Ice Age: Collision Course (2016)
What Did I Just Watch??
A squirrel like creature finds an acorn and in so doing uncovers a UFO which it then takes into space. In space it encounters the planets lined up like pool balls and knocks them into place? But the creature left earth so Earth is already in place?? Are you as confused as I am yet? Then back on Earth we have wedding preparations going on until an asteroid is hurtled to Earth by the UFO flying squirrel thing. Okay. I can go with that. But then we have a group of animals who aren't aging and some of whom are over 300 years old? Then they turn old again but at 300+ wouldn't the oldest of them just turn to dust? Then we go back and forth to the UFO where the gravity is turned up and things happen I don't want to spoil but then we head back to Earth but then Neil Degrasse Tyson turns up to talk to us briefly...and on and on the weirdness goes. I will say that my 4-year-old nephew enjoyed it which is what the movie is meant to do but it felt like I was watching two completely different movies. This movie would be fine as a rental or even to own if you want something to occupy kids but don't look for more from this.
2 A.M. (2006)
great script
I caught this movie at SXSW in Austin, Texas and really enjoyed it. The basic plot is that the movie follows a group of friends at a bar as the bar is closing. What really makes this movie are two things and first is the dialogue. The friends all speak to each other as friends do, poking fun, getting angry and forgiven in seconds, complaining, etc. What is said rings true, the dialogue is not stilted or artificial it feels as if we're really listening in on a group of guys talking. The other thing that makes this movie is the way in which we get to know these characters. As one person leaves we follow him out of the bar, find out more of his story, and then time rewinds and we're taken back to the bar to follow another. This really helped to provide an enjoyable way of getting to know our cast of characters while moving the story along. When this movie comes to a film festival or theater near you go out and see it.
Stone Reader (2002)
I love this movie
This movie is basically an audio-book in DVD format. Basically with this movie the writer/director has written a non-fiction novel, added pictures, added narration, and allowed us to view his work.
The movie is about the search for a man who wrote one novel which affected the director so much that he felt the need to find out more about the author. A reviewer was uncertain of the director's motive for wanting to do this movie. His motivation, as I saw it, was simple curiosity along with wanting to find a way to not have the book end. In that way the movie is much like a good book in that it takes its time developing but it also kept me wanting more and more and I hated when this movie ended.
American Pie 2 (2001)
Better than the first
What's better than American Pie? American Pie 2...yes, a sequel that's funnier than the original. While there was an extensive use of the same jokes as in the first movie, they seemed funnier this time. The first movie caused me to feel more embarrassed for the characters than anything else. This time though the situations were more cohesive and the story seemed a lot smoother. American Pie 2 was much more a movie than a series of vignettes like the first movie. However, two pieces of advice...this is not a date movie and watch American Pie first.
