Free to Play (2014)
Incredibly well made documentary on the rise of e-sports and the struggle for recognition
This film gives you a great insight into the world of e-sports and its rise in popularity. What used to be considered as a basement dweller's hobby is on its way to become a recognized, legitimate sport. And in some countries, this already is the case.
More importantly, however, the film allows you to follow the lives of three professional gamers on their way to "the international", a Dota 2 tournament whose victors would receive the highest prize money for a gaming event at that time: one million dollars.
You get to experience the pressure they undergo in the face of the tournament, but also their struggle for recognition with their families. What their peers consider a waste of time could in fact end up make those kids millionaires and celebrities.
From the beginning to the end, the film grips you tight and does send you on a roller coaster of thrill, anticipation, excitement and also disappointment, sadness and reflection. You feel for and with the people in Free to Play, also thanks to a great job in editing and scoring.
Even if you are not familiar with Dota 2 or the e-sports scene in general, I would highly recommend watching this film as it opens both the world of e-sports and the private lives of those 3 gamers. And it's definitely worth a watch.
Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace (1999)
Finally I saw it myself, and I just love it!
At last the movie arrived Germany! I was so curious about this movie, because i heard so many bad critics and i just couldn't believe them. Now, finally, I had the chance of figure it out for myself, and.... I don't know what's wrong with all the people! I was lucky to see the midnight-premier of "The phantom menace" and I loved it from the beginning. I mean, hey: IT IS STAR WARS! And in my opinion, this movie has the same magic as its prequels ( or sequels). The lightsaber duels are unbelievable fast and very good choreographed, the pod-race was simply stunning as all the other special effects. Alright, but I have to admit, that the movie had some weak points which the first three movies didn't have. But they're no serious weaknesses. I mean, all the fuzz about Jar Jar Binks... He's not that bad, actually, I kinda liked him. Funny guy.
What I am trying to say: Forget all the critics or what other people tell you. Even if you like Star Wars just a little, then I'm sure you'll enjoy this one. Well, I have and I'm gonna see it for at least three more times.
Dei Mudder sei Gesicht (1997)
Absolutely stupid, but that makes it good!
Oh my God! This movie is SO awfull, that is totally brilliant! Filmed with a Handycam, a fistfull of bucks and a few amateur actors, this is a classical B-movie. And a really bad one. But I laughed till I cried! It's so cheap, so stupid ... so excellent! The first 40 minutes are really cool, but to the end it gets more and more stupid. Well, but you gotta mention that this movie was made by a few german students, no professional equipment or something like that. Not even money. Slowly, everybody here in Germany knows that movie! Surprising, that these few students have such a big success with their work! Well, if you like selfmade movies, then you'll love this one!
