The Hangover (2009)
really original
I can't figure out if reviews and ratings of this movie are plain marketing or am I getting too old. Most original comedy of year and so on and so on my ass. Story is is simple as it gets: Four guys go to Vegas, get drunk and stoned which makes them really cool and one of them even marries a stripper. And that's about it. Yeah people. Far out. This MUST be #hundredandsomething movie of all times. Since I have seen few recommendations before watching it, I kept waiting for THE moment, it would really start being really good. Regrettably, it goes mostly down from the tiger on. Well, movie is not completely bad and can make make a fun evening out with your (preferably) male friends, preferably after a beer or two, in normal circumstances i would give it 6 or 7, but since a have to balance a little for all that nonsense, it gets five from me.
Being John Malkovich (1999)
overrated
Sorry. But I'm another among people who can't understand what's so great about this movie. I am a kind of sci-fi/fantasy fan, but if this movie is sci-fi, it's crap. Ideas are neither consistent nor explained or believable. Why does person have to enter 'vessel' before certain time? What happens if more people enter same 'vessel'? Etc. Add main characters' love affairs and you get an artsy version of contemporary soap opera. Nice to watch, relax, eat pop-corn while it's on, but nothing more. :] 6/10. And I'm very generous.
Crna machka, beli machor (1998)
finally a good comedy
First warning. This movies *does not* reveal "some deep mystery of life", like you might expect from Kusturica. It's pure (and beautifully filmed) comedy that delivers what most other comedies promise.
Second warning. This move does make "politically uncorrect" jokes, however it does not do it for the sake of attracting an audience that's proud of "understanding" and tolerating such jokes. Comparison with "There's Something About Mary" comes to my mind - with one huge difference: "Crna macka, beli macor" works! Anyway, this is not the major point of this movie.
Third warning. Most of humor in this movie is situation comedy type. If you liked Oliver Hardy swallowing nails you will laugh to a fat lady pulling them out of wood with her buttock and vice versa. Two friends I saw this movie with were not amused at all!
Besides the comedy part, it is a typical Kusturica movie. Geese running everywhere, special air-condition face cooling system type inventions etcetera. Everything you love. Plus one sparkling and one plain funny and sweet love story.
Boys Don't Cry (1999)
Touching real-life drama does not necessarily make a good movie!
On contrary! Movies based on real events often rely too heavily on real-life events and forget the cinematographic part. Boys don't cry has little to show besides the story, that is not oh-so great if you're not provoked by it's "provoking" topic. I think people overrate this movie in fear of being considered ignorant of it's committed topic. All in all: it's not (that) bad movie - acting is ok, but the movie as whole is choking. And it's overrated. I saw another far less pretentious "sexual identity" topic based movie the same week I saw this one and I liked the other one better. Hint: Fucking Amal!
