SubUrbia (1996)
A must not see
I have often said that the only thing that I look for in a movie is that after I am done watching it I don't think to myself that it was two hours of my life I wasted. In the case of SubUrbia I felt as if I had lost years of my life. The title seems to say it is a picture of life in the suburbs of America, it is not, I should know for I live there. The dialogue is a sad imitation of Clerks, Mallrats, and Singles, the characters are poorly drawn one sided and not at all likeable. Going through this movie I had the deep feeling that the writer has never lived in the suburbs and is trying to mold the generation X with high school kids and adding a pot head, and a biker. The bottom line is avoid this one.
The Mummy (1999)
The new Version of a classic, is a Winner
The Mummy was all at once corny, sappy, superstitious, action filled, comedic, and most of all Fun. The visual affects had me taken aback from the very start; the shots of ancient Egypt were great they actually made it come to life without being garish or overdone. The story was not too complex to follow nor was it One Dimensional, the characters were likeable and the acting was excellent. One thing needs to be said, and that is Brendan Fraser stole the show. I was at first tentative about him in an action role but I am thoroughly convinced, he delivered his lines so well that you forgot he was just playing a part. This movie is a glorious action/adventure/comedy/love story, which I hope will not be lost in the Star Wars Onslaught.
Mean Guns (1997)
Nothing too deep, but not a waste of time.
Mean Guns is a slick stylish old western where everyone has to kill everyone else for the glory of money. While this plot will not win any awards I feel that a movie is entertainment first and foremost, and the movie is entertaining. The plot turns into a real version of video games such as Duke Nukem, Quake, and Goldeneye, it is not deep and there are very few plot twists that I did not feel were there just to fill time. However before you think that all I will do is bash this film let me say that I loved it, the plot was thinner than paper but the characters were worth it all. In the day of engrossing plots based around one dimensional characters it is good to see the turn around, a one dimensional plot with multi leveled characters. It was a fun romp that is worth your hour and a half of time to enjoy a laugh at some of the corny lines and even the small simple things that make it fun.
Ishtar (1987)
Hardly the Worst
I picked up this video for I have heard of its reputation for years, always one to make up my own mind I rented sat down and watched. This movie was corny, it was hard to believe the characters annoyed you, and the music was awful; and you will laugh the whole way through it. Any person who did not see this movie as an off beat slapstick comedy is disturbed. Really a blind camel? This movie had me rolling on the floor laughing; the scenes were outrageous and played with a straight face that one is reminded of what Police Squad and Leslie Nielsen. I cannot understand why this movie was so panned, by critics, it is a joy to watch and worth your time just to forget about your cares, I only wish more movies chose to entertain rather than enlighten.
Hudson Hawk (1991)
Catch the Fun
Willis once again reprises his role as the reluctant hero that gets beat up throughout the course of the movie. This seems to be his favorite role for it is used countless other times in movies such as Die Hard, and Fifth Element to name a few. Hudson Hawk is unbelievable, corny, predictable, and sometimes just plain wild, but I found myself enjoying every moment. I found myself enjoying the campiness and the corny action and hero lines. If you go to see a movie to be enriched socially, and intellectually, then avoid this movie, but if you what to enjoy two hours of comedy, action, and just plain fun then this would be a wise choice.
