The Bat (1926)
Great Genre-Mix which forecastes BATMAN
1 March 2000
THE BAT forecastes BATMAN in more than one detail. The sets look a lot like Gothan City. And even the Batsignal is here - but this Batman is one bad dude.

I said genre-mix in the one line summary, because it's mainly an old dark house movie, but also contains elements of fantasy (the title giving supervillain can fly etc.) and comedy (which is partly outdated and silly). The sad thing about the film are it's racistic undertones toward japanese people. But everything else is great, especially the FX, the set and the cinematography.

If you like old dark house-films (incl. hidden chambers and secret doorways), this one for you.

You can't do a movie like that anymore
18 October 1999
One of the strong points of silent movies is that they are naive in the positive meaning of the word: they are creative.

If anyone does a story like that today, one has to choose to do a drama, a thriller or a black comedy. Browning did not have to choose... he just made a very strange film.

Another plus is the use of running time. No fillers. Just 60 minutes of strange ideas. The film is not perfect; and not anyone will enjoy it. But it features a great performance by Lon Chaney and nice photography (incl. creative use of backprojection). And if you like FREAKS, you have to see this one... the background of Browning as a circus assistant really shows up (though I hope, it wasn't that bad).

Sorry, no story details. I don't want to ruin your fun.

Arrrgh ... trash as trash can...

I will never understand why anyone would like to do a remake of MAN EATER, but this direct to video does fine in recreating the non-stop gore-approach of the original.

It's from a gorehound for gorehounds (only).

From a technical point of view the movie is okay. Storywise it is stupid as hell. But who cares if you got all that lovely killings? Me. - That's why I only vote a 5/10.

Excellent Low-Budget Horrormovie despite some weak FX
9 May 1999
Hennenlotter did it again! Known as a collector of early drug scare-movies the contains some fine drug scenes in 60ties exploitation style. So if you like films like THE TRIP this is one for you. But be warned: The film contains a lot of gore. The optical FX are not really top-notch, but the story-telling is. Elmer, the parasite, is the star of the movie and one of the most original monster characters in years. You will love to hear him sing!
