They're here. Who Cares?
The premise for this show was intriguing but somehow never grabbed my ongoing interest. Admittedly, I only watched the pilot and the following episode, but by the end of that episode (Blood of the Children) I wasn't interested in learning any more. I can't think why there was no chemistry here. Several top notch actors (Peter Dinklage, Carla Guigino, Brent Spiner and Charles Dutton are all major players),and a lot of high power talent formerly associated with Star Trek (Andre Bormanis and Brannon Braga for starters) are associated with this. The premise is good - aliens try to take over by re-writing our DNA - but they go about it in such a silly way. If I was going to take over the planet, I'd be running my little light show over Times Squares on New Year's Eve, not to a 13 crew member ship in the middle of the ocean. It was just ... boring.
Troy (2004)
Homer on Zoloft
Troy never manages to create any kind of passion about its issues or characters. It's all very blasé. Oh, yeah, Helen's pretty, and Hector loves his brother too much, so we'll provoke war with Sparta, ho-hum. Agamemnon wants to rule the entire known world, but Troy's always been a pain, so we'll use the Helen issue as an excuse. Oh yeah, I'm a sworn virgin priestess of Apollo (Briseis), but you're a total hunk (Achilles) and you saved me from a-fate-worse-than-death, so I guess I'll sleep with you.
It's as if this film was produced by FoxNews (Fair and Balanced). We want you to make your own decisions so we're not going to make anybody evil enough to be the bad guy or good enough to be the hero. And when you're failed to make an audience care about the fate of Hector, one of the great heros of the world, you've really screwed something up somewhere.
The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen (2003)
More fun than you expected
Given the critics' reviews, I expected this to - well, frankly, to stink. I was pleasantly surprised by the general sense of fun and the well done characterizations. The group I saw this with's biggest complaint? The camera was too close to the fights in the fight scenes.
The Matrix Reloaded (2003)
Who WROTE this thing, anyway!?
Great flick as long as no one's explaining the next bit of the movie to us! Didn't anybody on this film ever go to basic creative writing class? SHOW us the story and stop telling it. Also features the world's LONGEST gratuitous sex scene.
X-Men (2000)
What fun
If you've read the comics, you'll be happy with this adaptation (and you'll be the part of the audience that gets the yellow spandex joke!) My friends that I saw this with, who were NOT familiar with the XMen beyond the promos, also enjoyed this very much.
(Wolverine's original costume in the comics was made primarily of... yellow spandex).
Titan A.E. (2000)
Good fun for your whole family
What a pleasure to take my whole family (ages 4 - 11) to see a movie that all of us enjoyed! The blend of cgi and hand drawn is well done and breathtaking in a few spots, and the plot is fast moving (if a bit predictable). Bluth and Goldman are to be complemented on making a true family entertainment film.
Battlefield Earth (2000)
Who came up with that laugh?
I'm afraid the major amusement value of this film is that occasionally the acting is so awful that it's hilarious. This film should go straight to MST3K. I am embarrassed for Travolta, who is capable of much finer stuff (see Mad City for example).
