The Innocent (1994)
An autistic boy holds the key to identifying two brutal killers.
This is not a bad movie as I've read in reviews. True, a lot of time is used up on Kelsey Grammer's "suffering" and the kid's level of autism -- and that is boring. But the really interesting parts of the movie happen between the two psycho-baddies. These guys aren't just bad or "hollywood crazy." They are mental. Tinsley (Jeff Kober) is totally dependent on his partner for direction ... even though he is petulant about being controlled. And his partner is uncompromisingly intent on having it all his way. One other interesting overtone ... I could be wrong, but I get a sense of an implied sexual relationship between them. Oooh, interesting power games. I like this movie because of these two. Unfortunately, not enough time is given over to their character development. Whatever, they did a great job with what they were given.
The First Power (1990)
Potentially great plot flubbed by weak writing.
Although I like this movie I will say that there are some bizarre contradictions with the use of symbols. For example: does anybody else see something wrong with a crucifix/knife? And that nun is just a tad overzealous about using it.
Anyway, what I like about the movie is how excellent Jeff Kober is as the killer, Patrick Channing. He brings a wonderful sense of evil glee and fun to what he is doing to poor L.D. Philips. What I don't like about this movie is the stupid psychic-chick gimmick. I know it is meant to move the plot along, but she just comes across as a flake and next potential victim. Not a good female role model.
Viper (1988)
A woman risks her life to get revenge against the anti-terrorist operation responsible for her husband's death.
A little far-fetched in story-line, but done okay. It isn't a bad movie. There are a few unexpected plot surprises, which is always nice. But not enough to raise this movie above average. I give it 5 stars.
Out of Bounds (1986)
An Iowa farm boy travels to L.A. to live with his brother, but a mix up at the airport leaves him holding a bag of heroin. Now he is being hunted by the drug smuggler, the police, and the feds.
I've read three reviews of this movie: two knock the plot, and one knocks the acting. Why? I've seen worse movies (with bigger budgets) that the critics loved. At least the "kid" isn't depicted as being more brilliant than the cops or drug dealer. Yeah, there are some plot gaffes ... like, all the kid has to do is show that his bag check ticket doesn't match the one on the bag to prove it isn't his. But, hey! This is all make believe, anyway. So why not believe this kid is so scared he doesn't know what to do? It really is an okay movie. Fine for an afternoon diversion. If you like this genre, I doubt you'll be disappointed.
The Advanced Guard (1998)
Four alien scouts capture four humans and run tests to determine if humans are suitable for slavery.
This is a very enjoyable TV movie. Yes, it is a low-budget film. But the writing is strong and the sets are done well. What is nice about the human characters in this movie is that they all act like real people. Each one has moments of anger and fear, but each also show strong, decent, heroic sides. There aren't any "weakling" or selfish jerk characters. The ending is no surprise, but getting there is what counts. And this nice little film delivers the goods.
