Gangs of New York (2002)
Excellent
Thought this was an excellent film but perhaps the civil war storyline wasn't entirely required. Day Lewis is absolutely superb. Scenery is magnificent and the violence throughout is nicely tempered with the relationship and respect that builds between Amsterdam and the most violent movie character of many a year - The Butcher Bill Cummins ( Day Lewis )
9/10
Snap Decision (2001)
Worth watching
Enjoyable, thought provoking film and well acted through out. The film reflects how easy it is for some one to be judged guilty once the buzzwords "pornography" "child abuse" and "paedophile" are used.
In this film a serious of playful innocent photos, some taken by the children themselves are construed as pornography by the local film processing lab who pass them onto the police and Pandora's box is opened when a cop on a crusade wants to make an example of the loving widowed mother of the 3 supposed "victims".
Bounce (2000)
Quite good
I heard very little about this movie which made me think it was poor with the 2 big names ( Affleck and Paltrow ) in the cast.
I was pleasantly surprised and was impressed by the acting of both leads ( previously felt Affleck was one dimensional ) and thorougly enjoyed this movie. Not so taxing on the brain ( Good Sunday afternoon fare ) but good nonetheless.
Watch for the Jennifer Grey ( Dirty Dancing's Baby ) part as the disgruntled airline employee.
Dogma (1999)
Poor Movie
A disappointing film - Affleck and Damon seemed to be just talking all the time as if to one another but not as their charcters. Also the use of language - Would angels actually talk about sex all the time and say things like "get laid" and "f***" ? I don't think so.Affleck and Damon should have been given some lines rather than adlib. There were some decent bits but not enough to outway the mixed up almost non-existant plot. Affleck and Damon were appaling - Obviously done for money. Hayek was good but it's also Alan Rickman's worst performance. Don't waste your money on this overhyped rubbish whose only selling point is that is tries to be controversial with it's subject matter.
Gladiator (2000)
BraveHeart rip-off
Disappointing film - A remake of Braveheart essentially but without the passion or originality. Also stole bits from other films - Dream sequence was so BraveHeart/Titanic. Proves to me that hype is mighty. Certainly will not watch on Video. Russell Crowe was fine in the lead part and the costumes and fight scenes were excellent but story - Have seen it all before!
Field of Dreams (1989)
Exchellento !
Enjoyable albeit far-fetched baseball movie. I don't watch nor like baseball but baseball is merely incidental in this movie - It's really about a guy taking a chance and getting in touch with himself and his past. "If you build it he will come" and "Go the distance" - I like it.
Pi (1998)
Dull dour drivel
Very dark film with a storyline that is confusing and shallow. I was bored after 20 minutes but gave the film the benefit of the doubt and was bored throughout. Maths,Pi,patterns in numbers sounded interesting to someone who studied Maths in College (Me) but it was not. The only saving grace was the beautiful Samia Shoaib also seen in the Sixth Sense.
Braveheart (1995)
Excellent film
Superb film - Mel Gibson brilliant as William Wallace. Great storyline although not completely factual. Atmosphere throughout was spot on as were the action scenes. Favourite parts : Speech to the fighting men "I am William Wallace..." and scene were he speaks latin and French to the Queen.
The Island at the Top of the World (1974)
Great Fantasy Film
Very enjoyable film - Great for that afternoon in by the fire. OK so maybe the plot is a bit far-fetched (So was Jaws and Field of Dreams) but it's all good fun and it's one of the first films I remember seeing as a kid and I love watching it again. All the elements are here - Zeppelin, North Pole, Hidden Island, Hidden race of Vikings - Similar to those Doug McClure films - The land that time forgot.
Wag the Dog (1997)
Atrocious
The worst film I've seen since Highlander II. Flimsy plotline, ham acting from DeNiro and Hoffman. I almost fell asleep and should have walked out. A number of people (around 15 ) left in mid-film. That says it all - Levinson's worst ever film. And to think people will get this turkey out on Video seeing as it was hyped and advertised to make it seem watchable. I voted 1 out of 10 - If only a zero score had been available.
