Ever After (1998)
Better than the original Cinderella.
A treat to watch. A thoroughly charming movie , which intends to set the record straight and tell what the real story of Cinderella was. Without any magic or a fairy godmother the story is obviously much more believable but surprisingly it is also much more engrossing and entertaining as well. The characters are very real and beautifully played. Drew Barrymore makes a perfect Cinderella and the stepsisters have infinitely more substantive roles than in the original story. Overall a super entertainment for all ages. A must-see.
Titanic (1997)
Great movie but I've seen better.
Epic adventure film. The story of the Titanic tragedy might have been told in a better way ( A Night to Remember ) but it has never been and never will be told in a bigger way. A huge amount of money was spent and unlike some other films ( Waterworld ) it showed. Leonardo and Kathy Bates are excellent while the others give pretty good performances. The climax is probably the best in Hollywood history and the sets are also fantastic. Having said that , the movie is certainly not the best of all times and I doubt that it deserved the 11 Oscars. Kate certainly didn't deserve to be nominated. The movie swept away the whole world and probably the academy members also got a little carried away. It definitely is worth watching at least twice.
The Trigger Effect (1996)
Good depiction of how technology has replaced humanity in the US.
Overall a very good movie. It shows that on the one hand, technology has become so important that when the power goes off in a place, nothing can be done. The gas stations are out, the streets are dark, you cannot even gat a medicine for your child unless you steal it. On the other hand, human values have become so pathetic that one doesn't trust anyone. People love electricity but fear each other so much that on the slightest suspicion are ready to shoot each other. The film is a slap in the face for the modern world and wakes one up to the cost of technological progress.
Welcome to Sarajevo (1997)
More like a documentary of how people suffered in Bosnia in the war.
A better film could have been made to portray the tragedy of Bosnia. Some parts are very effective and the film does well to give some idea of the suffering of the people specially the children, but overall it looks less like a film and more like a documentary. Woody Harrelson is very good but the rest of the cast has performed well without being extra ordinary. Should be watched in order to get a rough idea of what the war did to the children of Bosnia. If one expects a great and gripping movie, Welcome...... will be a disappointment.
