Will & Grace (1998)
Once Good Show Going Downhill
What is still good about this show: Debra Messing. She is both funny and beautiful. I have been following her career since she had a bit part in "A Walk in the Clouds", and I hope that after Will & Grace she can become an even bigger star. Also, Sean Hayes. He is unique, cute and interesting, but the show doesn't seem to know what to do with him lately. He is capable of more than the one-note character he's been the past seasons.
What is bad about this show: The Karen Walker character was funny for the first 2 seasons, but now all she does is spout tasteless, unfunny sex jokes. I'm no prude, but the character is so crude. I didn't agree with the fans who didn't like the Leo character. I thought he brought a fresh face and outlook to this closed little society. I think that is what they need -- another "outsider" who is funny, sane, and interesting.
They also need to give Sean Hayes a chance for more depth. And clean up/shut up Karen Walker.
American Beauty (1999)
Never Predictable
This movie was always interesting and never took a predictable turn. The character of Ricky Fitts was so good, yet unusual, and Wes Bentley stole the show. It was worth the price of admission to see this young man who is sure to be a big star someday.
The Tom Green Show (1999)
Weirdly Compelling
The Tom Green Show is sometimes weird and sometimes gross (even sometimes not all that funny), but is always compellingly watchable. Tom Green is going to be a big star someday; I think he will be a great comic actor.....he definitely has charisma!
Stepmom (1998)
Only One Reason for Seeing
This was a pretty predictable movie, and way, way too long. The only reason for going to see it is Liam Aiken, who played the little boy. What a find! He is a good actor (not just for his age), and totally charming and seemingly unspoiled. I will be watching his career with interest.
Brother's Keeper (1998)
Perfect Chemistry - A Keeper
The chemistry between these two brothers is perfect. Porter is serious; Bobby is wild and fun-loving. Most of us have been in a relationship like that - from one side or the other. The casting on this was very good: William Ragsdale is great as the anal-retentive brother, and Sean O'Bryan captures the lovable slob perfectly. The writing is a cut above ordinary sitcom also.
Spin City (1996)
Great Ensemble/Great Writing
This is the funniest show on TV this year. The writing is clever and genuinely funny. All of the members of the cast are interesting characters in themselves, and there is also tremendous chemistry among them. The chemistry between Stuart and Carter is especially good (possible spin-off?) I'd recommend that everyone look in on this show.
