Gone with the Wind (1939)
What can you say - sheer magic!
Besotted beauty walks all over men yet stumbles over true love.
The lovely and tragic Vivian Leigh is typecast in a mammoth film that has all the ingredients of life.
Life and death, riches, war and poverty roll through a scenario of a coming-of-love drama that is as timeless as it is perfect.
In such a short space, one could not hope to do justice to this movie. I think I'll go away and try again.............
Amsterdam Affair (1968)
Thrilling and tuneful.
Marvellous whodunnit set around the canals of Amsterdam.
The tired old plot of man-suspected-of-murder-finds-beautiful-girl-to-help- prove-his-innocence has rarely been done better. All this and a truly memorable theme tune hammers along to a gripping finale.
If anyone has a copy of the theme tune, please send me a wav. of same. I can still hear it in my memory over 30 years later!
The 300 Spartans (1962)
Uplifting battle movie.
War is a hellish thing and not to be wished on any people or person in real life. But some wars have been necessary and few more than the fight against the expansion of the Persian Empire into the Hellenics.
In this movie - wooden though some of the acting be - the bravery under fire is as real and uplifting as any war film from the 60's could be.
Stirring score lifts this offering out of the ordinary and it gets my vote for one of the best action films from the 1960's.
