Brilliant insight into the early Nusrat.
27 May 2000
A disillusioned Nusrat fan goes beyond the commercialised modern image of Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, and discovers his early music. A very well filmed low-budget movie by first time diretor Farjad Nabi left me begging for more. This is a fine example of the talent and quality of of film-makers and movies that are available in Pakistan if you look beyond the commercial mainstream of Lollywood.

I recommend this movie to anyone even vaguely interested in Nusrat and also if you just want to see good, quality work from Pakistan.

Sheer joy to watch
23 February 2000
Not only was this one of the most insightful biographical films I have ever seen, it was also a most poignant and revealing documentation of turn of the century social attitudes. This is truly a great film that I especially recommend to blues and rock and roll afficiandoes. Leadbelly in my opinion played a major part in the history of music and this movie plays a significant part towards documenting his story.

Not your run of the mill Bollywood flick.
28 December 1999
I am not exactly one of the millions of ardent Bollywood movie watchers, in fact i could quite possibly be categorized as an ardent hater of most Bolywood produced movies. Yet i found myself intrigued by this film in which Sanjay Dutt plays a most intriguing role. Sanjay Dutt is the anti-hero of this movie which rollicks through his early years and shows him to grow up a confused and very bitter human being. True to Bollywood style, it has it's fair share of "romance scenes" and the never ending songs, but the fairly original and interesting script, and some fairly decent acting by Dutt makes up for the rest of the movie's failings. I suggest you watch it at least once and judge it for yourself.

An intriguing and beautifully stylish movie
2 December 1999
I saw the reviews different people have given this movie, and there seems to be a rather diverse opinion of this movie going around. From people loving it, to absolutely hating it.

IHOP i believe this movie was a beautifully filmed tale, that uses the medium of film to its fullest extent. The movie takes an intriguing approach, very drastically different from mainstream hollywood movies, in that there is no buildup of traditional suspense, or tension so to speak. The majority of the movie leads up to the seduction and eventual defection of Hiroshi, without actually having a single frame of Hiroshi in first person perspective. A typical hollywood recipe would be to set up the plot (if they can manage it...if not, the heck with it!) and carry out the con frame by frame throughout the movie, tediously building up suspense along the way...(if there was lots of things blowing up everywhere, all the better). Here however, we are merely informed of Asia's progress as a background occurrence, or an aside. It almost seems as if her success or failure is irrelevant, since that is an entirely different story altogether. It is a background story, because Hiroshi himself is part of the background. The story focuses on Walken and Dafoe as they correspond back and forth.

A truly intriguing film, of a quality and style i have very rarely seen.

The gravity of friendship
3 March 1999
This was an excellent movie I just happened to come across as I was flipping channels on television. A short movie about a rather strange phenomenon that has taken place in which the gravitational force of the planet is suddenly subjected to varying degrees of change, and how it brings a handful of apartment dwellers and one postman closer together for a moment. The movie uses an absoloutely bizarre setting to display a rather touching and fundamental character trait of humans, that is, friendship. If you can find this movie, I suggest you get it, if only for the novelty of watching something so unique and different.
