eXistenZ (1999)
eXistenZalist
eXistenZ is the best movie I've seen this year, with Go coming in a close second on my list. I enjoyed Jennifer Jason Leigh and Jude Law in their respective roles as Allegra Geller and Ted Pikul. I was surprised by Don McKellar's performance as Yevgeny Nourish. He was very funny and I'm sure his accent was deliberately bad. I'm disappointed with the movie's trailer because it's somewhat misleading. Willem Dafoe and Ian Holm have less screen time than Don McKellar and another great actor, Callum Keith Rennie.
I enjoyed the twists and turns in the plot. Without giving much away, I'd say the movie is excellent at confusing viewers about reality. You might walk out of the movie theatre pondering your existence...
Double Happiness (1994)
Realistic movie, terrific cast
Double Happiness is a very realistic look at Asian family values and personal values. Sandra Oh as the cheeky Jade Li was excellent. The actor that played her first date Andrew was great too. I was amused at the outcome of this pairing.I was very impressed by Callum Rennie, who played Jade's caucasian boyfriend Mark. There's a quite funny scene between these two that involves a talk about bad clam chowder and "fascist" bouncers. The chemistry/tension between Jade and Mark was great. The rest of the family was great too. Truly a must see movie about relationships.
Masterminds (1997)
Better than I thought, a few surprises
This movie was really poorly marketed. It's actually more intelligent than it's given credit for. This is just a fun action movie with seriousness and hi-jinx. Don't totally
check your brain at the door. There's some interesting things to watch for in the movie, especially if you've seen another movie that was filmed in Vancouver...
Hard Core Logo (1996)
I Own This Fine Piece Of Canadiana!
I have seen this movie over three times. I bought the movie because I love it so much. All the little Vancouver references are cute. I couldn't believe my eyes when Joey Shithead Keithley of D.O.A. appeared on screen! The stars of the show are Hugh Dillon and Callum Keith Rennie respectively. I can see why this film now gets American distribution...because it quite simply kicks ass! The ending was ruined for Canadian fans, so just go out and see this thing for yourself. You'll either love it or hate it!
Last Night (1998)
I laughed until I cried
Last Night is the best film I have seen in my lifetime. I was actually going to see the film "New Rose Hotel", but the theatre it was playing at was packed. I was somewhat ****ed off. The next day, I went to see "Last Night". I was pleasantly suprised by this film. I was blown away by the characters in the movie, because they seemed so real. Don McKellar portrays Patrick Wheeler in this film. Patrick is a loner who visits his family for one last time before the end. His mother prepares a Christmas dinner even though it isn't Christmas. The film cuts between Patrick's plans and other people's plans, including Craig Zwiller's. Craig is one of Patrick's old friends. Craig wants to have sex with a lot of people in a lot of ways before he dies. Craig is portrayed excellently by Callum Keith Rennie. Sandra (Sandra Oh) is another person preparing for the end. She wants to commit mutual suicide with her husband, but there's one problem: she can't find him. There are other interesting people in this film. It's a must see! Forget Armageddon.
Blade (1998)
Best Action Sequences In a Horror Movie
Blade is one of the best movies of its genre. It is a very precisely done movie with laughs put in for good measure. The action sequences were awesome. This movie was the only one that really hit a good chord with me.
