Nice squib action!
9 June 1999
Nice squib action...and a bit of character development while we're at it, too. This one provided a lot more action than I expected, and even features a magnificent car chase sequence. Director DeCoteau did a great job, and also honed his skills with the similar Lady Avenger. Plus, I urge you to check out Prey of the Jaguar. So if you're looking for action, go for American Rampage. Cool, explosive cover art, too.

A robot remake of Dawn of the Dead.
9 June 1999
This is one of Wynorski's finest pictures. Right from the goofy opening, this movie is very exciting and doesn't ever get boring. Obviously, the people who made this had a very fun time and that shows in the finished product. Sort of a killer robot version of the classic, Dawn of the Dead. The background music is very hokey, too, but memorable and perfect for this genre. It's time some humor came along at this period of time for the horror genre. Lots of memorable dialogue, plenty of action, and I'm sure you'll have a fun time watching this. I know I did.

The best movie I've never seen...
9 June 1999
This is easily the greatest film that I will never, ever see...unless of course Mr. Ray releases it one of these days. In fact, the question I have is: Is The Brain Leeches a better film than my own Attack of the Bathroom Creature? I probably wouldn't bet on it, but they seem to have several things in common. 1. both have great titles, yet, horrible plots and terrible acting; 2. the first was directed by Fred Olen Ray, who has gone on to become of the greatest film directors of all-time, and the latter was directed by Eric Spudic, who has since not sold a single script and still dreams of directing his first film for a studio. Oh well, that's all I have to say...

Shock Cinema Vol. 3 (1991 Video)
The best of the Shock Cinema series.
19 April 1999
This has some funny bloopers, especially the outtakes from Doctor Alien. It even shows the original Robot Ninja trailer, which is about 4 minutes long! Goofy stuff, and there's some funny outtakes from Nightmare Sisters. I've seen this one about 3 or 4 times and even a few of my friends liked it. Hey, sometimes the bloopers can be funnier than the films themselves, but I haven't seen either Dr. Alien or Nightmare Sisters. So I'm not sure, but the behind-the-scenes material is sure enjoyable. I highly recommend this for fans of b-cinema, scream queens, and gore film lovers.

Jackie Chan at the peak of his career.
19 April 1999
I believe Rumble in the Bronx to be Chen Gangsheng's finest, er...Jackie Chan's most exciting movie. I've seen about 25 or 30 of them now, but this one's still the best. It has a lot of humor, and uh, should I even mention stuntwork? He gets more dangerous and goofy each time around. This time he's taking on like 100 of the bad guys. Then he's teaming up with some of the bad guys, but either way, he's always on Chan's side, if you know what I mean. I love that soundtrack, too, especially the song in the end credits. So, how about a sequel?

The Dentist 2 (1998)
Why a sequel?
16 April 1999
Why do a part two, I ask? Money, that's all it is...and perhaps for the cast and crew from the first to explore the same 'ole territory to see what'll happen this time around. Corben Bernsen's back, without Ken Foree (what a shame), and he's up to his killing ways again. Reminds me of Stepfather 2 a bit, hmmm. Now this time, the dialogue is a little interesting and the plot does seem to progress for a while. Like usual, it slows down and Clint Howard jumps in for a cameo. Well, the ending was fair, I guess, and Jillian McWhirter did indeed give a good performance. Good enough to also star in Yuzna's Progeny. He's stated an interest in doing The Dentist 3, but please don't, Brian. I'd rather see a Re-Animator 3, which should be in pre-production at the time of this writing. So, if you're looking for a decent horror flick, watch the director's Return of the Living Dead 3 or his produced-only Ticks - both fine films.

PM Entertainment does it again.
16 April 1999
This is one of PM's finest, although they did not produce this (they only distributed, I believe). First of all, PM Entertainment is the company with about 50 huge car crashes in each of their films. Ah, now you know what company I'm talking about. Well, the action is toned down here and the suspense multiplied. What also helps is the four main characters: robber, guy, his evil wife, and the sheriff. All of these roles are very well developed and all seem like real people. Now if you were put in the same situation as this guy, you'd do the same thing, too. I rooted for him all along.

Firestorm (1998)
Hokey, but still fun.
16 April 1999
The preview for this film is actually more exciting to watch. It's really hokey; in the mold of Die Hard, I guess you could say. But aren't they all? The dialogue is kinda interesting, yet, very expectable. The best part - the cool action sequences. Basically just a low-budget movie with a big-budget, right?

A "chiller".
16 April 1999
This movie is goofy as hell! I think it was written as a serious film, but then when it came time to film, Michael Cooney said "Hey, let's throw in some humor and spice it up!" The characters are actually slightly developed, too. Oh, and the death sequences are the best. One thing I hate, though, was the hairdryer-weapons. What was that all about?

We needed more blood for these heroes.
16 April 1999
This isn't too bad of a film actually. Sure, the plot's original, with a touch of Mad Max, which in turn was inspired by Death Race 2000. Hauer gives a great performance, as usual, but it's that Full Metal Jacket guy who plays the best part. And Richard Norton has a cameo! He even gets to do a little fighting, as expected from him. This needed more blood, though.

One of the best B-movie interview videos on the market.
15 April 1999
This is totally awesome. I mean, I've always dreamed of a tape featuring interviews with the players of the B-movie industry. Dave DeCoteau, Fred Olen Ray, Jeff Burr, C. Courtney Joyner, and so on. These are the masters. Oh, and, of course, good 'ole Charlie Band is on it, too. Too bad they couldn't get Roger Corman and Jim Wynorski and the set would be complete. This has better interviews than volume 2, but I love all 4 of 'em. So if you wanna get into the industry, watch this first.

A visually-fantastic masterpiece of perfection.
15 April 1999
What is one of the greatest films of all-time? Army of Darkness. No doubt about it...it blows away the previous two Evil Dead films. The dialogue is very, very memorable...especially lines such as "Give me some sugar, baby" and "My name is Ash...and I am a slave". KNB proves themselves with some terrifically unmatched F/X sequences. Campbell is in fine form, showing that Ash is the ruler of the universe. He obviously knows how to save the day, no matter the circumstances. All of the performances are top-notch and, better yet, the script is in good shape. I've read it. With nearly 600 cuts, it's non-stop excitement, and never boring. This is definitely a film that can be watched countless times and will never become boring. A true classic, indeed.

One of the 5 greatest movies concerning the Vietnam War.
15 April 1999
Why waste your time with filth like Platoon, Full Metal Jacket, or The Siege of Firebase Gloria? Well, I have to admit, too, that those are all great films, but they don't live up to the excitement of Beyond the Call of Duty. Take all of the action of any Hollywood film and times that by two. That's how much action is here. Jan-Michael Vincent even guns down a chopper with an M-60. And that boat takes a beating! Explosions ripping left and right, Vietnamese soldiers flying in the air, squibs all over. You thought John Woo's films had a lot of squibs, think again. This has double that amount. I also love the ending when they must pass under a bridge. Cirio Santiago has created yet another classic. I not only recommend this one, but also check out his Field of Fire. It's even better!

There will never be a better film made.
15 April 1999
Oh my God! I'm still excited about Dawn of the Dead being the best movie of all-time! Just the title alone makes me jump up and down like a little kid excited about opening presents. It's been about 4 years since I first viewed this classic. And ever since, I've seen it about 30 times. I'm glad it finally got a chance to play on HBO and Cinemax, due to a ton of fan mail, but they cut out about 15 minutes of footage. There is not a single bad thing about this. Every little aspect about it is excellent. I can recite the dialogue, hum the theme song all the time, and always pretend I'm in a mall battling zombies. It's inspired several video games, incl. Zombies Ate My Neighbors and Resident Evil 1 & 2, had its own board game, newsletter, and it even broke into the top 15 films of 1978! Wow! The 20th anniversary DVD will be out soon, so I'll be viewing that, although I've already seen four different versions of the film. Oh, and the sequel, Day of the Dead, is almost as good, but not quite. Dawn of the Dead is also unique for combining so many genres into one = horror-action-comedy -romance-martial-arts. A true classic which opened the floodgates for over a hundred imitations. I highly recommend this film, along with the other 2 million fans world-wide!!!

Titanic (1997)

Definition of an "excellent film": Titanic
14 April 1999
How could this get a 7.4 out of 10? I think it deserves a 9. I would give it a 10, but it's still not as good as Dawn of the Dead. Now everybody runs off to the theater to catch a good movie. Surprisingly, the majority of movies at the box-office are above-average. They better be if I'm forkin' out a couple bucks and an hour or two of my time. Three hours in this case. It doesn't seem like that long, though, because it rarely ever gets boring. And about the bad dialogue...this is bad dialogue? You should check out my Attack of the Bathroom Creature if you think Titanic has terrible lines in it. They're memorable, and that's what counts. James Cameron obviously knows how to make a movie, let alone hitting a home run every time his name appears on the silver screen. Aliens and The Terminator are fine masterpieces, so I expected the same here. This exceeded my expectations, however, and I'll be waiting for his next. So just remember, Leo, if it wasn't for Jimmy, this movie would have only made half the money...trust me. Either way, the first and last 15 minutes are going down in cinema history. Wait, has anybody NOT seen this movie? Does this even need a review?

An interesting little film creating a niche of its own.
14 April 1999
How many bad reviews have I read of this movie? Way too many... I decided to see it anyway since I'm one of Alicia's biggest fans. By the way, if you listen carefully to all of the dialogue in this film, you will probably notice that this is her most personal film to date. I won't go into all the details, but there are a few reasons I know of why she rewrote a large chunk of the dialogue. First, the plot is original, as far as I know of. The first fifteen minutes immediately kicks into overdrive with everything happening at once. The soundtrack, too...love it. She picked that out herself, too, and made great choices. Benicio steals the show once again, but Alicia and Christopher aren't far behind with their performances. Oh, and Mr. Walken is a little spooky in this movie (as expected?), but don't think of him like that in real life. Emily T. Hope is by far Ms. Silverstone's most magnificent creation to date, topping Cher Horowitz and Darien Forrester. Emily is nothing like Alicia, and that's a huge sign she's the greatest actress on the market today. I suggest you watch this film just to learn a little bit here and there, despite the slowdown in plot during the middle and Brambilla's lackluster action sequences. Well, except for the only car chase in the film...a classic. So, how 'bout a part two?

Superman is a wimp. Jaguar is the new hero in town.
14 April 1999
Move over Superman and Batman, take a vacation. Maxwell Caulfield seemed to be in a slump after the lame No Escape, No Return, so he made a good decision. Dave DeCoteau does his finest with an action film filled with crazy camera angles, good dialogue, and uh, did I mention action? Plenty of it, too. I especially love those exploding-arrows. God this movie's so good I'm gonna stop writing this review to go watch it again.

Demolition High (1996 Video)

I wish I had gone to this school!
14 April 1999
Remember Toy Soldiers? Well, add Jim Wynorski and a low-budget and you get the picture. With more action, too. I'd call this Corey Haim's comeback performance. He's been in so many cheesy movies, we had all wondered. Demolition High is a fine action film in the mold of Die Hard...in school. School sucked, but this one seems better. And you got a whole slew of cameos. Some of the death scenes are inventive, too = 1. terrorist flying into band saw 2. lady terrorist getting stabbed by a ton of pencils shot from a fire extinguisher. My only complaint: there's like a total of 20 kids at this entire school. What, was Wynorski short of extras? Jim, throw me in part three, please!

True Crime (1995 Video)

Not seeing this film would be a true crime.
14 April 1999
This is the best made-for-TV movie of all-time! Am I saying this because I'm a huge Silverstone fan? Partially, but even without her, I'd still see it. I'm a fan of serial killer genre films, and believe this to be a great entry in that category. Also, Mary Giordano easily ranks among Alicia's top five character creations. Totally memorable - like she really exists. I'd have her on my side, too, if there was a mystery to be solved. She plays the character, like she does with her real life, with complete confidence in everything she does. Seems sweet, honest, nice...just like she is in real life. So is that acting? Yes, indeed, she's sort of a rebel once again. This time she's not bad, she's too good and a bit afraid to do things that seem above the law. But she doesn't do things the normal teenager would do. Instead, she spends her time reading detective mags and solves crimes. A cliche abounds: she's sort of avenging her father's death, in a different way than vigilante-style. At the time, Alicia seemed to be playing the same characters: rebellious, seductive, without a parent, a loner. This happens here, too, but she's a bit nerdy this time around. That doesn't matter; she's still cool as a nerd. Check this out soon, or else Giordano will be investigating why you haven't...

Billy Madison (1995)
Goofy, goofy, goofy, goofy...
14 April 1999
This is easily one of the most enjoyable movies ever made. Adam Sandler is definitely the highlight. He wrote the role for him, and only him. I mean, I've watched this movie a dozen times and it's still as funny as the first time. Something for the whole family to enjoy, and almost every scene has a hilarious gag in it. Crap, I think I hear that Atari game callin' my name...

Jim Wynorski's best PG-rated comedy ever, pals.
14 April 1999
I don't care how cheesy this is, or how bad the special-effects are. This rules. I'm 19 years old and I love it. I mean, PG movies like this are few and far between. And even though Trenton Knight acts the same in all of his movies, he puts a little bit of spirit into it. Oh, and Jim Wynorski. Now he usually does the "babes, boobs, and belly laughs" formula, but this time that's left out. Don't worry, Munchie's goofy dialogue will make up for that. The baseball and Death Race 2000 sequences are best, but the ending is only fair. If you skip this goodie, you don't know what you're missing...

Battle Gear (1991)

This is better than Terminator 2 and Hard Target combined!
14 April 1999
Gosh! How come nobody in my town has seen this masterpiece? Probably 'cause it's too hard to find. Either way, I have taped it off of HBO and love every minute of it. It was actually the second or third movie I had in my collection of over 2,000 videos. And it's still the best action movie I've ever seen, or at least that I can think of. Everybody's always complaining about action movies not having enough action. That's not true with this one...95% action and 5% talking. It still has a plot, too. Here it goes: Major Ironhand goes down during a firefight and he parachutes down with his buddy. So this airforce guy battles some Viet Cong soldiers until a special-forces team of six guys arrives. They battle about 200 of the enemies to rescue him, but then they gotta get him out. Another 200 army dudes are out there, even though Santiago uses the same extras over and over. No problem, though; the squibs are abundant, the music is riveting, the dialogue ain't too shabby, and the action, of course, is non-stop. The ending is tremendous, having more shootouts than Hollywood can offer. My only complaint: David Carradine is limited to a small role, but besides, he saves the day! Jimmy T. is my favorite character, too. Dramatic stuff there. Cirio Santiago, you rule! Thanks, man, for making the greatest action movie of all-time. Platoon sucks compared to this.

A memorable action film...
14 April 1999
I must say this movie definitely left an impression back about 5 years ago. I taped it off Cinemax and saw it about 3 times because it had an awesome plot concerning this deranged 'Nam vet dude. After he kills a person, he chops off their finger; second victim - 2 fingers, third victim - 3 fingers. And so on. Well, one of his comrades is going to stop him and the action is well choreographed. Has a surprise ending, too. If you're in for a neat little action flick, whether these events could happen or not, I suggest ya check this sucker out.

Creepozoids (1987)
It won't creep you out, but it'll certainly entertain.
14 April 1999
Well, here's my story. I had been searching for this video for three years when I came across a copy for $9 in Best Buy. I rushed home excitedly, only to be slightly disappointed. I thought it'd be more of a classic with a title like that. However, it entertained and that's the important part. Very predictable, but aren't they all. Linnea adds spirit to the picture, as she always does with her goofiness and charming voice. The other people just kind of spit out there dialogue (sometimes terrible), and just look around for monsters. Also check for the time when the nerdy guy types stuff on the computer. See the famous names displayed. The best part about this flick is that "creepy" baby zombie! He steals the show afterall, though he's only at the very end...and still alive. If Charlie(Band) kicked in some more money, the producers could have used more than, like, 4 sets - some re-used for Sorority Babes in the Slimeball Bowl-a-Rama. Oh well, I'd love to see a sequel or a remake - Monstrozoids(?). Please, Dave? At least it had a fair plot and I liked it enough to watch it three times. Yeah, that box-art kicks butt, too.
