The Relic (1997)
pretty creepy
If you like well-bread horror films with big budgets, then you'll love The Relic. Though it's no where as scary as the novel, the film packs a punch with dark atmosphere and some sustained suspense. The creature is kind of silly looking in full light, but the movie is well executed throughout.
Birthday Time (2000)
Adorable and sweet
Birthday Time is a sweet and charming short about one's quest for a first kiss before the 18th birthday mark. Ferber's script is tight and funny while the performances are solid. If you can, try to catch this quickie delight on the Sundance Channel! It will put a smile on your face.
The Trouble with Harry (1955)
In my opinion, Hitchcock's weakest
The Trouble with Harry is easily the Master's worst film in the sense it fails on almost every level. Obviously a black comedy but the humor is somewhat scattered and oddly humorless. The characters are all cardboard cut-out's (the local painter is more useful with a shovel than a paint brush), making for the whole affair to crawl even slower than it seems to. Hard to believe Hitch made this in between To Catch a Thief and The Wrong Man!
The Shining (1997)
What the hell?
Kubrick's The Shining is one of my all time favorite movies, so when I heard there was going to be a mini series about the King novel I was excited. Then I saw it. Man, Mick Garris and gang really know how to botch a masterpiece into absolute nothing. First, but showing all the action takes away all the suspense and horror, and the cast, especially Weber, are definitely out of their league. Well, Rebecca is good, but the kid is pretty annoying and his vision of Tony is a dork with glasses and greasy hair! A true dud if there ever was one. I can't believe I let myself watch all six hours! Those "bush animals" where cool, but they did nothing.
A Knight's Tale (2001)
Um, it had good music
Aside from some good music from Queen, A Knight's Tale is pretty stale stuff. The acting is amateurish, the direction is off and the plot boring. I'm not sure if this will be a hit or not (it could be), but most people will flock to see the better Mummy Returns. A safe skip for anyone.
The Mummy Returns (2001)
You won't be disappointed
I recently saw a sneak peek of Mummy Returns here and it is really good, better than the first and I love The Mummy. The special effects are ten times better and the action thrilling. You won't be disappointed! Rachel Weisz and Brendan Fraser make the best on-screen couple. The only thing I might have taken out is the kid.
...E tu vivrai nel terrore! L'aldilà (1981)
Wow!
This is one of my all time favourite horror shows and easily Lucio Fulci's best work. It really takes your breath away with its stunning imagery and creepy atmosphere. Avoid the heavily cut version, though! All the gore is missing!
Zombi 2 (1979)
Gore and gruel and cheese and splat!
I love Zombie! It has to be one of the best zombie films of all time. Of course it can't match Romero's flicks, but Zombie is really a film all horror buffs should see. Try to see it in widescreen and uncut.
Antropophagus (1980)
Grim Reaper rippingly good
The first time I saw this film, under the title Anthropophagus, I thought it was just another basic gore-athon Italian flick. My second viewing I found it rather atmospheric and tense. Obviously shot on the cheap, this does feature moments of surreal beauty. The ending is pretty suspenseful. Plus, Tisa Farrow rocks!
Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2 (2000)
Boo, indeed
The Blair Witch Project was a groundbreaking film experience. Its sequel, Book of Shadows (?) is a phenomenally bad film experience. It is ugly, badly acted, moves at a rate only jack rabbits would like, and is about as scary as watching paint dry.
The American Scream (1988)
Jaw-droppingly bad
This is easily one of the very worst movies made. It is confusing, unintentionally funny, not funny when it wants to be, and strangely sleazy. Makes absolutely no sense whatsoever! Troll 2 is a masterpiece compared to this trash!
The Dead Hate the Living! (2000)
The living hate this movie
This has to be the worst movie I have seen in a long, long, long time. It's the kind of film the guys at Mystery Science Theater 3000 would make fun of. Bad acting, jokes, gore effects, everything. The movie is from Full Moon Entertainment. The "studio" that made such masterpieces as "Puppet Master 4" and "Retro Puppet Master."
