Spook (1988)
So bad.. So very very bad
I haven't seen this recently, so my comments are based on recollection. All I can remember from this movie when I watched it about 15 years ago, that it was immeasurably bad, I was only about 15 when I watched it.
If I saw this movie again now, I would actually be prepared for the poor quality, and may actually be able to laugh at it... "So bad it's good" shall we say. I used to get B-Rated horror films out for the enjoyment of poor quality, though I wouldn't want to disgrace even B-Rated horror flicks by putting this into the same category.
I also noticed that someone has rated this at a 10.. This has completely proved the accuracy (or lack of) for any internet voting device. I wonder if this person put the same thought into their electoral vote? Anyway, Back to the movie... Bad Bad Bad, so Bad... Watch it!
Troy (2004)
Should have been called "Brad"
Just watched this for the first time only because nothing else was on the TV. I was pretty much laughing at how rubbish it was throughout the whole movie. All I saw were variations of "shots of pretty Brad Pitt" through the whole thing.
I will say the acting wasn't bad, and didn't think there were any bad performances, including Brad Pitt. However the directing was just atrocious. Wolfgang whats-his-face really took away from the greatness of the Iliad, and made it a trashy, modern, sole-less, money-spinner.
If you like actioned packed movies with little to think about, this one is for you. Otherwise go and watch "City of God" or "Amelie" or "Shawshank".
Buffalo Soldiers (2001)
Pretty good flick, worth a look
I am a huge fan of Gregor Jordan's installment "Two Hands", and was interested in how this movie would pan out, especially given it's countless delays in getting to the big screen. In short, I really enjoyed it. Phoenix does a great job, subtle and well delivered. Paquin too gives a good performance. Ed Harris, out of character, is hilarious!
The storyline is great. To poorly simplify it, bad soldier getting grief from clean-cut Colonel: but the excellent directing, acting and shooting gives this movie much more dimension.
Given that 9 out of 10 movies showing in Ireland at the moment, and for the last year or two, are complete rubbish, I was glad to have seen this one at the cinema. Might even get the DVD, we'll see..
I was disappointed that a lot of Americans trashed this film (having read other users comments). Possibly due to the fact that it gave a less than flattering look at US Soldiers, who are out there trying to "restore order" and defending "democracy" against Saddam. CNN and George B are regularly glorifying the Army, so this highly negative look can put the righteous citizens on the defensive. I wonder how often CNN mentions that the US army have killed more of themselves then Saddams men have done!? ;)
As I digress, I give it a solid 8/10.
