Dear Evan Hansen (2021)
Such an amazingly awkward movie
Regardless of the mental health issues being presented in the film, the way the film was done was enough to make me want to leave the theater (I know nothing about and have no interest in the original broadway musical).
You have a situation where a character gets into an awkward misunderstanding and when he's unable to clear it up right away he just goes along with and hopes that's it. When the situation arises again, rather than just clearing it up then... he doubles down and doubles down again. At this point the audience /knows/ it's all go to come crashing down terribly in the end and it does (spoiler). The music while nice, really just made the whole awkward last about a half hour longer than it really needed to.
The only really good part about the movie is that they didn't go for the typical Hollywood Happy Ending (tm) and decided that since they'd gone for uncomfortably awkward as the style, they'd stick to it until the very end.
P/S: What person in the 21st century upon receiving an unsolicited USB stick in the mail, in an envelope with no return address, would actually stick it into their computer?
The Map of Tiny Perfect Things (2021)
Significantly better than expected
Movie got off to a slow start and I didn't feel any chemistry between the leads at the beginning but it developed into a poignant and very sweet story. The end was a little unhooked and didn't quite resolve things but it was still pretty enjoyable.
