists," I am mesmerized by the miscasting. The age spread for college youth is abysmal. Joe looks old enough to be faculty.

Highlights for me include: 1. The musical sequences. 2. The ship on the door of the frat house. 3. Every time Steve pulls out "the book." 4. The dogma. 5. The bird track.

Get some crackers and your favorite processed cheese spread and give this sick puppy another viewing. Invite some friends over. It could be a great theme party. If you have a camcorder you and your guests could shoot a sequel. Don't forget the bird track.

Beautiful presentation that should not be missed.
12 June 2006
It should be sought out. I just happened upon it on NYC's Channel 13 tonight as part of a June Gay Pride celebration. Everything the previous comments have said is true.

I would like to see any ballot initiative against gay marriage (aka gays are second class citizens in the US) make this documentary required viewing before votes are cast. While if that in itself seems like tyranny and mind-control, then it at least guarantees that citizens have seen both sides before they are free to cast their votes. Of course, that assumes they are free to cast their votes with enough voting machines to accommodate their precinct and those votes will be counted fairly.

Unfortunately, the US no longer represents the great beacon of Democracy. It is corrupted up the ass and that is the great irony of this beautiful presentation of this Texas based, gay men's chorus. They are not second-class citizens. Not for their sexual orientation or their art even as some groups and political parties would have it otherwise. I think many of their spokesmen are closeted and promoting this proposed Constitional Amendment as cover. (Bless their gay-bashing and secretly gay horny hearts.)

This documentary will touch you. See it.

Save yourself and run the vacuum instead.
27 May 2006
I haven't used that suggestion since Spielberg's 4-hour indulgence to nowhere: "A.I." This equally indulging crap-fest only lasts half that time, but I was not connected to IMDb and thus did not heed the warnings. I was merely channel surfing and stopped long enough on the Hallmark Channel presentation of "This Piece of Crap" AKA "The Curse of King Tut." Zzzzzzzzzzzz

This CRAP does not even offer any guilty pleasures. It's just stupid with tired and lame production values. If I could put it out of my misery, I would fire the first shot and blow my own brains out rather than watch this drivel.

Change the channel. Change the channel. Do not watch this drivel. It will offend your sensibilities. It's that bad. (And I don't mean Showgirls bad. There is no redemption here. It's just Gawd awful and STUPID.)

And even though it runs shorter than "A.I."; it's still worse. And that is bad.

"Worse than A.I." So, abandon all hope

25 years later, I finally get to see it.
19 April 2005
What struck me most was how little has changed, here and there. Twenty-five years ago I was living in Birmingham, AL. I was aware of the program only because of the ads against it and some mild coverage in the local press about the decision of the local PBS station's decision not to air the program. Apparently, there was enough Saudi money within our local community that put enough pressure on our own PBS station to pull the plug.

Anyway, the concepts and ideas in this presentation still stand the test of time. If anything, they foreshadow what has taken place all these years later. All faiths and religions are corrupted by fundamentalist interpretations. The MSM is even more vulnerable to corruption than that PBS affiliate was all those years ago.

One thing that has changed is that I am now a proud citizen of New York City and I finally got to see it on Frontline. I have to wonder if Birmingham was finally lucky as well.

Unscripted (2005)
Phoney Baloney

I had the same problem with K Street. This is NOT a reality show. And I don't believe that all I see from the professed genre is real either, but the difference is that the "real" realities seem to edit what they shot into a story. This series already has a story in mind before they ever shot anything. It's way too obvious.

That's not too say that it's not a good story. Unfortunately, the story would have been better served if it were told without masquerading as a reality series. Maybe that's the joke that I'm missing, but everything is so clearly staged that I refuse to suspend my disbelief.

Great story. Bad telling.

I hate this movie
30 June 2002
and resent it for the 2+ hours of my life that I spent viewing it, all the while hoping that the outcome would eventually justify the maudlin and manipulative tactics used by the creators to make this short story more `meaningful.' Perhaps my expectations were inflated because of the Kubrick/Spielberg pedigree. Yes, the special effects were awesome at times, but ultimately I think you'll find running the vacuum more rewarding for your time.

Flawless (1999)

I can quibble, but I still highly recommend Flawless.

I just saw it for the first time tonight and I liked it. Thoughtful writing + commited performances = entertaining character studies. It certainly kept my attention all the way. Plus, I laughed out loud more than once (in a good way). Hard to believe this is from the director of Batman & Robin, but to Mr. Schumacher's credit, he doesn't take any writing credit for that one. (Laughed/groaned out loud in a bad way.) There's probably more to that issue than I'm interested in exploring, but to me real people are more interesting than cartoons. And while drag queens and macho heroes are quite cartoonish in their own right, the writer/director and cast did a great job fleshing out this very entertaining story. Hey, I can quibble, but I still highly recommend Flawless. Loved it.
